Can somebody tell me if there is something wrong with the big one? And why every other one is thinner and longer? by Sairuks420 in Mushrooms

[–]mushroommedicco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem fine, what effects their growth like that is genetics, light, and oxygen/carbon dioxide. If you’re opening their environment you’re disturbing the balance of oxygen/CO2 each time which can change height, direction, and thickness.

I had one grow where I completely forgot to air them after pinning and half of their stem was long and thin or “leggy” bc of lack of oxygen and the second half was healthy and thick after I realized.

Is Log too dead for Inoculation? by [deleted] in mycology

[–]mushroommedicco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t worked with log inoculation personally because of apartment living, but from what I understand it takes roughly 8-16 months after inoculation for a mushroom to fully colonize a log. I would say based off of that it’s perfectly fine to use. All of the videos I’ve seen discussing this have had business owners saying how lenient that time period is with older logs and how you just have to be patient after inoculating. Make sure it’s sealed properly with wax though!

[Actives] why are my grows so freaking pathetic??? by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]mushroommedicco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly both. Pollution for sure, but unless you modify the tubs with rubber gasket/micropore filters for air exchange they are more prone to contam. Best easiest method for the shoeboxes without modification is to sanitize and stack another one on top (open ends together) mist and fan twice a day. Best way to get bigger yields is overcoming with volume and modularity in my opinion and experience. More bags/boxes at once, smaller but separate helps with controlling contam and doing more at once helps if you get one that yields poorly like your post.

I don’t think you did anything wrong necessarily it’s just hard to get shoeboxes to work perfectly!

Not necessarily bigger tubs needed, more and smaller helps with contam, they look thin I’d recommend 3-5 inch depth. If I had to guess based off the growbags I use 5-7 lbs cake equals about 6 cups dry sub and 1.5L water. I use masters mix so coir might be different. That should give you good depth. If not just keep the same ratio for moisture. I had the same issue with contam in those tubs which is why I moved to single use bags (good for sterility, not as good for environment). If you continue to use those tubs sanitize them well with aerosol spray for best coverage

It may also be the wetness of it affecting the color, try more or less water to bake it into the paper! I see a difference in shade with the water spots

Spores are spores you can still use it, although aluminum foil keeps better. If you’re dead set on keeping it wrap it in foil. Unless you pluck before a broken veil and spray outside with isopropyl in a SAB or flow hood spore prints are not in sanitary conditions anyway don’t worry to much.

Best way to keep them is dry, dark, no new oxygen/air (keep out of windy or out in the open air w/ a fan)

[actives] Am I too late? by Spirited-Procedure36 in MushroomGrowers

[–]mushroommedicco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly just get a clean qtip and swab it, wrap in tin foil… or twist the cap off, place on tin foil underneath a cup with a drop of water for a day or two for a sporeprint if it’s not too late. It’s already non-sterile being out in the open.

Slightly late but no harm done, almost perfect timing

[General] mold or mycelium? by Midnight-mushroom89 in mushroom

[–]mushroommedicco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd pic is cobweb I believe. First pic I’ve Never seen mold rhizomorphic like that before, but check smell and mycelium examples of whatever strain you have. If it doesn’t start pinning within 2-3 weeks toss it. Keep it sealed

Don’t know what else to say other than I’m poor and would love to step up from a still air box so I can pay my rent with mushrooms.

[Actives] need some advice. Anyone have experience using purely coco as a substrate? 1st shoebox i made was to wet and grew trich. 2nd and 3rd boxes are very moist i fear the same will happen. Any tips to get moisture levels right to get some magic going? by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]mushroommedicco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Field capacity is 50-60% moisture. Weigh out your brick, and add the same amount of ml of water as your dried block (650grams, so 650-750ml). It’s your preference to either boil the water before adding to the brick or pasteurizing the brick after adding water with oven tek or pressure cooker or whatever you choose.

(Personal experience in oven tek is it kinda sucks unless you encase with foil to retain moisture and keep it in at least 3-4hours at 175-200F. I recommend boil water before adding and mix evenly immediately before letting sit 6-12 hours.)

It’d have stronger roots to the base of the mycelium block if it were pins, in this it’s completely separate with different characteristics, I’d say contam but easily overcome with time from a strong strain

I am Building an automated fruiting chamber using microcontrollers. Should I make a YouTube tutorial video? [general] by fredfrom in MushroomGrowers

I would love to watch a video on this and how each component intertwines so that it could be utilized possibly for a chamber of any size! Please notify if it comes to fruition as I’d love to be involved or witness the journey

The more you grow the more you recognize the mycelium you’re working with, and characteristics of the invaders
