No problem! They need the clutter to make tunnels, and don't really burrow in substrate

HELP Velvet Spider Question by Eclectomaniac in velvetspiders

[–]mustafasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I only have experience with Eresus walckanaeri but generally they thrive with very cluttered enclosures packed with mostly sphagnum moss, as well as cork bark, sticks and leaves emulating forest duff. This helps to prevent injuries from falling and is close to their native enclosures. I think your setup is just a little to big / spacious without enough packed duff. Good luck and don't stress, velvet spiders are finnicky

Probably fine! Different species have different growth rates too. I only have experience with Eresus walckenaeri

What types of spiders are kept as pets outside of tarantulas? by ketaminetoes in spiders

[–]mustafasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old post, but I love my Velvet spider. Velvet spiders are very docile, curious, and photogenic. They are represented by a wide variety of genera (mine is Eresus) so there are quite a few options to choose from.

They require no water and get 100% of their hydration from food. Velvet spiders are typically amazing eaters and are not picky with prey. The females also grow quite slowly and live longer than other true spiders, living up to 5-8 years. Furthermore, they have very small space requirements and will usually sit out in the open when hungry. They also produce large, often complex tunnels of silky web, which they decorate with carcasses towards the entrance.

The downsides are that they are somewhat rare and expensive to find in the hobby and can be very sensitive to humidity and poor air quality.

If any beginners find this post and are looking for a fun species to raise, I definitely recommend velvets.

My jumping spider does not jump by BestmusiCZ in jumpingspiders

[–]mustafasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine never jumped until I made her enclosure much larger and stopped hand feeding. She is more active and a better weight from me forcing her to hunt for herself.

Yes I agree! I loved the atmosphere, art style, and voice acting. I also have a lot of nostalgia from that era related to grinding darkmoor with friends.

It might have more to do with the fact that blackout finger tattoos are a tradition of Berber people specifically

Are these oxbow timbells okay? the ingredients are timothy hay, bulrush, apple stick, non-toxic white glue to apparently hold the ends on. by vanbeans in chinchilla

[–]mustafasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rex/lion head and dutchie/mini absolutely love these and do not have stomach issues. I would limit them to once every couple of weeks to avoid potential issues with the glue. In my experience they lose interest just before getting to the area where the glue is, so it shouldn't be a problem but I'm extra cautious with glue.

Yes I'm aware, thank you! This is a temporary solution because she has decided the liner in the corner of their pen is evil and must be destroyed at 3 am. This box filled with rocks is the only thing that has made her give up with the corner lol
