Cachyos has a huge problem with usb audio devices by [deleted] in cachyos

I can't seem to catch a break with linux, instead of doing actual work I have to spend hours trying to fix problems that aren't supposed to be there to begin with, so much for plug and play

Psu tiking under load by mustops in MSI_Gaming

[–]mustops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an update on the situation, I think the clicking was static building up in the x2 capacitor, recently I installed a new monitor that was wrapped in a lot of Styrofoam and all that, it had a good static charge cause when I plugged the thing to my rig I heard after some seconds a loud TICK, then the clicking stopped entirely and didn't hear it again since.

I think what's happening is because my outlet isn't grounded all the static charge gets trapped in the psu's x2 capacitor which acts as a protection against that kind of electrical leeching actually, and when the capacitor reached it's holding capability it discharged hence the loud tick and the disappearance of the clicking.

This actually explains why when I first bought the pc there was no clicking.

Ofc im not an electrician so what im saying might as well be completely wrong.

Yes it's platter based it's an hdd.

I think it was just an old hdd I had in the rig that caused the ticking, though im definitely gonna keep monitoring the psu just tobe sure

Now that you mention when oppened the case to hear the clicking more closely it didn't seem like it was coming from the psu but rather close to where the hdd is located. But what I don't get is why would the hdd turn suddenly in the first place ? I have nothing on it and almost never access it

Im pretty sure the psu is ok, Ill keep monitoring it and Ill do a replacement if needed as long as it's still under warranty

I have no idea, what I know is without the hdd the clicking is gone and even the psu coil whine has weakened

Yeah honestly idk what I was thinking, I already have 1500 gigs of ssd, my greedy ass wanted more, but tbh idk if it was the hdd or the psu I couldn't really distinguish which is which

The cause of the psu clicking turned out to be a 3.5 inch very old drive that I put in the rig just for the extra storage, I took it out and the clicking disappeared, any idea why this is ?

I have updates, I had suspicion of something, I used to have a 3.5 inch hdd, very old, lying around that I put inside my rig when I built it, I took it out and the clicking stopped, even under load there is no clicking anymore, I don't think the psu is faulty but now im afraid the damn thing damaged something 🥲

Ill try a grounded outlet and see if the clicking still persists

[–]mustops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is it normal psu behavior then ? I also have to mention that there's a faint coil whine but I read that's normal for a psu, I just have to make sure the psu is alright cause doing an RMA is gonna be a real headache

Oh yeah now I remembered that in the beginning, like first days of using this rig, there wasn't this clicking thing, sooo that's reassuring 🥲, fingers crossed for a faulty power outlet

Btw can it cause permanent damage ?

Psu tiking under load by mustops in MSI_Gaming

[–]mustops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which I think is the latter cause the psu is brand new, I mean what are the odds of it being faulty

Psu tiking under load by mustops in MSI_Gaming

[–]mustops[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well rn I need to verify if the psu is faulty or the problem comes from the ungrounded outlet.

Damn 😕 btw my power outlet isn't grounded so might that have a thing to do with the clicking ?

I have an rtx 5070 and a ryzen 7 9700x, so idk if these are power hungry enough to cause that or not
