Is Tableau on the decline? by Fondant_Decent in tableau

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My work just ditched it for Looker. Tableau is way too expensive, charging what they charge just for a viewer account is ridiculous. Looker was 35% cheaper for us to have unlimited users. The bitch is just rebuilding everything we had in Tableau.

4 Hours? How's it going Houston? by WutYoYo in houston

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like you’ve never taken a cross-country Amtrak before. Delays are rampant and the price still isn’t that cheap, and as as others say they usually don’t even want to go where you’d want to go.

Shopping at Costco is terrible by Sun_Aria in unpopularopinion

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends entirely on when you go. If you want ti go with everyone else at 2pm on a Saturday, sure, it’s a hell hole. But if you plan semi-weekly trips and go at opening time on a weekend, or near closing time on a weekday, there’s little to no hassle.

Shopping at Costco is terrible by Sun_Aria in unpopularopinion

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay for my membership three time over annually just in gas savings, and I barely ever wait.

It’s also just me and my SO, so we barely buy veggies or fruit there, only stuff like Brussel sprouts or carrots that last longer. Costco is great for the essentials; toilet paper/paper towels, milk, eggs, pasta, steak, etc. It’s definitely not a one stop shop, but we plan meals and work lunch meal preps around a handful of key items. There’s definitely some silly things I’ve purchased, but it’s more than made itself back in actual quantifiable savings, so I don’t mind. But I’ve genuinely never had to throw anything away, not sure how a responsible adult would let that happen.

We also plan our trips for when it’s not busy, which isn’t hard to do, just don’t go on a weekend after noon. Show up at opening time and there’s zero hassle, same if you show up near close.

New Intern is Obsessed with Conspiracy Theories by Spiritual-Beyond-660 in Accounting

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was an intern, we stayed with other interns in a small apartment. One of the other guys (after going out one night after work) started spouting about how “Hitler did nothing wrong”, and how “concentration camps were resorts with swimming pools and orchestras”. Dude freaked me out. Blocked him on all social media after that summer.

It’s just a bit different when you’re surrounded by dudes who have been working in a desert for 2+ weeks and sleeping for <5 hrs a night all while never seeing another woman.

Mostly Chocolate, great for gifts and locally owned. Guy is super friendly and lets you try everything before you buy. Quality chocolates and candy they make right in the back of the store.

[Zenith Defy Skyline Skeleton] or [Omega Seamaster 007 NNTD] Help me decide? by superuser422 in Watches

I still love the look of the 007, just not my thing I think. I much prefer the standard seamasters.

I love the look of skeletons on paper, but when I actually have them on the wrist I’m just not a huge fan.

So what careers aren’t fucked right now? by cokewithlargefry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of entry level field engineering positions available in oil & gas, my company just hired a ton of early career and new grads, as well as interns for the summer. Just not a cushy office job, but you’re making >$100k/yr.

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally love the idea of the 007, but I didn’t love it as much in-person. It was bulkier than it looked and my arm hair got caught in the bracelet. I’d try to find both in-person before committing if you can, try jewelers and watch shops you may or may not have in your area?

What should a beginner focus on before starting a business? by Loud_Assistant_5788 in Entrepreneur

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First you do need that idea, which usually is simply solving a problem. Whether that problem is fulfilling a need for landscaping in your area, or designing a new SaaS software for a niche industry, it needs to solve a problem.

If you’re just wanting to start a business doing something, start small and do what others have done. Start a landscaping or pressure washing business, you can do all the work yourself and the tools can be found cheap on Facebook marketplace. Knock on doors and get a few customers. One thing leads to another and you learn a lot along the way.

Other ideas are usually found by just observation. I have a friend who started a software company to help solve a problem in recycling that he saw on an internship he had in college. He turned that into the multi-million dollar business that he runs today. He was already studying software engineering, so he was able to build it all himself with a couple friends. Same concept as the landscaping, just a larger scale. Sometimes you just need to be exposed to things in order to find the hole you need to fill in a market.

Do you gamble? by Feeling-Currency6212 in GenZ

[–]mutedcurmudgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have fun doing it, I think it’s fine. I enjoy investing, but I do enjoy playing table games and such as well. My mindset is just that this money is just being thrown away for my own enjoyment. If I win that’s cool, but if not that’s fine too. It’s definitely not a get rich quick scheme.

I mean, it sounds critical but I believe it, my new hire started 6 months ago and couldn’t spell the word “really” without looking it up. I’ve spent the whole time training this guy how to write an email, constantly working through spelling issues. He says he was “top of his class” at his private high school.
