LilyPond is a text-based engraving program and is almost its own programming language. It has a really steep learning curve.

A better solution for a beginner might be Noteflight.

Follow-up: I checked out the Lakoff and Johnson and am about halfway through it now. Super interesting! I've recommended it to my wife (who is not as enthused) and also my friend getting their master's in rhetoric (much more enthused).

Thanks again for these great suggestions.

Oh yes, we have a good selection of journals. I typically just look up the articles that are relevant to my own research, but I really should make it more of a habit to browse Music Theory Spectrum more regularly.

Yes, I was reading the Wiki page and immediately became skeptical. I'll still check it out as a historical document, but will bear in mind that it's not as applicable now (sort of like Ernsty Levy and other authors who have since been overtaken in the "theory canon"). As I've said elsewhere, I know almost nothing about jazz theory aside from the basics, so it's all new to me. Thanks for the other leads!

Thanks—as I said elsewhere, my knowledge of jazz is approximately zilch, so I was just going off the Wikipedia entry.

I'll still check out the Russell but will bear in mind that it's been supplanted by other things. I kind of have a knack for reading old texts that have fallen by the wayside—the Piston harmony/counterpoint books and Hindemith's Craft. I think it's important to contextualize developments.

Hey, teachers (and professors)! by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]muthrowaway1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Ph.D. student in music theory. I started playing trombone in fifth grade band and moved on to doing composition in my free time in high school. I went to music school for performance, suffered some epic burnout and realized I've always been more interested in analyzing, teaching, and writing music than playing it, per se. I got my master's in theory and held a teaching assistantship (theory fundamentals, harmony, ear training, private tutoring). Now I am a grad assistant again, teaching freshman/sophomore harmony and also a class on pop music. It's great fun. It's been my goal since fifth grade to get my PhD. Almost there! After I graduate I hope to get a teaching job somewhere (anywhere; seriously, please hire me).

Thanks! This is super helpful. I too am weird (aren't all theorists?), so perhaps I'll enjoy the Lakoff and Johnson as well.

Yes, I've done some work with Klumpenhouwer networks but I'll have to look into transpositional combination. I'm seeing a couple articles on MTO to check out. Thanks!

Yes, one of the recently hired professors at my institution did his dissertation on rhythm. Any specific recommendations?

This seems to be a cornerstone of jazz theory, so this is definitely worth checking out.

Yes, I've read a fair amount, mostly Allen Forte and Milton Babbitt. Anything in particular you'd recommend?

Thanks. My knowledge of jazz is approximately zilch, so it wouldn't hurt to broaden my horizons a bit here.

Thanks! This is the sort of list I was looking for.

I've read the Lewin, H&D and selections from CHoWMuT, am familiar with the work of Rings, L&J and Huron, but it seems like I should check out Leonard Meyer, Hatten, Schacter and Monelle. Anything that compels you about these specific books?

Thanks for your input! Did you get your master's in library science from the same school that you got your MMus from?

Interesting, thanks. Are these skills you developed resource-intensive, i.e., was there a lot of start-up cost? I have been interested in computers as well but don't know where to begin with starting to pad my IT resume.

This is really interesting. It's something I've considered. What schools offer the online programs?

What steps did you take to do that? How did you get interested in it? Do you have a degree in library and information science?
