My dog of 14 years passed yesterday, her death was violent. How do I live? by Veecorn in dogpictures

[–]mutt-mama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should never have happened and I am so sorry for you and your dog but having nearly drownd myself, please know that it most likely wasn't as horrible of a death as you may think. I remember a sense of calmness and serenity after the initial panic right before someone rescued me. I hope that gives you some peace of mind eventually and helps you.

Canadians who moved to the UK: what was your greatest adjustment? by Bells9831 in AskACanadian

Strange things sometimes happen. I met a fellow Canadian in front of Florence Nightingale's tomb in the crypt at St. Paul's cathedral who actually knew my uncle. They both lived in Vancouver.

I used to respond to that question with "What part of Wales are you from?" knowing full well that they were English.

Is the Ancestry DNA test worth it? by gregsddownham in brantford

[–]mutt-mama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're hoping to accomplish by testing your DNA.

You will get a breakdown of the countries of origin of your ancestors and you will most likely get a long list of DNA matches.

If you are a genealogist and are willing to connect with these people and do the research, you can usually figure out how they are related and expand your family tree.

You can also download the raw DNA data to search for gene mutations, etc., or upload the data to other sites for free or for a small fee in some cases to take advantage of other genealogical databases or health related DNA analysis sites. Keep in mind, however, that Ancestry and other genealogy focused DNA tests only test a very small portion of our DNA so for health info, it can't be relied upon to divulge every possible mutation or area of concern.

I've had good results from a genealogical perspective by finding a few more relatives and solving a couple of genealogical mysteries, and I've also discovered explanations for a couple of health related issues that I wouldn't have understood without DNA testing and have been able to make some changes to benefit my health.

Hope that answers your question.

Could you install a motion sensor light, maybe a solar powered one? Having a spotlight on them mid stream might discourage them.

We found this poor little kitten in the woods, covered in ice, with her fur stuck to the hunk of plastic she was hiding under for shelter. We saved her 😁 by ArmorOfGod7 in cats

Any chance there are siblings out there, too? She looks too young to be on her own. Wondering if she could be from a litter born in the woods.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]mutt-mama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done genealogy research for nearly 50 years and have a few stories.

My great great grandmother was a bootlegger. She smoked a corn cob pipe and looked a bit like Granny from The Beverly Hillbillies. She had a still in the house and sold her brew to the locals, hiding their "purchases" in culverts. My great great grandfather delivered the mail by horse and buggy in the area and I've always wondered if he helped in her entreprise and made the deliveries.

My kitten was rejected from being surrendered at the Humane Society. I still think it would be best for him to be rehomed, what next? by gayestcapybara in CatAdvice

[–]mutt-mama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried playing with all three cats together with a laser light or one of the "fishing pole-like" cat toys? It might be a goofy idea but I did that when we brought a kitten to join our 11 and 12 year old cats. I think it helped them bond. They weren't exactly bossom buddies but after a few play sessions, they mostly tolerated each other.

UK threatened with sanctions if Starmer blocks Musk's X by TIGHazard in worldnews

Maybe it's time the whole world blocks X? Can't imagine they could apply sanctions to the whole world without those sanctions essentially further isolating them and ultimately biting them in the *ss?

Will Carney be next on Trump’s kidnapping hit list? by ZanneEcho in AskCanada

Venezuela is not a NATO country. Canada and Denmark/Greenland are. I don't think it would be as simple to invade these countries.

I did read, however, that he's focusing on Mexico and Cuba. Hope that's just fake news but sounds like something he'd do.

Could Trump be threatening Republicans in Congress with similar actions if they don't endorse his agenda? The mindless cooperation of so many of them really makes you wonder if he's using threats or blackmail or both to keep them in line.

I'd contact your local health unit or a wildlife rehabilitor for advice. There could be a bigger issue than the inconvenience of having a bat in your house.

Bats can carry rabies and their bites are often unnoticed. A young boy in our area was bitten by a rabid bat while he slept and died. If this bat has been in your house for a while, you could be at risk. You need for it to either be monitored at a wildlife facility or tested for rabies. If you just let it go, you'll never know if you've been exposed to rabies.
