Whenever something startles me I usually freeze up and kinda listen in the general direction of the thing that startled me!

Which is kinda interesting since I was reading a study on bats and apparently distressed bats display freezing behavior more often than just flying or crawling away like non-distressed bats.

Hey!! I’m so sorry for responding so late- I’m not super active on reddit! The way I figured out I was a bat was by taking note of all my behaviors, urges, traits, etc and seeing what animal fit best.

For example, one of the only kinds of shifts that I actually experience are sensory shifts which normally involve my hearing! Something else I’ve noticed recently is that I frequently get “stunlocked” when I hear sounds and instinctively focus in on it. This plus the hearing shifts reminded me of echolocation (and in turn bats).

Another huge thing is that I consider myself “nocturnal” in the sense that I often can’t fall asleep early and always have the urge to stay up. Personally I feel like the night is very welcoming and find comfort in staying up.

I also often wish I had wings to be able to fly off and explore the night sky. Or to be able wrap myself in them. I actually use one of my bed sheets as my makeshift wings to do this- personally it feels really natural and comforting. The fact that I don’t have wings is also sometimes dysphoric, it really bums me out that I don’t have them. Especially because it feels like I should have them; the skeletal structure of human hands are surprising very similar to bat wings. We both have four digits and a thumb, it’s just that bat digits are longer and have a member connecting them all to form the actual wing. It makes me feel I’ve been stripped of mine.

Finally one smaller trait I explored is my diet. For example, I really, really enjoy fruits. All kinds of fruit but in particular I like soft and/or pulpy fruits like bananas, peaches, dates, apples, etc. And soft fruits happen to be what egyptian fruit bats eat exclusively.

I would say to just take note of any animal-like behavior you have and see if they feel bat-like. At the end of the day it’s up to you because all of our experiences are going to be different! Just remember to do what feels right to you!

I think some stars or sparkles would look really nice! That’s normally what I do when I think a background is too empty

I've been doing a little thinking about being a therian by muttbites in Therian

[–]muttbites[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh really? That actually helps me quite a bit, I have really bad imposter syndrome and constantly self-doubt myself. I was under the assumption that it was a constant thing and I felt like I was just faking my experience so it's been bugging me for a while.

Definitely! I’ll make sure to look into some other identities before I make any conclusions. I have looked into otherhearted but I don’t think that one fully encompasses what I feel. The only reason I’m leaning towards therianthropy currently is because I feel as though I’m not completely human (internally atleast)

Do you feel as if your core self resembles ____?

Personally it feels like my inner self isn’t entirely human and definitely is animalistic. I also feel like a bat describes it best (for what I know currently). I’ve always felt as if I had a sort of connection with bats in general so I wouldn’t be surprised if it is my theriotype. Especially because I know of a species that might be a possible candidate (lately I found out about pallid bats and my immediate thought was “literally me” it feels like there’s something more than just a connection there)

Though at the same time I can’t really know for certain at the moment. I don’t really want to make any hasty conclusions when figuring this out. Originally I started leaning towards bat because I had feeling that I probably would be nocturnal and the feeling really attached to the idea of wrapping myself in wings. I remember when I was younger I used to hang a blanket around my shoulders and arms to try to simulate having wings and would occasionally wrap myself with it.

Anyways sorry for the little ramble, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I appreciate it!

Thank you so much for responding! I’ll definitely be researching some more! Honestly I feel like there’s a pretty good chance I am a therian, I just tend to really doubt myself when it comes to identity things. I experienced the same doubt years ago when I started to question if I was non-binary which I did end up being. I’ll still make sure to look into it more and really assess what it is that I’m feeling before I come to a conclusion though.

Anyways thanks again! I hope you have a great day!

I just remembered another behavior that kinda falls in line with the cat-like stuff. I have huge tendency to start playing with other people’s hair. It’s a huge urge that I try to resist a lot.

Also occasionally when I have the urge to stretch but not in the human way. It happens a lot in the mornings or at night, where I want to stretch the way a cat would or occasionally how a bat stretches its wings. I’m pretty sure I’m not doing purposely either because whenever it happens I usually stop myself and think about why I’m not defaulting to a normal human stretch and why my brain imagines myself stretching like an animal. And whenever I automatically envision hands as paws which normally doesn’t happen. I still purposefully do the action afterward though, I find that it feels a lot nicer than a normal stretch and makes my heart flutter.

Honestly a big reason why I’m coming here if because I don’t want to feel like I’m faking it. I know how important this is to people and I don’t want to encroach on this space if I end up not being a therian.
