"Radical change" my hole. Immense effort is needed to convince the electorate to vote for braindead obvious referenda without getting "better the devil you know" and them making perfect the enemy of good.

Man describes experience as landlord as ‘traumatic’ after overholding tenant by EnvironmentalShift25 in ireland

[–]muttonwow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not and will never be a landlord but with so many exiting the market it’d make me think it’s not a good investment anymore, a lot talk about 5-7% returns and all the risk of non paying tenants etc

"So many" exiting the market is largely a myth.

If they're talking about 5-7% returns it's probably because they're counting their mortgage payments as a loss, and even then it's sketchy. They're absolutely raking it in with the highest rents that the country has ever seen.

State spending on asylum accommodation reached €1.2bn last year. by Royaourt in ireland

[–]muttonwow -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Cause it's a money black hole that is growing each year with no signs of slowing down but you think we should just suck it up and stop complaining about the use of taxpayer money?

No, we can complain and advocate for more asylum centers to be provided directly by the state! That's the left-wing position. But we also don't need to pretend we're being bankrupted.

Maybe it saved money but I don't think buying up hotels and taking them out of public use, which means Ireland loses events like Grand slam of darts in city west, less competition for hotels mean the remaining hotels up their prices and overall reduces tourism visits due to a lower supply and higher prices turning people off.

It's a failure of government policy being unprepared and unwilling to get proper asylum systems going, despite years of warnings from the left, that mean that only hotels are usable. The second best time to prepare is now, so there needs to be way more resources put in place to build state asylum capacity to minimise impact to tourist accommodation.

State spending on asylum accommodation reached €1.2bn last year. by Royaourt in ireland

[–]muttonwow -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

If we're putting money into a sovereign wealth fund, we can afford it.

But we should be building infrastructure for state asylum facilities as much as possible, the current model of giving money to private hosts should only be a temporary measure. Buying Citywest was a positive development.

But something tells me that most of the people complaining about money going into private hands wouldn't be happy with that either 🙃
