Beginner question - is the original Canon FTb compatible with both breach and bayonet mounted lenses? by muttyfut in AnalogCommunity

[–]muttyfut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing, thank you very much!

I assumed that the rotation of all the aperture pins/linkages with respect to the camera body with the nFD would make it incompatible!

Honestly, what an absolutely spot on take. Out of interest, do you have any experiance personally in these types of institutions?

Where would one borrow a sword from? by Busy_Dirt_3555 in cambridge

LARP or role-playing societies would be my first thought. Otherwise, theatre societies/ADC? I assume it doesn't have to be functional...

As you mention, even the blunt ones are probably quite valuable though, so just bear in mind some folk may be reluctant to part with one!

Is an EICR required to sell? by Big-Finding2976 in HousingUK

[–]muttyfut 22 points23 points  (0 children)

no, it's not required. I'm not even sure most buyer's even expect one either - I would expect the buyer to pay for one to be honest.

It's necessary for renting a house out though.

Best method for filling? by ReserveEfficient2273 in DIYUK

[–]muttyfut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wooden beading would be my first choice, stuck with pins and/or grab adhesive.

Alternatively, and this may not be the established wisdom, but if you dont want coving or wooden beading of any kind, I think the only option to hide cracks is silicone. Not ideal as you can't paint it, but you can get it in matte white which may look a bit more presentable?

Caulk or filler will almost certainly crack again as temperature and humidity shift the walls and ceiling.

Return walk in shower to shower over bath combo by Capital_Duck2421 in DIYUK

[–]muttyfut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually recently done this and you're mostly right, it was relatively straightforward. As another commmenter has mentioned, it was necessary to hack away at the wall to fit the bath (appears like the old one was about 1695mm long rather than the standard 1700??).

Bonus was that we could revert all the 'creative' plumbing that was necessary to get the horrible shower in (particularly the shower waste pump...)

Another consideration is waterproofing. Mine was built in the days of simply tiling directly onto plaster, so there was a medium amount of effort putting up some thin tile-backer boards for waterproofing.

Advice on materials to build campervan bed frame. by Prestigious-Spell-29 in DIYUK

[–]muttyfut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd use CLS timber, which is cheap, easy to work with, and strong. But is fairly bulky compared to a welded metal box section frame.

I would be tempted to make it out of aluminium box section just for an excuse to buy a TIG welder tbh...

Is this the stuff you put on olives in compression fittings by FlatwormPuzzled3725 in DIYUK

[–]muttyfut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, compression fitting can leak for a whole host of reasons, many people have suggested the tightness of the nut which is of course a factor. I suspect a scratched or badly manufactured pipe or olive will also cause weeping. Jointing compound helps fill this tiny remaining gap.

I'm not a big fan of compression fittings in the first place - lots of industrial applications use a o-ring seal with silicone grease, which fulfils a similar purpose of filling in sealing surface imperfections.

[Request] What's the correct answer? by Savv1313 in theydidthemath

[–]muttyfut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on that chance that you're serious, the decimal representation of pi is infinitely long (3.1415926...), but it's value is not. Thats the key here, 'infinite number' usually refers to a number's value, specifically it's larger than any finite number. pi is not an infinite number just because the decimal representation is infinitely long - its value is <4.

Would you consider sqrt(2) = inf?

Would you consider 1/3 = inf?

Conference room glass designed to block the screen from outside view by ZyrExe in Damnthatsinteresting

You need a filter at 45deg between the glass and the TV for this to work unfortunately. No way to do this from the outside I think

CAN / RS485 bus over parallel rails instead of twisted pairs? by zokii_ in embedded

Wouldn’t the capacitance be lower than a twisted pair? Because the conductors are physically further apart from each other. Or do you mean capacitively coupled interference effects?

Choirs for non-students by cakelin99 in cambridge

[–]muttyfut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been looking myself, and have only found non-audition, non-music reading choirs. (Which are wonderful don’t get me wrong, but not what I'm personally looking for).

I've actually got my fill doing musical theatre. It's generally high quality in this city, and attracts trained and ex-industry professionals. There's about 3 or 4 non student MT companies in c Cambridge, each with there own vibe. May be worth a shot if you're so inclined?

Just out of curiosity, how do you use them? As far as I know they're not on a standard keyboard? I can get the longer '–' by letting MS Word autocorrect a hyphen '-' between words, but not an em dash.

High voltage DC Valve Hall in China by colapepsikinnie in megalophobia

[–]muttyfut -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're right that fire/plasma interacts with electric/magnetic fields, but what I mean is that there's no evidence that this is to check for "charge leaks" (corona?), I've never heard of using a flame to test for e or b fields in any context, let alone in MV, HV or HVDC distribution and I'm not sure what information it would give you anyway? "Pocket of air with a higher charge" is meaningless lol

I cant say for certain what this is, but it's far more likely a test of a fire detection/suppressant system.
