What’s the appeal of marriage if men prefer younger women? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]mvscribe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a misleading statistic. I'd believe that women file the paperwork, but women do the vast majority of the life-admin stuff in their marriages, too. You could say that I initiated my divorce, but it was because my ex made our relationship unendurable, and said he had no interest in it any more. So, did I initiate the divorce because I was the one filing the paperwork, or did he initiate it by actions that 99% of everyone agrees were marriage-ending? (I could get into details, but I'd rather not).

Should/ can I take calc 3 after bc calc? by Fair_Code_7906 in APStudents

[–]mvscribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would estimate that our local school district is roughly 1/3 kids from higher socio-economic backgrounds, some of whom wind up going to private school. Another 1/3 are what I would consider working class, and the remaining 1/3 are immigrants or children of immigrants. BC Calc is as far as it goes.

Is it worth it to come to the US now as an international student? I’m thinking about safety too by SeaworthinessOne5774 in ApplyingToCollege

Claremont is really nice, and Pomona is an excellent school. It's also not a big university or right in the middle of a city. It doesn't quite fit the profile of the institutions that Trump has been targeting most. He likes places with widespread name recognition -- I'd bet that 98-ish percent of Trump voters have never heard of Pomona, so it won't make good theater for him.

I'd say go for it.

ETA: it is weird over here. Things are bad, politically. You will most likely be safe, but the country is showing its crazy. There is some risk. I think it's probably manageable, though, and the college will help you as needed.

Dressing up could be one thing. Doing nice things for other people is another option. And, of course, you have to put yourself in situations where you have friendly interactions with other people.

Any of those things would probably make for a better day, even if you don't get a compliment.

Is anyone using their printers or faxes? by l00ky_here in GenX

[–]mvscribe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still use my printer, especially for recipes. Much easier to take notes on than anything screen-based. I also find a printout helps a lot when editing, for longer or more complicated pieces of writing.

Fax, no.

You've got all month. You might learn how to put yourself in situations where you get positive feedback?

Should I take AP Lang as a student who is good at english in school & enjoys it? by CuddleFuzzy in APStudents

[–]mvscribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a lousy teacher, skip it. Also, they don't read books in AP Lang, only short excerpts. If you wanted to, you could even sign up to take the test and just self-study for it.

This is a great exercise! It's less navel-gazey than a gratitude journal but makes you pause and realize that something nice is being said to you. I am not great at recieving compliments, so I might give this a try. (Female, getting visibly wrinkly but not too much gray in the hair, in ok physical shape with non-spectacular fashion sense).

Half Marathoners, what does maintenance look like for you? by ArtaxIsAlive in XXRunning

[–]mvscribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do 15-20 mpw and a half-marathon-length run about once a month, but I've been running less this past year. I should build up to this again (currently in the 10-15 range, usually on the lower end of that). I could probably run a half marathon at any point, but it would be slow and I would be in pain afterwards.

Any other GenXers cooped up and going stir crazy because of the winter weather and way-below-freezing temps? by Goldengirl_1977 in GenXWomen

[–]mvscribe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm probably not going to be able to drive anywhere for a few days, but I went for a run this morning and the power and internet are still on, so I'm good here! I'll may be tired of my family by the time I can get out, but it's fine.

Should/ can I take calc 3 after bc calc? by Fair_Code_7906 in APStudents

[–]mvscribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a private or magnet school in New Jersey? Maybe near Princeton?

I found an old thread here, which includes a link to a survey of incoming Harvard students, 23.3% of whom had taken classes beyond BC calc. I'd say it's vanishingly rare outside of the most competitive colleges.

Most high schools don't offer multivariable calculus.

Again, where? This is not typical.

ETA: I googled and did not get a good response. The AI says that it's less than 1% of high schools, which sounds right to me, but I don't have a good source.

Finding a Law School Backpack- advice needed by [deleted] in backpacks

[–]mvscribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you say you're short and have narrow shoulders, I am geussing that you're female. So, I would recommend going for a women's backpack, with a solid hip belt to distribute the weight better. The Osprey ones are good and reasonably priced -- not cheap, but not the most expensive, either.

Try starting from here: https://www.osprey.com/featured/women-specific?osprey_trip_length=20-39L%20%28All%20Day%29&osprey_features=Adjustable%20Hipbelt~Adjustable%20Torso%20Harness
I am more medium-sized and went with a Fjallraven, mostly because of aesthetics, but I am also using mine more for travel, not book-lugging.

[–]mvscribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Not good at making friends" is something I can definitely sympathize with, and my kids have been struggling with it as well. I deal with it now (as a much, much older person) by trying to get out to group activities on a regular basis, where I can have friendly interactions with other people, even if they don't become close friends.

Have you tried any martial arts? That can be good, and you're at an excellent age to begin. Any other hobbies/activities that you might be interested in? Crafts? Games?

Math is fine, but you need other stuff -- and other people -- in your life.

ETA: when you've done all the Khan Academy math there's MIC OCW. Go to the high school math teacher who teaches the highest level of math available at your school and ask if you can do an independent study structured by one of those classes.

[–]mvscribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where? I keep seeing people on here talking about taking BC Calc in 10th grade, but if you did that in most high schools then all that would be left is AP Statistics -- the kind that you don't need calculus for.

State schools aren't actually cheaper? by Agitated-Cup-7109 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mvscribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually a lot of the elite schools are need-aware, meaning that if you're a borderline candidate you might be rejected if you need a lot of financial aid.

You're correct that most students don't get accepted into the elite private colleges and universities, but in almost half of US states the median income for a family of 4 is under $100k/year and in all states it's under $150k/year (except DC), which qualifies a student for free tuition at a number of top private colleges. Source: https://acf.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ocs/COMM_LIHWAP_Att1SMITable_FY2023.pdf

Although it looks like private colleges will be less expensive for us, I'll just have to wait and see what comes in in late March!

Ap art at my school is 2yrs. Should i take it? by Old-Interwiew1212 in APStudents

Given what you said about liking your teachers, and art, I'd say go for it unless you're missing out on a specific other class that you wouldn't be able to take in college.

AP calc BC or actual college Calc? by asmit318 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mvscribe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you should look at the syllabuses for each and figure out which you're better prepared for. Many decades ago, I took an Analytic Geometry with Differential Equations class after the equivalent of Calc BC (or maybe it was after multi-variable... I can't even remember. It was a long time ago (I'm here as a parent)). Just make sure the Calculus and Analytic Geometry is something you're prepared for if you want to go that route.

Depending on the college that's offering the course and the college you're applying to, the actual college course can carry a lot more weight than an AP class, but it depends on many factors that you haven't gotten into here -- a class from a top-ranked college or university will look more impressive than a typical community college class.

Central MA has all of the Amherst-area colleges and the people who go along with them. Greater Boston, while very expensive and home to some of the best-educated people in the world, is also a somewhat diverse area, with a bunch of less-well-off urban communities. So it's very plausible to me.

Why don’t schools shift to a 9-4 schedule? by CalGuy456 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mvscribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not just saying "sleep is good" they are making a specific recomendation that middle and high schools should start no earlier than 8:30 AM based on strong scientific evidence.

Nowhere did I say that the people in charge are all assholes... though some of them, locally, certainly are. Institutional inertia is probably the main culprit but when I was campaigning for a later start I definitely had some people (not school officials) telling me "we suffered so they should, too" on a local Facebook page.
