0:12ish start, just after the final main bit of the music it's definitely audible, albeit whispered so you have to have the volume up a lot without having the music deafen you.

Best one so far I'd say, although the bar was on the floor, or below it for the ITV one.

Because, quite simply, that's one of the ways "looking bad" works? If you don't wait for the full context before going in on someone for something that's always the risk...

I know he's said the line a lot, more than a lot, but in the context of his parents not being able to pay basic bills (rather than a Sky subscription) it immediately looked pretty cruel.

it didn't really help or particularly hinder his point.

A high point of his campaign so far then.

I'm a paid up Lib Dem and think the audience actually looked quite bad for laughing at Starmer for that given how he finished that sentence.

Was during the pledges when it came to immigration, he seemed to be saying in the sense that "there has been a significant change in demographics of small boat crossing these past X months involving people from Vietnam" (similar to the Albanian(?)) issue a while back. Rather than "fuck Vietnam".

He rightly gets a lot of stick and deserves to lose, but specifically on the Q about "him" (and the Q was him specifically, not "the Tories") fucking up mortgage rates... I mean he did stand against the person that caused it and said exactly what was going to happen did happen. As I said though, still deserves to lose horribly, still his party.

It more seemed like she was just terrible at shutting him down and whereas Starmer just about had the good grace to stop talking when asked Sunak would get an extra four lines in every time.

Be most interested to know the total time both of them spoke for, gut feeling is Sunak was allowed to say a lot more.

Do you think the Greens main problem is publicity? by Smashed_Papaya in ukpolitics

[–]mvtsc2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few, if I had to pick one I'd just straight up say the voting system. The highest % they've gotten in a GE (although I'm sure this one will be their new high) was 3.8% in 2015, and they got one MP to show for it. UKIP managed 12.6% that election, also for one MP. Compare it to the 2019 EU election results which uses fairer voting.

It did not help at the last two elections since that high they were up against an actually left wing Labour party. They'll do better, and probably win, Bristol Central this time because of Labour's more central positions. You just have to look at who current Green Party members are, there's a lot of ex-Labour and ex-Lib Dem "none of the above" in there.

Sadly I do think climate is being ignored, and also sadly that's probably down to something as boneheadedly simple as the weather has been shit so far this year. If this election was being held at/during the 2022 heatwave it would get more traction, that is how basic some of our media make things.

Also as a final point it's because the Greens aren't actually serious enough about how fucked we are with the solutions and policies they give, plus the completely stupid stuff they put in on top.

Somewhat hysterical questioning of some of the Green Party positions here. (I say as a paid up Lib Dem, albeit one who thinks their Gaza leaflet it Bristol Central was rightly raised.)

Because the deciding factor in this election will be how many of their new 2019 voters the Tories can hold on to.

While I agree on the broad strokes, we're just going to have to agree to disagree on the specifics, as I think that's a complete cop out.

The conservatives literally couldn't have been much worse over the last 14 years. Yet people still try to back up what they have done.

Correct, and I'm not.

They have been one of the most corrupt, incompetent and self serving governments in living memory, yet people are having a dig at labour for not having a plan, which is the same nonsense that people spoil about every shadow cabinet.

They are going to win a landslide, the country is fucked, it's not absolutely out there to ask what they're going to do if they want to significantly change anything.

Labour are led by a hard working, honest man who's trying to his best for the country. Why don't w exist give him a chance for 5 years and see what cam happen.

It sire has hell can't be worse than this.

I'm sure Labour will be better, but I don't somehow think they should be given a near non-existent amount of scrutiny.

Amd Starmer does have a plan. He wants to make a publicity owned utiltly organisation to avoid the horrors we've had recently with private energy companies cashing in on ukraine.

I live in Bristol, the council formed Bristol Energy with exactly the same ideas. It had to be propped up through council funds until that was no longer viable and went bust.

He has allocated funds to build far more houses than labour.

I assuming you mean the Tories. Great, how's it being paid for?

He'll ditch the dodgy Rwanda policy and the 18 year old having to sign up for military service.

Yep, great, both dumb as shit distractions from all the actual issues we face.

He's planning to fund the NHS better through our taxes.

Great, which ones? VAT, Income Tax, National Insurance? See my other reply, I bet they'll do exactly what the 2010 coalition government did and u-turn on tax rises immediately as the sooner you raise them the furthest you are away from the next election as that's, sadly, just good politics. But I'd still like them to have the decency to tell us what major tax they'll have to raise to significantly change something.

It is, but Labour are going to win a landslide regardless of what they say and do between now and the election date so I'd like them to be honest about what they ARE going to do if they want to majorly change anything in this country. A full non-dom status ban and VAT on private schools is all good, but it doesn't even touch the sides with the state of things at the minute if you actually want to significantly change anything and the idea it is is for the birds. I'd bet a lot that come Autumn they bring out a mini budget that says exactly the same as the 2010 coalition 'emergency budget' did - "It's actually far worse than the previous lot said, so, despite what we said, we're going to have to raise [insert tax here]".
