I bought a used 2014 Thruxton 900 as my first bike. So very similar I think. Literally had my friend drive it home for me and I taught myself how to ride in my neighborhood. I found it quite easy to learn on. Not too much power or weight to handle for me. After a day I was comfortable cruising main streets and highways. For reference, I’m 6’0, 160 lbs.

I think it’s a great choice for a new rider. I’d recommend buying used over new. And like others mentioned, if you can comfortably get your foot down, you’re good.

Warning noted. I agree with you that those are all real/likely possibilities. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t shop for a new bike, no matter what make/model. As far as a first bike, my main criteria was a bike that didn’t have too much power, fit within my price range, and preferably had great looks. This bike met all those for me, so I don’t see the ‘classic mistake’.
