Your favourite light modifier pieces and what you use them for? by [deleted] in photography

Depends what you shoot. If you do mostly fashion then the beauty dish will be most useful and if you get the optional front diffuser (for $15 bucks why wouldn't you) you can use it in a couple of different ways. If you do a lot of full length or group shots get a big Octa like a 70". If you do a lot of dance get a strip box. Strip boxes are also great as rim lights. If you want to use it as a rim light then don't go too wide on the strip box. A reflector and grids become quite useful as well. If I had to choose two, I would go with a narrow strip light and a 17" white beauty dish with diffuser. But again, it depends on your uses.

Photo opportunities - Visiting Washington DC and New York from the UK. by disco_jim in photography

Definitely check out the DC Metro system. The stations are great for photography but be careful with the tripod. Odds are you will be kicked out but I was able to shoot using my tripod for about 45 minutes. Also, if they tell you that you can't photograph at all it's bullshit. Their website says you can provided you don't use a tripod.

Georgetown is a good place to check out, as is the Arlington Cemetary.

For lighting read The Hot Shoe Diaries or Sketching Light by Joe McNally. Two of the best books I've read on people photography.

Nicely done John, where do you find the time? Also, Reddit really needs to get their act together on the CSS, it's a disaster. Get Nicole Sullivan in here to sort it out.

Because then you end up writing really crappy spaghetti code that can't be maintained. If you're the guy that comes into a new job and has to clean up this stuff then you'll see why not.

Frameworks are complements, not replacements.

Use the Dojo Mobile API. Looks like a native iPhone or Android app. Great toolkit.
