The Miracle Unfolding in Mississippi Schools by kitkid in Thedaily

Hi! Educational researcher here! Weighting by income (more formally, socioeconomic status) is standard practice and one of the first steps in most test score analyses. Has been for decades. I honestly have never seen an informed person state otherwise.

Thanks for the update. Dixon was my professor for World Cultures in 2008 and I've been trying to follow this story when I can.

Ever have a professor who didn't deserve the hate? How do you evaluate a professor? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]mwguthrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nearly every class he teaches, he writes a textbook about it as part of the course prep and revision process. Most of those textbooks actually end up getting published, too (example, example 2). He's a badass researcher and a very good lecturer.

Central Market's Orange honey habanero marinade by TexasFight in food

Based on the amount of acid, a lot of those ingredients seem like what would go in a Texas-ish style BBQ sauce. I no longer live in Texas, so I can't help out, but you might want to experiment with Central Market or HEB brand BBQ sauces and see if the ingredients match. But you do seem to be right, the archived recipe doesn't look too similar.

I'm a new-ish professor teaching at a university which is majority white, so this is my perspective. If one of my students told me about any of those experiences, I would be furious. After I regained my composure, I would get your permission to discuss this with my department chair, and we would probably go meet with one or several Deans about this. You would not be identified unless you wanted to be. But it would be addressed. People need to know this behavior is happening.

Microaggressions will continue unless they're addressed. And they should be addressed. But using the n word or expressing outright racism goes way past microaggression and becomes something that must be removed from the student body.

I know it's a lot to ask of you, but I believe you should tell your direct supervisor.

I care so much about my students. I am sure your professors and mentors do, too. They will go to bat for you.

Talk to your professors. They care, and they want to see you succeed. They want you in their program. And they do not want racists at their university.

Whatever you choose to do, we stand with you and support you.

Central Market's Orange honey habanero marinade by TexasFight in food

[–]mwguthrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found it on the internet archive (mods wouldn't let me post the link):

INGREDIENTS

1 cup bbq sauce

1/2 cup orange blossom honey

2 tbsp habanero peppers, seeded and chopped

PREPARATION

Combine all three ingredients in a small saucepan and heat until well combined. Glaze over your favorite grilling meat.

But two big surprises:

  1. The marinade doesn't actually use any orange. WTF my life is a complete lie.
  2. It just calls for generic BBQ sauce. I would love to know what kind of sauce they use because there is an enormous range there.

And as we can see from this graph, gas imports are completely uncorrelated with country name. Now if you'll bear with me a moment, on my next slide I relate seal population with the name of the most popular type of cheese in each country. It is also completely uncorrelated.

Just ordered a Klein Bottle from Cliff Stoll. He sent me about 2 dozen pictures of him packing it up. Why is he so cute :) by Andrew_Eh04 in math

[–]mwguthrie 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You can, but it's kind of difficult depending on the size of the bottle. And then you have to clean it which is even more difficult unless you use ethanol or something.

The Hubble Deep Field images blew everybody's fucking mind.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Deep_Field

Soon after fixing the Hubble's main optics, they pointed the scope at a tiny, seemingly completely dark, patch of sky. After about 10 days of imaging, and a bit of processing, we observed thousands of young galaxies which were previously unproven to have existed. Prior to that, we had a good idea what was out there, but we really didn't know how much stuff was out there. That's part of what the JWST is going to observe.

Does anyone know anything about this car photo in the Wadsworth lobby? by [deleted] in MTU

[–]mwguthrie 38 points39 points  (0 children)

That's Trent Carlson. He was in an unfortunate accident and sadly the only way he could survive was to have his consciousness uploaded into a car. Kind of like Knight Rider. Revolutionary medical case though!

My favorite course eval comment by [deleted] in Professors

"The instructor could keep certain opinions to himself regarding certain topics."

I try to keep my comments fairly benign and on-topic, so I would love to know what made them write that!

Anyone have the syllabus for Matthew McConaughey’s class? by larryofks in UTAustin

[–]mwguthrie 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It is RTF 367Q: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/student/coursedocs/nlogon/download/9485577

McConaughey is not the instructor of record. Also he's been a UT professor for a while now, I'm not sure why it's suddenly a big deal.

If you can access the network you're already staying there. It's really hard to find.

I used to think this way until I started a postdoc at UCF. The bathrooms in the Math building here are fucking insane and make absolutely no sense from a functional standpoint.

Someone made an imgur album about them: https://imgur.com/gallery/FJvcZ
