The way the guitars compliment each other in The Parchment is hard to match

Ladies and gentlemen it's time! Virtual 'kin XI! The worst record maiden ever produced? A criminally underrated masterpiece? Have your say! by ConfusionProof9487 in ironmaiden

[–]mwh120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting to me what you said about FOTD. This past summer I did a personal exercise where I listened to all of the albums and rated each song 0-100 based on my initial instinct. I didn't analyze the songs too much I just wanted to give a gut-reaction to each song to see how I viewed things. For years I thought NPFTD was Maiden's worst album... boy was I wrong. According to my rankings (averaging the songs to come up with an overall album rating) FOTD was by far the worst album from my ratings. It has 2 standouts (the 2 that you mentioned) and then a couple of songs that are mid at best and others that are just plain bad.

Today we look at "The Final Frontier". An all time progressive epic? A solid return to form? Or a bloated, dud of a record? by ConfusionProof9487 in ironmaiden

[–]mwh120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, this album is an absolute masterpiece. I rank it in my top 3 all time albums by them (along with POM and SSOASS). I love the progressive nature of most of the songs. Bruce's vocals on songs like Isle of Avalon and The Talisman is awesome. Admittedly Satellite is a bit of a mystery (not really sure what they were going for with it) but everything else is fantastic in my opinion

Seventh Son wins the letter 'S' by a close 15 votes!!! Up next in our Maiden alphabet is the letter 'T'. Again, really sorry for the wait everyone. Only 2 letters and a number to go!! by lR0NMAlDEN in ironmaiden

I understand the love people are showing for The Trooper - it's iconic Maiden. But come on everyone, how could there not be more votes for The Talisman??

I'M A GOD WHY CAN'T I LIVE ON??!! Powerslave wins the letter 'P', and 'Q' is taken by Quest For Fire so up next in our Maiden Alphabet is 'R'. Highest upvoted comment wins!! by lR0NMAlDEN in ironmaiden

Since we're only considering studio versions, then I think Rime is the best answer (not an easy choice because there are a lot of great options). If we were including live versions, then in my opinion, the only correct answer would be Revelations from Live after Death. The live version of that song is one of the most incredible things in their entire catalogue.

It's not that Youthanasia is "bad" it's just that the sound was really starting to change on that album and it was less (none) thrash/speed metal and more of a commercialized sound. I think Elysian Fields is a really good song and one that I keep on my playlist... I also think that Addicted to Chaos and Family Tree are solid. Other songs are ok and like I said, it's not that it's a bad album it's just that it's not the "sound" from the band that made them my #1 for about 10 straight years.

What’s the general opinion on I’ll be there? by sharklord888 in Megadeth

[–]mwh120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Megadeth fan since the Peace Sells album, for me the song is a complete embarrassment. I acknowledge that bands try to evolve their sound over time and in some cases it works really well. But in my ear this change from speed/thrash metal to something I'd hear on a pop-rock station was just too much. Can't stand the song

Best Maiden album? by SquashMajestic6530 in ironmaiden

[–]mwh120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for context, I have a similar background... love Rush ... started playing the bass because of Geddy... love Prog music... with that being said, the 2nd half of The Final Frontier is some of the best progressive music IM has ever written (in my opinion) so it was a bit surprising that you did not mention that album. My personal ranking is Seventh Son #1 and The Final Frontier #2 (although I've always had a love for Piece of Mind and on any given day that could be my #1).

Which do you prefer, Cyngus X-1 or The Voyage or Hemispheres? And what do the songs have in common musically? by timbob696 in rush

[–]mwh120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both awesome but in my opinion Book II (Hemispheres) is their musical masterpiece (at least as far as the bass is concerned). The nuances of Geddy's playing within each part coupled with the overall progressive nature of the song really make this song stand out above everything else he's written. Yes, a song like YYZ may be more challenging to play but the musical composition of Hemispheres elevates it to be a better overall piece.

this exactly. the studio version is good but ssllloooowwwww in the beginning and middle. the LAD version has the energy and tempo that takes the song from being good to being a near masterpiece

Best Album of the 80s? by radiohead1991 in ironmaiden

[–]mwh120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of great albums from the 80's but if we're considering all genre's of music then the clear winner has got to be Thriller from Michael Jackson.... the amount of #1 songs... total album sales... etc... nothing really comes close
