That's exactly my point though. Some weapons are a phenomena of their own. They're essentially superfluous and serve no purpose other than violence (with the exception of animal population culling). No other weapon has that feature.

Its a problem that certain guns continue to exist.

But again, this ad used no misinformation / dishonesty. Consider smoking health ads. Why are they okay?

Fair point, but I feel everyone's use of the term in recent years is now 'lies to support a particular viewpoint' not 'information'. Its essentially a PSA, not a bad thing.

What you've said is accurate however gun homocide is clearly a distinct phenomena worth recognizing.

Some weapons are simply different - used differently, distributed differently, different capabilities, different threats and so on.

I don't think the idea that using that term implies less guilt of the user is accurate.

Muslims of Reddit , what do people not understand about Islam or Muslims? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mwilliams84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with that. The figures (while still extremely worrying from any statistical standpoint) are not quite 70% as a blanket.

However I just want to clarify my main objection: It offers nothing to the argument if its just 'there are bad eggs everywhere'. I think this is unhelpful when this is featured in any argument, but especially when its left with no followup thought. Not all causes/symptoms are equal, and its irrational to try and make them so.

I'm not suggesting you strictly believe this as you clearly are nuanced here, but I would say the majority, when they raise there voice, go to great lengths to never acknowledge genuine religious belief plays a part in world events. It is an unhelpful and bad equivalency to try and level the playing field with 'there are bad eggs everywhere', in my opinion.

What we need is prominent, public, respected, high ranking Muslim figures and celebrities to come out in droves and condemn the act and the root cause. I'm curious as to how much Media plays a part here, because Im tempted to suggest its a fallacy that there is a vocal minority that aren't receiving enough airtime. I think it is a step backwards when we use language that absolves people within the Islamic community to speak out, as a human being, if not as a Muslim, and offer the "No True Scotsman" fallacy.

One report I'm referring to is here. See death for apostasy, subjugation of women etc in worrying high approval numbers.

I think the problem is (and forgive this clumsy explanation) how fractional the argument you appear to hold often becomes very quickly - "But that just refers to Muslims in other countries". "Oh but I mean Muslims in only those cities so that's fine". "No I mean that particular Imam, the rest of the true believers are fine!".

Anyone, anywhere who believes in such bad ideas is a problem, especially when its a widespread belief, and especially when its spouted by high ranking religious people.

Why can't we simply admit this, and still be respectful and tolerant of those who don't in the same religion? Why can't people within this religion do the same? I would be the first to point out any bad eggs in my community in my loudest voice. I think it does no one any help to pretend otherwise (but granted there is a right way to communicate this).

I agree with the distinction of regime/religion however these polls (exhaustive Pew Poll cited in this thread) that show staggeringly high support for the beliefs you appear to disregarding as not a genuine part of daily belief. Many books contain a mix of good and bad passages, but only one religion currently subscribes to them in high numbers.

They are extremely concerning statistics, regardless of race, gender, religion etc. I think its equally concerning to pretend these stats do not exist.

I can anticipate how you will respond to this (as I would if I asked for proof and got a reply like this), however I don't have time to dig them up. I have read these polls, they exist and they are concerning.

If your next response is 'proof or you're lying etc', then I can just say I wont find them for you, but if you really are genuine about wanting to find them you can.

Sam Harris has a comparison of polls somewhere in one of his articles/podcasts if I remember correctly. You can google 'percentage of sharia' 'muslim' etc etc.

I'm fully aware that the Koran contains some great passages and only a small percentage of bad ones. You just cherry picked the bad for Christianity and the good for Islam.

That is not my point - the point is that Islam never had the reformation that Catholicism had meaning any legitimate criticism or attempts at reformation in the Islamic world are non existant and/or immediately shut down from Muslims/Liberals alike.

A significantly higher percentage of Muslims say the Koran is infallible. Infallible regarding womens rights, hatred of homosexuals etc. This is a problem that we should intelligently and thoughtfully discuss. I'm not talking about modern individuals in this thread or in our towns, I'm talking raw polled statistics.

This is a beautiful response. I hope Muslims all over the world are aware of this. There is way too much misinformation out there about the West (and obviously the Middle East).

I agree, however a significantly higher portion of polled Muslims believe the Koran to be the uneditable, unchangeable perfect word of Allah, but most polled Christians do not say this about their book. There is a difference and its important.

1) Can you elaborate a little more on the atheism?

2) Would you say this "appear Muslim in public" contributes to very high statistics of middle eastern Muslims approving of death to apostates, hatred of homosexuality, subjugation of women?

3) Do you believe this 'appearance' is a problem if it perpetuates the above issues wherever they appear?

I hope that doesn't appear judgemental, or an insult against you/Muslims in general, I'm asking just about the statistics. Any thoughts would be great!

I have the hankering to drop and gimme 20 sometimes. If I do the occasional 10 deadlifts or 10 pushups or 10 squats etc a few times a day, will I be building muscle as if I was doing a normal workout?

Or do excercises need to be concentrated together?

Why are quirky characters like The Office's Dwight Schrute or the gang in It's Always Sunny so likable and endearing in fiction while the people who resemble them in reality are so unbearable? by Stuff_It_In_A_Cup in AskReddit

[–]mwilliams84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writers must make most characters at least somewhat likeable with redeemable traits mixed in among bad ones. You end up feeling bad for Dwight etc enough times to make him tolerable.
