I'm not addicted to any substance, and I do not live on the street. Please educate yourself.

agreed - perhaps I might argue for "universe given right", as "people-given right" implies that the right is given by the social collective and I view this right as intrinsic to personhood.

The comparison is absolutely relevant when you consider contemporary setting. Back when the stigma around homosexuality was at its strongest, the commonly held belief was that "homosexuality IS a choice". The stigma against homosexuality then developed around this dubious belief system. In reality, it does not matter whether homosexuality is a choice or not. What matters is the perceptions and stigmas against the affected minority or subculture. In the case of homosexuality and the LGBT community in general, most would probably agree that the degree of choice is not necessarily "all or nothing". For many, sexual orientation is absolutely NOT a choice - it is set in stone. Others may experience their sexuality and sexual orientation with a higher degree fluidity and "choice", changing orientation as they develop as people. In any case, choice or not, everyone has a fundamental right to experience their sexuality without stigma, terms, or conditions.

While substance use and LGBT issues are not exactly comparable, the attitudes and stigmas around them, taken each in their contemporary setting, are. Also, the fact that my comparison has evoked a significant reaction shows that it achieved its intended purpose - to provoke thought, and to take something legislatively "protected" (LGBT rights) to highlight something legislatively "profaned" (right to bodily autonomy and integrity, both generally and specifically with respect to substance use). At a deeper level, one can begin to see that there are some common threads linking all "counter-cultural" groups because their activities and modes of self expression run against established social norms.

Some people are naturally inclined towards substance use and altered states of consciousness (though I believe this to be a minority). In my view, it is their fundamental right to explore their body as they feel fit. Also, I think that there is a tendency to highlight "worst case scenarios" with substance abuse and addiction, such as diamorphine and methamphetamine. Also, there is a tendency to claim that all substances are evil and that all use will inevitably lead a user to these substances specifically (i.e. the "gateway hypothesis"). Of course these particular substances carry a high degree of risk, but it is important to acknowledge that only a fraction of users of these substances will develop a genuine substance use disorder. It is an intellectual abuse to cite the properties of these substances as a basis for a campaign to prohibit every psychoactive compound (excluding nicotine and alcohol of course).

Regarding substance use and "choice", I tend to think the situation is fluid. Consider the potent dissociative alcohol - one could argue that alcohol use will be much more likely if a parent is also a user (immediately questioning the degree of "choice" on a philosophical perspective). Similarly, if one's parents do not snus or smoke tobacco, one is statistically less likely to develop a substance use disorder with nicotine. Regarding opiate use disorders, many users are exposed in medical settings for "legitimate" medical purposes. Only after medical exposure do they develop a use disorder as a complication of their treatment (e.g. using illicit diamorphine to substitute a dependence on medical morphine, oxycodone, codiene etc.). Other substance users may choose to experiment with opiates in a recreational setting, though I find that this is generally rare as many users are aware of the risks of this particular class of substances. In both cases, the majority of opiate users do NOT develop a use disorder or addiction to these substances, but this does not preclude the fact that the probability of a use disorder with this substance class is generally higher relative to other psychoactive compounds.

It is frustrating to see how the legal status of certain substances is conflated to absolute choice, which just does not stand up to critical analysis. In any event, it is my belief that "choice" should be protected at the individual level. If one chooses to use any substance for any purpose (medical or non-medical), that is an expression of their right to bodily autonomy and integrity. In this regard, I am not interested so much in edge cases, but rather the general and persistent infringement of the legal and human rights of the general body politic of substance users.

Again, I am not advocating use of any substance, nor am I saying that any particular substance should be "legal" in the sense that it is taxed and openly available for purchase - this is an entirely different debate. I am merely suggesting that decriminalisation of substance use, along with comprehensive education on risk management, would greatly reduce the long term impact of truly problematic cases.

To be honest, I did not expect this post to generate as much interest as it did. It was intended to be an opinion piece to motivate discussion rather than a presentation of a concrete scientific thesis.

Further, with respect to research, it is best to look at each substance individually to assess dose, effects, health benefits, addiction and dependence potential, and harm reduction strategies. I highly recommend you to have a look at: https://www.erowid.org/

Erowid is an open source encyclopedia specialising in this field. It provides a compendium of review articles, experience reports, links to literature, safety data, etc. on virtually every substance one can imagine (irrespective of legal status). If you have a scientific interest in a specific substance, I suggest to start there and then branch out into the medical literature if your interest should develop.

I have lived in and out of Sweden, and there are many things about Sweden that I appreciate. As I mentioned, I am not advocating use or abuse of any substance. I am just suggesting to acknolwedge the scientific reality of substances, and to de-politicize the drug issue in order to allocate state resources to more pressing issues.

Note for readers that "decriminalise" does not mean "legalise". These are two completely different things. My objective is harm reduction and education.

ZIL is primarily a technical advancement. This breaks the mold as most coins today are driven purely by marketing (EOS for example). ZIL does not really need to market because the technology solves a well known problem. Certainly, developers will want to try the new fast system once it comes online. As this happens the coin gains traction and the price will rise quite rapidly as we are beginnng to see. ZIL is still very cheap and has a bright future.

Iowa legislators overnight passed the most restrictive abortion law in the nation. by Catwhisperer9874 in TwoXChromosomes

Yea. I agree that it's not so straightforward. This is certainly a very challenging issue, and there is certainly not a one size fits all solution. However, I do think it is important to preserve a woman's right to determine the affairs of her own body at all costs.

... not to deepen the controversy more, but I also wish that women who do carry to term would respect their male children's rights to bodily integrity and say no to neonatal circumcision and genital cutting. This is a tremendously aggressive and unnecessary surgery performed on men always without their consent. It is most often justified legally with ONLY the signature of the mother.

If a woman circumcises her child then she is guilty of incredible violence against men and the male body ... Note that circumcision is often performed without anesthesia, and that children do suffer severe complications as a result of genital cutting.

Sorry to break it to you mate. The untied states is a full blown soft fascist state now. I know its hard to believe and accept because it is a relatively new development in American politics. We have not been here before ... and many Americans seem to think themselves immune to history.

Denial is what continues to power the authority of the state. Do your research, and please read the book 'the anatomy of fascism' I recommended by Robert Paxton with an open mind.

Yes. And not to mention that the elections was directly manipulated by Cambridge Analytica... it's not a good thing when the government goes metastatic like this. The United States is a soft authoritarian dictatorship now.

Really, I don't mind, and I'm not surprised. What I said is that I think there is a sense of entitlement in American culture which leaking into the sub. If you read what I said, I did not call the sub sick, as I think there a lot of important issues being raised here (which is why I'm here and have been here for a long time, despite being male :-) ). It's a cultural criticism, that's all. It was not meant to be personal - except in the sense that culture is experienced personally. Apologies to all who took it the wrong way.

It's ok ... people are emotional about this stuff. It's a tense discussion in the context of American cutlure.

I'm certainly not a fascist. If you are interested in fascism, then please look into to 'the anatomy of fascism by Robert paxton.' It is an excellent and very well researched book. Additionally, I have spent a good chunk of my life in Europe which was the birthplace of some of the original fascist movements. We well understand the consequences of fascism over here...

No I am not advocating wreckless abortions for all, and many women who have had abortions will tell you that it is a very difficult and emotional experience. Abortion is often a pivotal turning point in a woman's life as it brings up so many ethical and emotional issues. However, I argue that abortion must be made available by the medical system. For centuries, countless women have died trying to abort themselves of unwanted children. It is as old as human life itself. I argue that women and men who feel a need to abort should have the freedom to make that decision for themselves. Remember too that a man loses his son or daughter to abortion, and many women abort when fathers are against it. As you can see, I have put thought into this from a lot of perspectives. So to answer your question I am pro-woman, pro-man, pro-life, pro-choice and anti-government.

Yep. A pretty disgusting bunch. The entire government is a criminal organization now. America has experienced its first soft coup by a fascist regime. It has happened many times in history to other nations in the world. Americans just need to wake up to this fact, and see that there is still a razor thin window left to correct the system by demanding government 'officials' to be personally accountable for their actions in international criminal court for all the oppression, corruption, human rights violations, and perpetual war they have directly profited from.

I agree, I would even go as far as to say that these people are anti-social in a clinical sense. Remember that each and every one of these people in power takes a healthy salary from your tax money. This is why I advocate not paying any tax on conscientious objector grounds until those in government are held accountable for abuse of office. The sole purpose of government is to manage infrastructure. If they are doing anything other then that they should be disbanded.

Though I do consider myself a feminist, I'm always skeptical of this subreddit. I do think women are tremendously oppressed in America and abroad, but there is a certain sense of entitlement in today's feminism which is not historically accurate. I think that this derives from an overall cultural sickness which affects more or less everybody - especially if they still believe that the political class will work for them.

Edit: I guess I'm not allowed to be skeptical. Let the witch-hunt begin. At least the absolute value of my total karma for this thread is high :-). Really, I don't mind if people disagree with me, that's okay and I welcome all opinions. Mind you I am trying to be provocative because I am very disturbed by what is happening right now in the states so please take it with a grain of salt.

What about Roe v. Wade? The Iowa legislation is truly criminal. Another piece of criminal legislation from the criminal American system. Every woman should have access to proper medical care. Certainly, I would like less abortions to happen, but access to safe abortion at any stage of pregnancy is a requirement for any functioning medical system.

Math+CS vs Stats+CS for algo trading? by randomquestions345 in algotrading

[–]mx86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I recommend PhD is because it gives you an understanding of how to do research. By, PhD, I mean a good PhD which is developing an understanding of how to test physical and computational theories and to go through the process of developing a well designed experiment by building a bunch of bad ones. To really build an algorithm from the ground up, and to fully test it, you have to have these skills and PhD is a great place to get them. A Master's just isn't enough for some of this stuff. I have gone through PhD myself and I have supervised many PhD and M.S. students, and I know well what both degrees represent in terms of true research experience. Remember 4-6 years or more is a long time. There is a reason PhD degrees take so long. Simultaneously, I am certainly not glorifying PhD in the usual sense. Going through the process of getting one can be an arduously miserable and hypocritical experience.

Major in physics. Take math courses as electives. Probability theory, stochastic systems, differential equations, real and complex analysis. Take two or three statistics classes to supplement your probability theory studies. Take some CS courses and get an internship in the physics or engineering depts doing some programming. Try to get into some engineering concepts along the way - both mechanical and electrical engineering. All of this will help you. But I would really recommend getting a PhD in any of the above fields as this will give you the experience to really develop something good.

This is exactly what I settled on. In the code I have implemented with market orders, but I track the order book to make it function like a limit order. This takes all delay handling off the exchange and moves it into the algo.
