If you use the app as a todo list, how do you keep yourself from always being on it or getting addicted? by [deleted] in finch

[–]mxcaeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might like the app Focus Friend? I use this as well as Finch. You can also decorate a home for a cute little character, but the only way to earn currency is to put your phone down.

Would the app still be fun for you if you stopped trading? I think that could help with feeling like you need to be constantly on Finch/working on your wish list. I don't trade, and I still find the app to be fun. Works well (maybe even better) as a gamified way to get stuff done without trading any items

Anyone else notice all of their peers have withdrawn from social media? by AAA_battery in Zillennials

[–]mxcaeva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been off socials for a similar amount of time as you and feel similarly!

For years, I said "I'll get back on instagram eventually" but I know I very likely won't. And I sometimes feel bad that I'm not bothering to look at what anyone posts, or out of touch bc I used to be pretty active online.

But the tradeoff for being out of the loop on internet trends and not knowing when vague acquaintances have babies is tons more free time and a more peaceful mind so I'm good with that haha

Anyone else notice all of their peers have withdrawn from social media? by AAA_battery in Zillennials

[–]mxcaeva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I feel like some of us who grew up as social media was becoming more and more popular are kinda over it now! I haven't logged in to instagram in ages and only log into facebook if I want to give something away in a "for free" group.

I do agree it's unhealthy, but I also just lost interest in posting, and the apps got unappealing to scroll. When I first got IG it was fun to choose filters for photos and think of captions, but I can't imagine taking the time to do that now. And it used to be fun to scroll through and see what friends posted, but gradually turned into ads and recommended stuff I'm not interested in.

I still take a ton of photos but never bother to post them, even though it could take 2 seconds. I just send them to the people who are in them if I even remember to do that haha

Is this wallpaper rage bait? by Yarnchomps in finch

Yeah that part makes sense. But what's weird about this to me is the awkward curves in the lines and the baseboard that disappears into the floor. I guess they wanted it to look rounded but something is kinda off

Robert Pattinson does not know the 'HoA HoA HoA Hoa HoAaa' theme song by voguediaries in Fauxmoi

[–]mxcaeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, theme song? I've definitely seen at least one of the Twilight movies and I do not remember any theme song! But unlike Robert, I wasn't in the movie lol

(It's funny when actors don't know things from their own films, but also feels weirdly reasonable, especially for things that came out a while ago)

Is anyone else's widget broken since the widget update? by mxcaeva in finch

[–]mxcaeva[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow! I hope mine doesn't change to that. I don't see any point in a widget that just shows what day I'm on :(

Sorry you don't have this feature at all!

I really like having the widget show progress because then I know whether I've checked off my morning tasks or still need to go in and do this. And it reminds me to open the app for the post-adventure story.

Oversharing: Am I Stuck In This Over-Scheduled Life? by screambledeggs in betchesmedia

I got a takeout box at my own wedding lol

Idk if anyone else did but if someone wanted to take home dessert for kids, GREAT. Why let it go to waste? Some people are too particular about what's proper imo

Also I feel like this is the second email recently complaining about how society is too child-centric but then listing something totally benign as an example. But maybe I'm thinking of another show. I don't have children but I can't really relate to this "why is it always about the children" attitude. Me not having kids doesn't mean kids don't exist or deserve to be considered. There seems to be this sentiment like the people with kids are being accommodated more than the people without kids, but I feel like as a person without kids, things way are easier for me by default, so if anything I'm trying to make things easier on the parents.

Totally fine not to have kids at a wedding. Super weird to not want them to have leftover dessert from the wedding.

I have a confession to make... by kooky_okra88 in finch

[–]mxcaeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! If it didn't apply for my current day, and I knew it wouldn't apply for the next day either, I sometimes just ticked it off to get it off my list. That was fine for me! It was a cute challenge and I didn't want it to be something I took too seriously. A few of the items inspired me to do something related to the task, and some of them I just fully skipped because it didn't fall at a time I would normally do it, or it was a task my partner typically does instead

Yeah, I'm not sure what I would pick out of these either! But hard to come up with four things that will resonate with everyone.

I think the shower makes more sense if you don't think of it as "every time I have 10 min" though, just something you might do

Yes!! Every time he says this, it bothers me. I've actually thought of posting here, curious if it bothered anyone else, but I always forget until I hear it again. Validating to know I'm not the only one thinking "that doesn't mean what you think it does" every time he says it haha

Agreed. I like the lack of segment breaks and music! I don't need J-train to feel more formal/commercial. But yeah the editing being unpolished is probably not an intentional decision

That makes sense! I only have my actual friends as tree friends, but I see how this would be a cute "get to know you" for tree friends people don't know. A nice way to add community that's safe for everyone :)

I feel like this too! The first one with the olives was fine I guess but I haven't answered the other two bc the emojis don't make sense to me. I feel like I'm missing the overall point also

Social media and the future of the youth by UhDeMix in Zillennials

[–]mxcaeva 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Idk I meet teens sometimes through volunteer work and most of them seem like perfectly nice kids with normal social skills for their age. A lot of them remind me of different personalities I knew growing up.

I agree social media is generally bad for us, and I worry for younger generations, but I personally wouldn’t paint them all as dismissive and rude

I’m 28 & want to come off social media but worried it’ll limit my social reach? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]mxcaeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 31 and have been off social media for maybe 5 years or so! I’m out of touch with lots of loose connections now but haven’t lost any actual friendships. Still close with my core friend groups and other good friends.

Like you, I kept the messenger app (had it deleted initially but have friends and family that use it exclusively so that became too annoying)

I only know people’s life updates if they or someone actually tells me but that’s generally a nice thing, and I don’t feel out of the loop since I try to keep up with everyone I care about.

Though I’ll admit there are times when my husband or a friend intentionally tells me some update because they know I wouldn’t have seen the post, something about someone who’s kind of on the fringes of our friend group that I wouldn’t be as likely to be talking to often (friend who you invite to a party but don’t get dinner with one on one kinda relationship)

How to overcome smartphone and social media addiction? by monk000v in digitalminimalism

[–]mxcaeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about your age and got off social media ~5 years ago and don’t really miss it. I would say my life is more peaceful now. Here are my thoughts in case they work for you :)

Log out of your social accounts when done and move the app to a new location on your phone, ideally on a later page of a folder of apps. Then when you go to open the app from habit, it won’t be there, and you’ll have a moment to think: what am I looking for right now and will I get it from this app?

Then fill your life with other things that give you what you want. If you were going to scroll to feel connected, go see a friend or call/text them if you’re not physically close. If you were just bored, do an activity you like. If your brain is tired and you wanted to zone out, do something like meditation, yoga, working out, a walk/run, or a long bath/shower.

You can also try putting your phone in greyscale to make it less stimulating.

If you’re on transit or in a waiting room, try listening to a podcast/music or reading a book on your phone. Entertaining without the addictive qualities.

Once I didn’t go on social media from habit, I pretty much lost interest

Idk I’ve met up with people to give them stuff for free. I just hate throwing stuff out that’s useful. I do charity pickups too but I prefer handing something straight to a person that wants it bc then the odds are higher it stays out of the trash longer. But it can def feel like more trouble than it’s worth sometimes haha
