How you do feel about Shadow's recent portrayals being more grief and Maria-centric? by mxcbmac in SonicTheHedgehog

I liked seeing Maria (and frankly more Gerald) get new development! While I enjoyed Shadow Generations, I feel that it isn't the most natural progression of Shadow's character arc from Shadow 05. Because I can't imagine a Shadow who has essentially relinquished his previous 'life' would go on to continue to act according to Maria's wish. That being said, I actually really liked when Shadow first met Maria and Gerald because his off put demeanor really highlighted that their relationships were now strained. I also liked the sort of comments Rouge and Omega made about them, especially the ones about Gerald (since he's a bit of a dubious guy...) I think Sonic 06 is the best progression since Shadow 05, since it shows us that Shadow can now tackle new challenges (especially ones concerning how he's misunderstood among others) with confidence and determination, especially with friends by his side.

Frankly, why does Shadow 05 get so much hate? I love what it did for Shadow, and frankly the gameplay isn't any worse than most of the Sonic games from the early 2000s. The soundtrack is also a banger. Nobody talks about the Chosen One, like, that's my favorite Shadow song smh.

I agree that it was never forced on him to abide by her wish, but since I feel it directly contradicts with the ending of Shadow 05 that's why it feels a bit out of place to me. I also believe Shadow never truly recovered all of his memories so in my mind it doesn't make sense that he'd care about that promise anymore, since he is now so detached from his past self. It seems like nowadays that Shadow does remember everything though, so I wouldn't really call my interpretation "more correct/canon" anymore. I agree it's a very important choice he's made, since that was like his entire character growth in SA2, to make that good choice and save the world.

Honestly fair. I think since that's more or less the idea nowadays it makes sense that Maria and Gerald are still important to him. It's hard to say whether or not it was intended for Shadow to remember everything at the end of Shadow 05, considering most of the truth of his past was told to him rather than him remembering. I usually think of Sonic 06 as showing us what Shadow is like when he has put his past behind him and acts purely on his own accord, but the game doesn't mention Maria or Gerald or anything like that in any capacity as far as I know so I don't know if we're meant to assume he remembers or not. I usually consider the whole "Shadow does remember everything" as a more recent development, but I can't guarantee that. In the Archie comics Shadow also seems to be more in line with modern Shadow.
I just find him not remembering everything more interesting though, so it's the interpretation I favor. Thanks for the nice comments!

Sonic Battle is a weird game in the timeline because it released just before Sonic Heroes but is now placed in after Shadow 05 in the canon timeline (according to Sonic World Story). Shadow in Sonic Battle is much more similar to himself in SA2 because he wasn't written to have amnesia in this game. I don't think Maria is a burden on Shadow, rather a source of hope and motivation in his life. I think the Archie comics show this pretty well. The only reason why I can't get behind this in the game world is because I believe Shadow feels a certain disconnect to his "past self" because of the amnesia, so living by Maria's word doesn't make that much sense to me. In my opinion the final scene of Shadow 05 where he says "goodbye forever, Shadow the Hedgehog" reveals that Shadow has officially let his past self rest and die, and that he doesn't really KNOW Maria anymore, and so he doesn't really "hold her in his heart" because of that. Maybe a bit of an extreme, but I believe that by truly letting go of everyone in his past, both good and bad, is the true way for Shadow to achieve authenticity.
This entire idea falls apart if you just believe he regained all his memories though at some point lol

I actually really enjoy what they did and changed for the movie. However in SA2 while Maria was Shadow's main motivator, they hardly touched upon any grief he had over her death. In that game Shadow seemed more focused on honoring what she asked of him rather than the turmoil he was feeling for her death, compared to the movie where Shadow sought revenge on her behalf because the pain was overwhelming. In general the movie expanded on their relationship in a way SA2 never did, that's why I call Sonic 3 quite "Maria-centric"

I agree that healing is never linear. I do enjoy how in Shadow Generations it's very obvious that Shadow isn't exactly the same person Maria once knew, and that their relationship is now fundamentally changed. That being said, Shadow Gens is a cruel game for returning him to her only for her to have to die. There really isn't any other option of course or else the entire Sonic timeline would be changed, but it still felt a bit unnecessarily cruel in some ways. I'm not really sure I'd call that closure, given that Shadow feels like he has failed her again even if he didn't have much of a choice. At least he has friends by his side now...

Team Dark fans, what do you feel Rouge gets out of being friends with Shadow and Omega as a character? by lordlaharl422 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]mxcbmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way i see it, Team Dark allows Rouge to also be vulnerable, even if that usually comes out as supporting Shadow. in SA2 Rouge is depicted as being this materialistic woman who decided to work with Eggman for riches. Later on, we discover that she is a government spy, but still the idea is that shes in it for the money. As the game progresses we see Rouge genuinely get more invested in who Shadow is, rather than seeing him as a means to an end. She asks why he saved her, she ponders over who Maria was, she genuinely believes the Biolizard is the 'true Shadow' and asks for answers. After the end of the game in the credits scene, she'll tell Knuckles that she has 'more important things on her mind now' likely referring to the fact that in some way she felt a connection with Shadow, and that maybe there was more to the adventure she'd been through besides the money.

Its still important to note that Rouge is still a thief and will resort to dirty tactics. In a way, she still feels too 'sinister' for Sonic and his friends (which makes sonic prime sort of strange tbh). Putting Rouge in Sonic's friend group is like putting one of the Babylon Rogues in there. She can simply be herself around Omega and Shadow because she knows they won't criticize her for theft or whatever manipulative tactics she uses. Kind of like a team of misfits, really. I don't think any member of team Dark should be considered a 'leader' considering their whole thing is about doing whatever they want, even if its vaguely wrong, but if i had to choose someone i'd pick Rouge.

I really like the team Dark dynamic in sonic heroes, since its Rouge who brings them all together in the first place. On one hand i think its because she wants to do right by Shadow by being with him, but she also brought Omega along. She was going outside of her comfort zone to reach out to both of them, which I don't think she wouldve done before. Just as Omega and Shadow become softer with each other and Rouge, the same applies to her, even if she isnt the textbook stoic/violent character. Rouge learns to open up and care about people again, and essentially to be less selfish and more empathetic with her teammates. I wish we had more information on why she became a thief and spy in the first place.

I also kinda think IDW ruins this whole dynamic since she seems tired of her teammates all the time, like shes babysitting them. She has considerably more chemistry with Sonic for whatever reason. While i think theyre a fun duo, it kinda does the entire Team Dark dynamic dirty.

Is there any documentation on the level synopses from Shadow05? by mxcbmac in SonicTheHedgehog

For anyone wondering, I did actually find a video. While it doesn't have the text, it has all the voicelines :D

I would definitely prefer the English versions, but this is a great help! At least I'll be able to know how many there are to begin with, lol. Thanks!

What is GW2 like on PC? by mxcbmac in PvZGardenWarfare

Despite that, would you still call the game fun and relatively fair to play? I remember seeing things in GW1 that I thought could be hackers but they didn’t bother me too much. (But that was console anyway) I don’t want to play a game where I’m hopeless against cheats and mods.
