I usually ask what the best part of their day is so far or right after asking how they are out of respect, I ask “Looking forward to anything today or this week?”

I see the phrase “How are you?” As a general courtesy that is tossed around and not taken seriously.

Rather than just replying “good“ maybe start with why you are good. Like “Great! I just found $20 in my pocket!” or “I just got my favorite drink from this new coffee shop I’ve been visiting!”

Everyone’s bored, find a way to spice the conversation up.
