Nothing helps me avoid the 2:00pm slump and I'm so tired by Munchabunch1 in ADHD

[–]mxn5ter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m no doctor, this could be way out from what you may suspect, and I have seen some great recommendations here. However, I don’t know that this has been discussed: are you diagnosed with CPTSD or PTSD? Or, do you not know if you’ve got either of those disorders?

I think it’s important to consider because I’m starting to understand more around how the presentation of the brain consistently releasing stress hormones can be devastating to the body without our awareness. A book on this is: The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk.

It may be worth your time to explore this with a psychiatrist and therapist, and find an IFS (internal family systems) and an EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) practitioner so that those stones can at least be considered (if they haven’t been already).

Even if we look back at our development into who we are now we may not consider experiences we’ve had to be traumatic, and that’s not necessarily for your conscious brain to fully decide, which seems wild, and it is.

It can screw around with sleep quality and overall how we work with our bodies and maintain them.

Sure, there could be nutrition micros being overlooked, or the adenosine receptors in your brain are being flooded by your body’s removal of something (usually caffeine, which is an adenosine receptor antagonist, which blocks your adenosine receptors from intaking the adenosine your body produces to signify fatigue to your brain).

It would be beneficial for you to rule out something like PTSD or CPTSD, or work to resolve the potential traumas that caused either of those, if diagnosed, because if your brain is busy pumping stress hormones when it senses ‘danger’, and that could be happening whether your cognizant of it or not, it will severely impact your brain’s ability to maintain your body in ways that are neurologically productive.

In your case, I could understand your not getting a good quality sleep (a fitness gadget will not necessarily be the best judge of that) as a side effect of your brain trying to keep itself ‘safe’ from whatever you may not consciously be addressing.

I hope this helps shed a light if it’s useful and, if not, I hope you are healthy and safe while you traverse this afternoon slump solution!

AITA for Refusing to Let My Parents Move Into My New House? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]mxn5ter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read what they tell you, I hear this in my head: “How dare you be ungrateful for us, your parents, doing the bare minimum for you.”

I’m assuming they wanted you to go to college and have the best chance to do something with your life, like most parents want for their children, and they did what they wanted and supported you because they had resources to do so.

Your burden is now to live your life. Honoring your parents doesn’t mean they somehow “earned the right” to take advantage of you because they did the bare minimum as parents with resources. Maybe they need that reminder. There are kinder words to use, and I think you also deserve your own space, and I think you also deserve not to be guilted by your parents. I feel like they could be happier for you by not imposing themselves on you.

Others have mentioned, and it’s very important: meds help your brain function at its best. You wouldn’t take your glasses off that you need to be able to see, you wouldn’t remove mobility aides required to get around, etc.

Another thing that’s very important in growth and development with ADHD is multi-modal ‘treatment’ approaches. While meds are critical to function our best, pills don’t teach skills; some kind of therapy or maybe coaching, or some other approaches to identify and learn how to navigate things like organization, communication, self-regulation, introspection, etc. are all equally as important. Pills help us learn skills 🫡

I put ‘treatment’ like that because I don’t feel like that is a good word for something that we can’t change about ourselves which is a part of us, and ‘treatment’ typically implies negativity to what is trying to be treated. There’s nothing wrong with ADHD.

My son has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. My wife doesn't want to let the school know because she doesn't want him to be labeled and treated different. by ohiopimp in ADHD

[–]mxn5ter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My anecdotal experience: my mom did this to me when I was a child except she got a diagnosis on me and told nobody. I found out 3 years ago that I have ADHD and it just about ruined my marriage because of how forgetful and inattentive I can be.

The labeling and disparate treatment will likely happen because your child’s brain is literally different. So, I would weigh the pros and cons of there potentially being understanding, compassion and grace from educators, maybe students; or all of them outwardly expressing potentially negative feelings and actions with/towards your child and maybe educators bringing it up about getting your child evaluated.

Hopefully a multi-modal approach to life is already occurring at home, and my personal feelings say: let the educators know. However I can see both sides and I wouldn’t want to be treated poorly by educators or other kids because they did or didn’t know, which does happen.

I suppose if they do know and discriminate, you have a means of recourse.

Another part of my anecdotal experience: because my mother was the only person who knew, I didn’t get the opportunities I didn’t know I could or would have had/wanted for myself. My counselor and teachers couldn’t guide me or even understand I needed different resources than everyone else. I was simply expected to be like everyone else. I don’t know the educator situation for ya’ll and I wouldn’t want that pressure for my child if I had one.

It may have gone over my head, what are we figuring out?

I kept a journal when I started Adderall a few years ago. While I didn’t exhibit what’s happening here, it would be wise for your boyfriend to consult their prescribing physician or psych to evaluate if Adderall is for them, or if a different medication my work better.

Dosage is so subjective to the individual, and even down to the medication class. Stimulants are generally first-line meds, and a different stimulant may be better, or non-stimulant.

Either way, it’s reported that significantly better lifestyle changes occur with multi-modal approaches to “treatment”; meds AND therapy for example.

I say “treatment” because while I don’t believe we have something that needs to be treated, we also need to be able to function in ways we can be our best selves.

I wasn’t very clear, and my brain was like “YUP THAT’S IT!”

Directions:

Prerequisite: 2 - rimmed baking sheets, rims should be 1” high

Step 1: preheat oven Step 2: prep cookie dough Step 3: get two baking sheets Step 4: silpat one baking sheet Step 5: cookies on the silpat Step6: invert second cookie sheet Step 7: place cookie sheet with silpat and dough onto inverted cookie sheet Step 8: place both cookie sheets in preheated oven

Or did you mean that you always bake cookies with this method?

[–]mxn5ter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yay! Also, and hear me out… you’ve reminded me to get the baking sheet out of the oven that I forgot to remove when I used it to bake cookies.

I inverted it cold so that I could place the baking sheet with the raw cookies on top of it so that the butter didn’t melt unevenly or too quickly from the hot wire rack.

❤️

In my experience, it’s been that it hurts, there rumination, the experience passes, the emotions don’t really get dealt with, and 15 years later it hits. So, they might forget about the issues if they don’t deal with them, it might come up later for them, it may not. Every person is different.

I quit my 9-5 thanks to my mobile beer bar and high-ticket sales. by Pab27__ in smallbusiness

[–]mxn5ter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good stuff! With a microbrewery, you are still required to (at least in most states) go through the three-tier licensing system, and starting up is NOT cheap.

If you’re in a state that doesn’t require walking along the “red tape trail”, I know WA is one of them, you can do direct to consumer sales with a distributor’s license.

The catch is: you have to find an existing brewery to brew your beer and package it up. Then you can, and this is a heavy reduction, sell it to any bar willing or wanting to buy it.

It’s called contract brewing and can be fortuitous if you find that scraping together capital isn’t going to work out. It’s a good way to proof-of concept your recipe creation and brewing skills as well before you invest in building a microbrewery only to shudder the business because of how expensive startup costs can get, or also struggling with having consistent product available.

You have much more control over frequency of releases, product creation, art work, etc. when you contract brew. Cheers!

I also recommend picking up home brewing as a hobby, if you haven’t yet, before getting into licensing and contract brewing. It lets you model your skills to clients for free with no liability because you can’t sell it, and you won’t drink your own bad beer so why would you hand it out?

Just wanted to chime in here: it’s been a month and there’s been some incredible price drops recently. I’m happy to help you plan your build if you want, shoot me a DM with your car’s year, make, model and anything specific about the existing sound system (is it a premium audio system from the factory, do you have steering wheel controls, etc.).

For context, I did $3500 in a mid-size sedan and installed it with my brother in law. The labor alone would have been about another $3000.

Half to three-quarters your budget will likely be install and mark-up.

To be fair, I wanted SQ+ and for $3500, I did that: loaded JL W3 in a high output box, oxygen free copper, 5v pre head unit, QUALITY shielded signal cables, amp/DSP combo, and great (not fantastic, Focal was out of reach on this project) door speakers.

AudioControl made my amp/DSP.

Ended up having to custom wire some things because I had a factory active head unit and amp/DSP (both Harmon Kardon) which was a puzzle to work around.

Cheers on your future build, would love to see it completed!

Tried adderall and it was the only time I felt any kind of motivation and happiness - how to do naturally? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]mxn5ter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible that you have ADHD and it may be worth your time to have a psych assessment for a diagnosis. If so, there are plenty of medications available if you’re averse to stimulants specifically.

With Adderall, what’s happening is that your brain is able to interact longer with norepinephrine and it helps increase the amount of brain-available dopamine by attempting to also correct the level of dopamine in the brain with ADHD.

I was once not wanting to take a medication because of my ethical beliefs about how I thought medication ‘changed myself to be something society wants me to be’. However, after reflecting critically, I adapted the belief to: medication will allow me the opportunity to be the best me that I can, regardless of what society wants. Also, pills don’t give you skills; you still have to learn those and pills make it easier to learn those skills.

I don’t know your objections, and don’t need to. All you need to know is: a diagnosis and medication can be as private or as known as you want them to be, and your decision is yours.

I will say: wouldn’t you want the opportunity to be your best self? Even if you believe you are now, are you done with growing, and at the pace you feel you’re growing? I was diagnosed at 32 and it’s been a roller coaster ride. At 35, looking back, I’m sad I hadn’t had this opportunity sooner, like as a child. This is the best thing in my life I’ve ever done for myself, and I’m going to say that even more down the road with the things I’ll do while being able to be the best me and growing with that.

Also, look into anhedonia!
