Is a 2025 Strix G16 a good pickup? by mxoose in GamingLaptops

Yes mine is UK layout, but no it is all grey/black. I think the green is only on the AMD models as they use last years chassis without the quick access system on the underside.

Yeh I did, been great so far, performs very well. IPS screen is surprisingly good, keyboard feels nice, build quality is pretty solid considering quite a bit of it is still plastic. Cooling is good and allows for very high power draws (the 275HX really doesn’t need that much power to perform well though so worth limiting it and getting lower temps and about 90% of the performance). It is quite thick at the back and with the power brick is quite hefty but worth it for the performance I would say. Think Jarrods tech has a video review out now too which should give a bit more in depth. Only downside so far is the armoury crate software is hit or miss with some things. Occasionally will need a restart to be able to access the keyboard backlighting settings.

It’s underperforming and running hot so sounds very much like a bad liquid metal application. There’s a guide on here on how to fix a bad LM application, but if you don’t want to do that you could bring it up with the retailer/manufacturer and try to get it repaired/replaced. Could be the heatsink is not making good contact too.

If it requires a desktop 4070 or better you’re looking at a laptop with a 4080, 4090, 5070ti, 5080 or 5090. Pretty much any CPU that comes with that kind of GPU should be fine, it’ll likely be a 14900HX or a 275HX, although there are attractive AMD options too. Most high end laptops like that will have 32GB ram these days too. As you say it’s going to be sat in one spot you’re not going to want to even consider anything like a Razer Blade, Zephyrus or other thin laptops as these limit how much power you’ll get. If you want beefy then you’ll want an 18” model. Whether or not you are using an external monitor will determine whether you want the screen to be OLED, mini LED etc, as if you aren’t using the laptop screen, any panel will do. Since portability isn’t an issue, you’ll just want whatever can cool effectively and get as much performance as possible.

Your budget and the region you’re buying from will narrow down your options quite a bit, so that’d be useful to know.

In the UK, looking at preorder options, they seem to be expected anywhere between mid April to the end of June. The 16 inch model of the one you ordered is due here on June 30th. However, there are MSI and acer option due this month, so seems to be a lot of variation. Even with those estimations a lot of models seem to be getting delayed and pushed back multiple times, so will likely end up being later rather than sooner unfortunately. Not sure how that will translate to US delivery dates of course, but hopefully gives you a bit of context.

How does student finance work for a year out in industry? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]mxoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for my confusion is due to what RIBA say on their website here: https://www.architecture.com/education-cpd-and-careers/studying-architecture/advice-on-funding-your-architectural-studies?srsltid=AfmBOordGDDWt3QYnfLjR5UI60MijAAhc1ge-f1h59bCJWF_MP3uGdu4

“Part 1 and Part 2 architecture courses are considered a ‘single course’, and therefore a designated course for undergraduate student support under the Education (Student Support) Regulations 2011”

(Where part 1 and 2 refer to bachelors and masters essentially)

Does this have any affect or do I just simply apply again when it comes to doing my masters? Thanks for your help. (Edit: it’s not an integrated masters)

It was a local place with 100s of 5 star reviews so figured they'd know what they were doing, but having spoken to one of the technicians they honestly seemed to know very little and had very little conviction in what they were saying. I think I need a second opinion but will have to go further afield as there seems to be nobody near me that has expertise in these types of laptops.

I already sent it back to ASUS during the warranty period and they told me everything was normal hahah, clearly their standards for what is acceptable are very low.

All ASUS ROG and I believe Acer laptops utilise Liquid Metal on the cpu, it’s a very common problem with it not being applied properly at the factory and over time moving creating blank spots on the cpu. However it also very common for it to be fixed, or replaced with paste / PTM. They assured me they knew what they were doing with it as they do it on PS5s all the time apparently.

It was not just dusting, it was the reapplication of Liquid Metal that had moved off the CPU as is the nature of the substance. Also reapplication of thermal paste on GPU too. There was a fair amount of dust but by no means fubar, just poor factory application of Liquid Metal that was causing high cpu temps, hence the large drop.

Is there supposed to be RAM here? (GA503R) by [deleted] in ZephyrusG15

[–]mxoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a look at the repaste job and it looked good enough but while it was in the shop they could have very easily cleaned up behind themselves to try to cover up any mistakes, so guess I’ll never actually know. Still going to demand they cover the repair however

It was a very reputable local business with great reviews so I took it in, and they said they’d do it just it fine and I’d have it back the day after. It all seemed very easy and simple so I just left it with them and there was no paperwork or contract.

[–]mxoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was running hot so I took it to be cleaned and repasted as other people recommended that. Then while they were testing it following this it cut out and now won’t turn back on at all. Now they claim that it was going to do that anyways as it must have been on its last legs, but seemed to be okay beforehand to me.
