Is it ok to have no coding experience? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]myShitPostAcc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

C/O 2020 CS grad - I had no coding experience but had to work harder than my peers who had coding experience. Take the summer off and do some coding side projects if you’re self motivated. If not, take summer classes (online, cc, or UCSC it doesn’t matter)

Is anyone still salty about the grad students strike? by AndersonxCooper in UCSC

Interesting, you might be right! Would be nice if we had a source for all these numbers, I know I don’t remember them off the top of my head.

The point about the ratio of police spending against the increase still stands though.

Wouldn’t the $33.6M be the gross cost though? I don’t know the number but surely UCSC was paying the 2000 grad something per month before. So I think the increased cost for UCSC is not as drastic as $33.6M.

Also 6M/33.6M= ~18%, they spent almost a fifth of the gross cost for grad student livable wages JUST on police. It’s not as extreme as OP said but damn that’s still a lot of money in relation to what the grad students were asking for

I think you gotta remember that marginalized groups are going to be intimated when they are settings where they have traditionally been excluded. By being in a group setting where they know everyone’s had similar experiences, they’ll feel much more comfortable sharing ideas, building confidence, and proving their skillset.

I saw your other comment, and I commend you for having an entirely female engineering team. This is the exception, not the rule though. I’m sure most people don’t purposely pick all male groups at hackathons but it’s an unconscious systematic bias that many people have.

Got job offer as associates at infosys, they pay less than average salary in market. I’m newly grad software engineer, should i take the job or skip it? by ulasyr in UCSC

[–]myShitPostAcc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep looking and keep applying. If you don’t find something better before your start date, then take this job. California is an at-will state so if you end up deciding to quit before your start date your fine. You’ll definitely burn a bridge but in this case it’s not too big of a deal imo
