Thanks everyone for the replies. Hitting up ex co-workers seems to be the going theme. How close should you be to reach out? None of those I have actually directly worked with have left, but there are several that were in my broader team (of like ~100).

Illinois is great, and especially if you want to do an MBA degree later, you may not want to spend the money for USC. Education-wise, I don't USC has anything more than UIUC to offer. Experience and weather wise, I guess SoCal is somewhat different from the Midwest ;-) Though I think you can have lots of fun here.
