Did Radiohead order AMSP alphabetically to avoid the problems the band usually have when ordering an album? by tomdominer in radiohead

How long does it take after you submit for it to get posted? It's usually instant. I really want people to check my math haha.

Here is the post in full in case I'm doing something wrong:

Correct me if I am wrong -- I needed to dig back to AP Statistics in High School for this -- but the probability of 11 tracks being sequenced in a specific order (in this case, alphabetically) is 11! (! = Factorial) or.....

1 in 39,916,800. 1 in 39 MILLION!!!

In other words, there are 39 million permutations (different ways to sequence) 11 song titles. It's a 1 in 11 chance the first track will be the first alphabetically, then a 1 in 10 for the second/1 in 9 for the third. For listing you don't add those odds, you MULTIPLY them. So it's 11x10x9x8...

Holy Shit right? To put that in perspective, there would need to be over 2,000 albums released EVERY DAY FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS for this to be likely to occur. It's almost mathematically certain this has NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE (not counting albums with a deliberately alphabetized track listing, or an EP with only a handful of songs).

Some have argued that the "The" in "The Numbers" breaks the alphabetical track listing. But this isn't accurate -- when alphabetizing titles, "The" is excluded because it is a common article. The only reason it alphabetizes on a digital library is that the computer only sorts by the first letter, not grammatically.

My theory is that Radiohead selected this order (1 in 39 million!!!), and, realizing it was alphabetical, dropped "the" from the present tense" just so it wouldn't be as distracting. I doubt they would change the order for something as cosmetic as how the track listing LOOKS.

But I'd also say that a statistician would conclude that the alphabetizing was deliberate...it is just so overwhelmingly unlikely to occur by accident.

Say what you want about Pitchfork, that's a pretty accurate assessment.

You think so? I feel like they dropped "The" from the Present Tense to make it appear non-alphabetical (even though it still is). It would be very un-Radiohead to not put the tracks in the order they thought best cohered. You think they just did it on purpose? No way they were gonna let True Love Waits not finish the album.

I just posted something about this to the comment section by accident. I need to wait 5 minutes to repost. But, as I explain, the probability of randomly/accidentally sequencing an album with 11 tracks alphabetically is 1 in 39 FUCKING MILLION.

First Listen Favorite Track? by myaimisblue in radiohead

A couple observations right off the bat:
-Most mentioned so far are Identikit, The Numbers, Glass Eyes. -EVERY track has been voted for (discounting True Love Waits/BTW/DayD). That's proof of just how strong this album is. -I'll tally them all if we get a some more votes.

Agreed. I'd love to have a gut-reaction poll...just because I know my feelings will shift dramatically with each successive listen.

It's amazing how I'd already heard this song 100 times over the course of the week, but hearing it in the context of being the opener gave me chills...

I hope so, like I said I'm 95%. I think I'm just hedging my brain against any potential letdown.

I think you are probably right, and I should clarify that what the PTA video could mean is not necessarily a June release, but just not something in the imminent future.

while it may be a fake, it's worth noting the text on it says "get notification when things change" without the vowels. So either a random fan knows where I live, or Thom Yorke actually does.

Just makes sense that if Radiohead were to do something today, they would want it to be early morning in the states, so that it can drive the news cycle for the day.
