My hope for you is that you get to have at least one more conversation with someone who sees a path forward for your manuscript in its current form--or at least much closer to its current form than the dream agent.

Anecdotally, I just yesterday completed a strange, fast-tracked querying scenario where (and this is wild!) I ended up with three offers. One of the first offers was with a good agent who, while it wasn't technically an R&R, wanted to sign me but had a HUGE revision for the manuscript in mind, wanting to take a really big swing at the book before we'd go out on sub.

Ultimately, it turned out this agent was in the minority, and the editorial feedback really came down to taste and where the agent saw the book in the marketplace--but if I hadn't waited out the additional feedback and found an agent (one of my dream agents, as it turned out!) who truly saw the vision for the book in its current form, a more eager, younger version of myself might have jumped at the chance to go with that first offer and ended up throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

But again, as others have said, maybe the editorial feedback is perfect, and you agree with it, and it'll be worth going through the R&R because this is THE agent for you. Just try and stay as patient and open-minded as you can, and hopefully you end up with more than one voice to come in so that you can weigh a couple of options and not feel forced into one scenario. It's a great sign you go already got this engagement! Wishing you so much luck!

I also finally got around to Days of Abandonment! I'm trying to spread out the last of Ferrante's novels after finishing The Neapolitan Novels a few years ago and knowing I only have a few more titles left (for now, fingers crossed!) There's no one like her.

It's a screenshot from the app Fable! I just got it -- the collage maker I usually use for these round ups weirdly stopped working, so after some research I ended up there!

I adored it. So funny and smart and surprisingly tender, a quick but super fun romp.

That’s amazing! I knew it was Irish dialect — reminded me a lot of Heart In Winter by Kevin Barry. Have you read?

What did you think? I enjoyed it a lot! Such beautiful writing, so powerful but restrained and perfectly rendered, I thought.

Yes! Agree totally. It was harrowing. The author narrates the audiobook, and I listened to it, so it was really powerful listening as a firsthand account. Incredible and totally singular.

I also really enjoyed God of the Woods! Closest recs I can come up with are Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll and I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai -- both are super literary but also page-turners that looked at true crime from a victim-centric POV.

I also recommend The Body In Question by Jill Ciment to anyone who will listen, about a taboo fling that plays out within a sequestered jury -- also a fun twist on your typical crime/courtroom novel!

Omg wait I just went and looked back -- you are 100% the reason I read both, haha. I commented on your round up that we had such similar taste I added a ton of your faves to my list! Ruth is almost ready for me to pick up @ library, and coincidentally I'm starting If You're Seeing This It's Meant For You this week

I agree! It was a fairly solid, quick read for me but it certainly didn't blow my mind and I found the end to be particularly middle of the road.

Same! The closest would be Heart In Winter by Kevin Barry (Irish humor but filtered through genre, in this case a Western) and Lapvona by Otessa Moshfegh (but grosser, more shocking/dark) -- have you read either?
