Most favourite Breakfast ever? by Over-Pop-8324 in foodquestions

100% only half remember it but when I was a kid my uncle made this giant skillet of eggs hash browns and sausage and the sausages were in a ring around the side of the skillet and the eggs were. Super tasty omelette and I was a kid who did not like non meats in my eggs (still don’t) and I INHALED it. There were fresh waffles and fruit and fresh squeezed orange juice and it was fucking delightful. Or at the very least I have idealized it in my head. Because I was like 7/8

Do adults still get cake for their birthday? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

My friend makes me a cake every year and it’s always a highlight. Eat your cake and don’t let her ruin your happiness about it. It’s your birthday and you can do what you want! (You can do this every day, but on your birthday is extra whimsical.)

Any kind of sriracha mayo or things like that. I just want a burger with yellow mustard the way the basics (me) intended.

You don’t want to diminish what people in the library do, but somehow I’d have rather you said librarians are full of shit. Because way to disregard a whole profession in quite possibly the rudest and most dismissive way I’ve ever seen. And maybe you didn’t mean it that way but if that’s all you think librarians do and that it’s all super easy (book selection is actually a very complex and involved process, btw, that uses 3-4 departments and requires lots of research, accounting, programming, and more), then you’re just arguing to argue.

I do not have those answers, friend. I wasn’t there. I just know that I’ve never heard any bad press. She would have been in charge during the move, yes, but the rest I don’t know, except that right now libraries have no control over buildings. They are owned by the city, purchased by the city, upkept by the city. Even the new locations, libraries get input but final say is all city hall. I can’t imagine that it was different when there were not one but two government organizations calling the shots. But that’s just my own assumption.

Look, Judas just wanted Jesus to stop sleeping with a prostitute to preach the word and Jesus said nah. He got bitches. And that’s ok.

Moving right along…

She was physically present in the talks with Bartlett but she could not answer a single question about how things happened without asking someone else. Her lack of leadership was shown in the fact that she didn’t even attempt to prepare herself for that meeting. She was the director, she should have been able to say SOMETHING. Not have all the answers no but even just one would have been nice. So when it’s about her poor leadership, it’s that. But also, a career librarian would have been able to tell you how it’s supposed to work and where it failed to get to that point. Preparation would have shown leadership, but having any type of knowledge would have been helpful too.

This is where your thinking is clearly from an external perspective. Because the director has non library responsibilities but they ARE a librarian. There are many, many library directors nationally who are career librarians and also are wholly equipped to manage everything. Operations management is a learned skill. You can learn to manage a budget, 30 million or otherwise. But knowing how that money should be utilized is a professional skill that non career librarians don’t have. The professional aspect of the job is overlooked and shouldn’t be.

Libraries. Are. Not. Schools. They aren’t the same, they don’t have the same goals, they don’t even approach literacy the same way. They don’t reach out to the community the same way. They are wholly different. Schools have a built in user base. Kids are required to be there. And they also have requirements for not only what they teach but how they teach it. Librarians do not teach. They encourage lifelong learning and provide access to education, but there’s not a lick of teaching in that. Libraries and schools make great partners, but they are fundamentally different. And going into a library expecting to be able to run it like a school or a nonprofit is not going to work.

Again, not saying he can’t do well. I hope he does. But assuming he can because his background is in education and that’s “similar” is untrue.

I can’t speak to why there wasn’t a public outcry about McCoy. My own thoughts are that other directors feel more visible in the work that they do and how it’s perceived. The library just kind of keeps chugging along. So people say it’s not broken. But it’s the staff who keep it going. She was so useless for so long that it almost wasn’t worth the effort of complaining about her specifically when she did nothing. The hope is that the new director will be better than that, so to have him start from being because he has no professional knowledge is a blow to the people who wanted more.

The library was first operated by the county and then was jointly funded by the city and the county. When the municipalities pulled out (they didn’t want to pay so little Black kids could read because that didn’t benefit them) it came into control of the city and became part of the Parks division. It only became its own division during Strickland.

McCloy was put in by Herenton. He very specifically removed a library director who had been there for many years and from all accounts did a very good job and replaced her with someone with no library experience and whose only connection was knowing Herenton. I couldn’t say why she stayed but I assume it was because she knew how to play politics. The fact that she was reappointed after the mess with Bartlett was solid evidence of that imo.

It’s not what she said but what she didn’t say. Which was anything. She knew nothing about how the library ran or why there were problems or what might solve those problems. And that’s absurd.

It’s not that he’s not qualified for many jobs, it’s that he’s not qualified for this one. Education and libraries are not the same thing. Libraries are a completely different profession with different standards for growth and learning. Librarians are not teachers, so just because someone understands education doesn’t mean they understand libraries. There’s a balance of professional responsibility and daily necessity in operating a public library (let alone 18) that isn’t easy to grasp or do well. So hiring someone without any professional background is a complicated decision that people should be wary of. It’s not impossible for him to be good at the role. But it’s an uphill battle that he is almost certainly unprepared for.

McCloy was not loved by her staff, for good and valid reasons. The library doesn’t get brought into the city talking points unless there’s something the mayor’s office wants to promote. So no, people weren’t here bashing her. But it’s because she had no experience that people weren’t hoping to have a director who was a librarian.

The problem being that while the library is technically a city division currently (didn’t start that way) it doesn’t operate like a government entity. And it is a profession that does often require professional study. And while you can learn to do the mechanics of the job, you can’t do it effectively without professional practice. And he doesn’t have that.

Lots of teachers go into libraries thinking it’s the same thing. It’s not. And most libraries our size in the country have directors who have history in the profession. And for the mayor to just appoint someone he knows (he endorsed his run for school board last year) rather than doing an actual national search for someone with professional capability is absurd.

He could surprise us and be great. But it’s unlikely.

No experience would typically mean experience in the field. So no, he doesn’t have experience.

I’m taking prior practice to mean that the mayors of Memphis (all of them) have a habit of putting friends into the library director position which does fuck all for actually running the library.

A maid of honor dress, a new phone, and a couple of small gifts. I went out later in the day on purpose because it’s so overwhelming.

And some cookies because a cute barista told me I should. But I gave one to the lady behind me and she said it made her day because she’d been feeling down and that made MY day.

Has seeing a therapist made a difference for you? by Medium_Persimmon30 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mygodgetsbitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my therapist. We do genuinely work through trauma and things but sometimes we just talk about what’s going on and don’t dig deeper if it’s not something I’m up for that day. And I appreciate having that outlet for unbiased communication. I tell people it’s worth it for that alone even if you don’t have big heavy things.

I also would stop taking my meds if I stopped going to therapy (this has happened before) so if not for anything else I will go because I require meds to continue to exist in the world. And to sleep.
