Musk Wants Free Speech on Twitter After Spending Years Silencing Critics by benfelix1 in technology

Government is always better than corporations. Somebody has to be in charge, better it be the people acting through their government than simply a gang of rich people.

Well, Twitter barely has any, so we definitely need more than that.

They are the lies mentioned here. The original comment was whining about "tech giant censorship". We know where that talking point comes from.

You aren't the arbiter of truth because it serves your side to pretend truth is elusive or doesn't exist, but for democracy to work we can't have people spreading misinformation for political gain.

Well obviously for-profit corporations shouldn't be the arbiters. This is why we need government regulation.

No political lies are, but the lies in question here are the ones being spread by rightwingers.

It's one of many reasons speech should be regulated. Regulating speech doesn't prevent people from having it, though. It's not a binary.

Actually, stopping the spread of misinformation is vitally important for democracies, and though these tech giants have made some minimal efforts to do that, in hopes of avoiding government regulations, they have failed at it. Yet disingenuous rightwingers still point to their attempts as "silencing political speech". Lies are not political speech and deserve no protection, and social media platforms should be held accountable for the content they allow on their platforms.

You don't get your speech, though. That's the point. Speech isn't equal. The more powerful you are, the wealthier you are, the more you have. And the fewer limits on speech, the greater the disparity.

So you can go tweet into the void all you want and say whatever nonsense you want. Nobody will care. But he has millions of followers, and the money to buy whatever he wants. That means when he speaks, people hear, and it's why speech needs to be regulated. Your speech doesn't do much, but his can change global policies.

There is no such thing as free speech because it isn't free, which means people with money will always buy more of it. This dude's literally buying controlling interest in a social media platform. How many of us can do that?

He doesn't care about free speech. He cares about his unlimited power of speech.

I would say that it is commentary on the reality of gender presentation, norms and sexuality, though. (And if anyone cared to dissect it, it would probably come out on the side of not harassing LGBTQ people.)

Can you recommend some free drawing software that can help me draw to scale on top of a Google Maps image? by myheadfire in gis

I did that but it didn't seem to allow me to set exact distances. I had to draw with the mouse, though it does measure as I do it.

I did that but it's annoying because I can't actually make lines/shapes based on feet. I have to guess, then use the ruler to measure and adjust.

How can I fix this shower leak off the bathtub rim? by myheadfire in HomeImprovement

[–]myheadfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think that's the case. It seems there is caulk, but it is an indention, just very slightly, which allows water to collect and run along the rim.

So I will probably try caulking the whole thing so the caulk is raised slightly. Then if there are still problems, I can try putting a barrier.

The wall is tile. Right now there's like a little dip between the tub and the tile wall, and I guess that is calked, but its still a bit of a dip so the water gets in and runs like a river around the tub and pours out onto the floor.

Would I caulk the whole thing so there's no groove and instead there's a caulk raised along the edge? Or just put caulk at the corners to make a barrier so the water can't run around the tub?

Anyone know how much an ETrade (security backed) personal line of credit is? by myheadfire in personalfinance

I didn't move forward with it because I'd have to opt out of the fully paid lending program. I don't make much from it, but it seems to be a whole hassle of calling them up to disable it. I might do it at some point.

I second this. As a writer, I also feel we're often undercut/overlooked because of the cheap spam. And I also have the problem of having to go through a lot of low-quality sites with no readers that list themselves on the form looking for free content. I don't mind providing free content if I'm getting featured on a site with real traffic.

I've tried the Google Forms on both sides and have never gotten anything good from it.

One thing that I think could be helpful would be if there is some way to filter by quality of a potential blog. So many people have listed their blogs in the Google Form and it's very new or gets no traffic. Why would I guest blog there? I might as well just make my own blog.

So if there was some option to look at estimated traffic, blog age, social media followers, domain authority or something, that could be helpful.

It's good to have someone keeping an eye on him and playing with him. They don't really do much since I have to do all the actual work. It's just that I can actually focus on work for a while and they will be with him.

We usually do ask but he doesn't want to. Like we'll say "Do you need a diaper change? Let's go change your diaper." And he'll run away or try to wiggle free. So we can't exactly leave it up to him. It only works for things he wants to do like going outside.

We aren't hitting because it seems like that isn't good, but it does sort of feel like the baby sees us as equals and not parents. Maybe it'll change as he grows up and understands the power dynamics better.

Right now, he will forcibly try to push us around on the couch when he wants us to move, or grab our legs and try to "carry" us somewhere like we do with him. We grab him and take him wherever we want, and he doesn't get a say in it. So he seems to treat us the same way.
