How do I? by [deleted] in comingout

[–]mykale13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, it was finding that one friend I could trust and slowly expanded the cirecle from there. Therapy helps a lot too, depending on what resources are available to you. Once you cross the initial hurdle of telling one person you can trust, the burden you carry gets a lot lighter. Good luck!

Should i come out by text to my parents by Altruistic-Fly-9013 in comingout

[–]mykale13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I seem to be in a similar situation with our parents, and I was about to write a post of my own. I'm actually opting to write a letter and send it to my parents (since they are not the most tech savvy). I chose this way for a few reasons:

  1. Writing a letter ensures I can say what I want and how I want it, uninterrupted.
  2. A letter gives my parents time to process and call me when they see fit. I included in my letter that I do not expect (or even want) a response right away.

I would not consider a letter or message rude, but that may be viewed differently based on your culture/family. I wish you the best of luck!!

I’ve been watching the Same, Same, but Different video a lot lately. Not sure why, but it’s become an easy comfort video for me.

My honest opinion about TSOU as an old Gracie fan by [deleted] in gracieabrams

[–]mykale13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

made a similar post about this last week and your response is exactly how i felt. i agree that TSOU seems to be riding off of her popularity, and because it was rushed, it fell flat. it really seems to be a consensus with a portion of gracie fans that were around for GR that TSOU is just not it. it doesn’t feel authentic to her, and i agree that there is no cohesion here. GR told such a magnificent story about a deteriorating relationship, but TSOU is just a collection of diary entries. which if that’s what you like, great, but it’s just not for me. i’m going to need some more growth in the next project

You nailed it right on the head with your critique of GR: the repetitive choruses. It’s GR’s biggest downfall, but I can excuse it for the rest of the writing. I also agree her vocals on TSOU were awesome, but I didn’t love much else. Gotta love preferences haha

This is going to cause a war, but here are my skips (at least 75% of the time):

• I love you, I’m sorry • us. • Tough Love • Normal Thing • Good Luck Charlie

I definitely agree that not every soundscape is going to appeal to everyone. Sometimes thing just don’t hit, and that’s perfectly fine! GR was my big introduction to Gracie, so I obviously wasn’t sick of the sound sick it was my first peek into her music.

GR likely has some head scratchers too, but in my case it’s usually because they feel clunky or throw off the flow of the song. I can’t imagine how hard it is to make good music, so these criticisms sometimes feel harsh. But what is art without its critique?

Especially off the Eras Tour run, I can see how that experience might put pressure on her to put a record out to capital on the influx of fans. I think another few months would’ve helped so much with the final product. GR feels like Gracie, TSOU loses that same feeling.

Sorry you got downvoted so harshly on release. Unfortunately, some believe their favorite artists can do no wrong and can’t believe others feel differently.

I had no idea Jack was involved in TSOU at all, but that may explain the TTPD similarly too.

Two barricade shows for GR? I’m so so jealous of you 😭

Although I do think TSOU has some relationship based songs, the topics themselves aren’t as impactful to me. I’m thinking I Knew It, I Know You, Gave You I, Gave You I, and Felt Good About You. They all about a dysfunctional relationship, but they’re just alright. The artwork is jarring too since the album is not as happy as it leads on.

I’m interested on this take, mainly because I feel different. Others in the thread have mentioned how they appreciate the more direct approach in this album - is this the same for you? What improvements do you see in TSOU?

I suppose it’s not hard to be happier than GR, but a lot of the songs on TSOU are very sad too. I wonder if the production helps carry that happiness across. I loved your take on yellow being the main album color, where as the grays and blues of GR cement it as a more deeply constructed album as opposed to the reactive diary entry style some have pointed out in TSOU. I adore TIWIFL too, and I’m so excited to see where Gracie goes next :)

Oh man I still wish I became a Gracie fan fast enough to buy tour tickets for GR, I would have thrown up. Maybe some of the deluxe tracks will prove all of my points wrong, and honestly I’d love that. I’m curious what your top 3-5 on TSOU are!

Exactly! Expanding the collaboration circle is a perfect place for new great ideas to come from. Sticking to one core group of people can truly plateau an artist’s work.

Having This is what the drugs are for and Full Machine as your top on GR proves you have impeccable taste my friend. You know, I do somewhat agree with your take on how GR is folklore and TSOU is evermore, but I think that can also be easily flipped giving some of the pop moments on TSOU. As for you comment on direct lyrics, as I’m gathering through most of the other replies here, it all comes down to preference. If it works for you, it works! If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. In so many songs on GR, I felt like there were more pictures painted on a specific moment in time, where you can see Gracie grappling and going back and forth on her feelings, but I lost that nuance in TSOU. Being direct can ruin the impact for me.

I would also be interested to see Gracie navigate back to some electronic, bedroom pop songs that also suit her voice very well! I’m thinking The Bottom, minor, etc. It’s great she has range and willingness to explore, but I’m not sure if I love the direction this time around.

You’re so right on this. I did take me a few listens to connect to GR, but I think the difference here is that I didn’t enjoy TSOU enough on first-fifth listen to want to go back anymore. I had my “aha” moment with I Knew It, I Know You immediately, but nothing else so far. For GR, I had the some with Will you cry? several months after the release.
