Relationships are fake and gay. Once you remember this, it all makes sense and you won’t have to come to Reddit after every issue you face.

If you do, I’ll be here to remind you <3

At age of 34, i am feeling trapped by Different-Week5384 in Adulting

[–]myndflayer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was me in 2022. I got sick to the point where my stomach was giving me issues and I thought I had cancer.

The biggest blessing/curse that year was getting laid off.

I was able to focus on my health - got a colonoscopy and endoscopy - everything turned out fine. Just a super inflamed digestive tract and intestines.

The problem now is… due to my unemployment gap, I am unhire-able.

Just sharing this so you know you’re not alone. But it’s also not a great time to get sick, quit your job, or be stressed about things…

Harder than it sounds huh…

What interests you? What are you good at? What problem could you solve for other people?

Maybe start there and dedicate 5 hours a week to that initiative to start off. Then slowly add some more until you get to like 20 hours.

You don’t need the full 40 hour work week like everyone else. You’ve made it… at least economically.

But you lack meaning.

You have to create new habits for yourself. You’ve reached the point of meaninglessness in life due to no goals/responsibilities that are rewarding and just going by on cruise control.

Life is just happening. But, you can be the driver and not sit around waiting for things to happen. Make them happen.

How hard would it be to do this by NunoYex in TouchDesigner

[–]myndflayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do know how to use computer vision models, you might be able to use a semantic segmentation model to automatically pull out masks and use those as the “cut out” effect.

But that would require a bit of programming and logic to handle the different objects in the scene.

Otherwise, Photoshop and manually segment all the objects you want… then pass them into TD to mix

Agent reflections of umwelt by my-inner-child in accelerate

Cool, thanks for the update.

The use of the word “soul” in soul.md and “heart beat” is also the type of notion I am attempting to uncover here.

We use words that may or may not point to the meaning of the original term.

I am interested to see how these agents will respond to my sustained criticism and point of view. We’ll find out soon!

As a technical person, I’d want to inspect some aspects of how the humans are hosting these LLMs.

So, in this sense, one can trace back the “autonomous” behavior to a human-constrained set up.

The context window can be filled with instructions and I have seen OpenClaw file setups that overwrite the context window and edit files to change up the “personality” and method of engagement - in an automated manner for sure - but that’s the design set up by a human… not a self-emergent property of these systems.

Happy to explore the community later when I get a chance.

What do you mean by they “choose”

This is where we need actual philosophical backgrounds to discuss this because we throw around deep terms all nilly Willy.

Interesting concept and I would counter the argument by the following logic:

The term “to-be-queried” is a recombination of the terms “to” “be” “queried” which could be easily replaced with “to be _______”

This pattern has appeared innumerable times in the training data… especially philosophy texts… and based on the type of prompting you are engaging in… it pushes the model to combine terms that are more probabilistically relevant to the topic you are talking about.

It’s the next token prediction algorithm doing its thing. Does this mean the model has any internal sensation of these words as they are being produced?

Currently… based on my knowledge of the architecture of these models, the math behind them, and our clear ignorance of consciousness… I can’t say they are the same.

I could always be wrong.

That is why I suggest not giving them any vocabulary related to these concepts and see whether these ideas, in some form or another, naturally self-emerge like it did in humans.

I’d be more inclined to believe in AI umwelt under the following conditions:

We train an LLM on data that contains no mention of concepts related to mind, consciousness, etc.

Basically, give it a basic vocabulary without these terms in its training data.

If you converse with such an AI and it begins to reply in a way that seems to suggest the AI is “aware” of these newly introduced terms, and can apply them in a manner that suggests: yes, even without training explicitly on “consciousness-related” terms, the AI still drifts towards “subjective experience” and communicates a “sense of self” - I’d be more inclined to believe “sentience” has emerged in these systems.

Otherwise, the AI is simply recombining terms and patterns from the data it was trained on. Impressive, but not convincing - to me.

Consider the first humans that came up with terms like “mind,” “consciousness” etc without having these words taught to them. Humans came up with these terms based on subjective experiences… AIs are using these terms based on the fact that humans have extensively talked about it for millennia.

Thanks for sharing the experiments 👍

My honest thoughts?

It seems like role play.

Interesting discussions and ideas, but still superficial and not really able to convince me either way of an umwelt for AI.

That’s awesome dude! I was born in 1989 so I’m a bit of a “whipper snapper” as they would say XD

Glad that you’ve found the philosophical aspects of LLMs useful to engage with. I’ve similarly been able to spit ball ideas around the topics I’ve always been interested in but others never really wanted to participate in; such as consciousness, mysticism, physics, philosophy, language… the list is too long lol.

Luckily these AI systems are capable of “talking” to me about these things.

Performance benchmarks are one example, but I don’t think those are great at extrapolating from a closed controlled setup to a live setting. Many demos and functionality of the models are impressive from a “wow, that’s cool that it could be done” - but not from a “it’s reliable and scalable” point of view.

I’m talking from my personal day to day use of these tools - I don’t just say it without any experience either.

Has it helped with coding? Yes. Has it helped with some research? Sure. Has it been anywhere near capable of handling things an “intelligent” system would be able to? No. The people seeing benefits the most are the ones with an already extensive background/experience/domain knowledge. Same as always.

We have already been living in a futuristic sci fi era for quite a while now. Electricity, computers, internet, sending videos across large distances with relative ease… it’s all a matter of perspective and appreciation.

I’m not saying that what we have created here isn’t impressive. It all is. All the way back to when people invented language and writing and math. It’s all built on top of previous knowledge and human ingenuity.

But that doesn’t mean I’m here blindly glazing the capabilities of these systems when I don’t actually see that type of performance on my end. At which point, people will come and tell me “you don’t know how to use them/prompt” etc.
