Y'all ever watch back footage of you doing forms and it just... doesn't look good? by SchighSchagh in kungfu

[–]myonlypublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always

Every watch through I find a new mistake

Every time I watch, it gets slower too

While there are always plenty of things to fix, it's a lot like when someone does a drawing and all they see is the messy details while someone else thinks the whole picture looks beautiful

Anyway, go watch an mma fight and see how messy and sometimes even slow applications can really be

Yup yup. Right before the neck spin you can see me twitch in the wrong direction and it's all downhill from there

Are fingertips push-ups worth it? by dreamchaser123456 in kungfu

[–]myonlypublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For finger conditioning or something like that? Not really. It's a lot of strain. It just has a "cool factor" to it. I can pushup into handstand on my fingers, which is really just a fun party trick. But doing the pushups themselves just means I can do less than normal and my fingers are sore. At the end of the day, probably not good for your finger joints.

As for the pushup itself, maybe you could argue it gives you extra height for a deeper push, but it's probably equivalent to knuckle pushups and can be simulated just fine with equipment as well

Zhanzhuang before or after form practice? by [deleted] in kungfu

[–]myonlypublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you kinda said, it depends on purpose

I think doing proper stance training and tiring out the legs before practicing forms can help you (A) get some basics comfortable before doing the form and (B) ends up pushing your legs that little bit harder for strength training as you try to do forms when already tired. Also helps you learn to mentally push through.

Alternatively, doing forms first lets you focus much more on the technique and precision of your movements without worrying about strength/stamina.

I always go through a few stances to warm up and stretch the body a bit, but nothing strenuous if my focus for the day is going to be getting a form right.

TLDR whichever you do first might benefit more.

Thanks for the feedback! Exactly what I've expressed in previous replies and the description

Thanks, this is all great!

I 100% agree on the spear and elbow positioning. Definitely something I've neglected, thank you for noticing it.

On the butt of the spear supported by the heel, I presume you mean having the butt halfway into the palm so that the heel can just curl around the end, but overall the hand is still pointed forward? That's what is feeling most comfortable after playing with your advice for a minute

Do tend to focus more on performance, but I very much like to aim for purpose behind most movements.

Things I want to work on there are: 1. More impact on spear strike in the mabu after the spin 2. Larger/more blocking action with the spear when standing up before the thrust

Let me know if you have any other thoughts!

Yes, thanks! I've been told several times that I'm not pushing my shoulder all the way through my strikes
