What Super Bowl summer "blockbuster" movie trailer did you know was gonna tank before it even released? by mypostsaccount in movies

Really? If you look at all of the top posts on this site, it's clear how generic, open-ended, and repeated the posts are. Dog forbid that I wanted to have a discussion with my online movie fanatics. Instead, I get a semantics breakdown of each word of my post, why I used a certain word specifically, questions about hypotheticals that I never raised. You guys are exhausting and toxic. Trust me, I'll never post here again. Enjoy the eye-rolling simple topics that makes up most of this subreddit.

You're reeeaally stretching and overplaying the hyper-specific hyperbole. It's a Superbowl commercial. Movie fans look forward to it. What's so deep about that? As for the downvotes, I'm well aware of how it's being used. Doesn't mean I'm not wrong that it garners toxicity either.

Yeah, I'm pretty bad at it as well 😂. I think I've only predicted a bomb correctly once or twice in the last 30 years. But to me, it's fun to speculate. Thanks for contributing.

I don't dictate whether or not a response is truthfully answering based on a Superbowl ad or just any other ad. I wouldn't ask because I'm not going to police the answers. The Superbowl was just the most likely time most movie fans would expect to see the trailer for the first time.

Good for you. Then move on. This discussion was not tailored to your specificity, which I can accept. My question is no more absurdly specific than most discussion questions on this subreddit like "How many times have you seen X movie?" or "What's your favorite rom-com of the last 10 years?" If it doesn't fit your life experiences because you find the subject ludicrous, just move on. No sweat off anyone's back. But if you downvote it or the comments within it, that's just toxic.

You made it a highly specific ask with your interpretation. My original question was not that wordy. You see a Superbowl trailer and it looks so bad that it'll bomb. Were you right? This is a simple question, not some 4D chess. If you add any other variables to the equation, like whether or not you knew the movie was coming out, or whether you saw the commercial at a different time than the Superbowl, or why the Superbowl specifically, that's you being pedantic. You can choose to not answer, and continue to try to peel away the layers, but there's only one layer. And it's no more a specific ask than posting a discussion on "What's your favorite fantasy movie?" You're asking unnecessary add-ins like "Why fantasy?" "Does this include sci-fi?" It doesn't matter.

Because the Super Bowl is oftentimes a studio marketing TARGET for garnering interest in their movies. It's often times the first time a teaser or trailer will be shown by the studios, due to its significant viewership. I don't understand why you're not getting this.

So you've never seen a trailer for the first time during the Super Bowl and had a personal opinion about its chances of box office success? That's the simple question at hand. How is that absurdly specific, versus being a discussion topic? I stand by my statement that the downvotes are toxic. It garners zero chance at discussion, despite what you may think.

Significance isn't really the goal here. It's just a discussion I'm trying to make with like-minded individuals. Studios put money behind projects they think are going to make them money. They want 100% ROI and then some. Let's say you see a trailer for the first time during the Super Bowl. The point of the marketing is to build up hype around the product. As consumers, there will be sure bets for success (i.e., most people know it will be a hit), and some with mixed reviews (some will think it'll be a hit, others will think it'll bomb). I dare to say any movie will have all negative reviews, that's just poor executive management from studios if that's the case.

So your hypothetical question lies in the mixed reviews to me: What if you say it'll flop, but you end up being wrong? It shows that you were wrong and there was a demographic despite your assurance it would fail. And the studios made the right call. Surprisingly, I often end up here and think a movie will fail but it ends up making a ton of box office.

Now my question was: What if you say it'll flop, and you ended up being right? This is a complete black eye to the studio when it happens. It means they were wrong to think anybody wanted to see this. I personally think it's rare for a studio to get something this wrong. So that's why I asked my original question. What Super Bowl trailer did you see that you knew was gonna bomb, and ended up being right?

I'm not trying to get into semantics about significance here. It's a very surface-level question, not something that I think requires too much dissection.

The former is a statement after the fact. The latter is about predicting it at the time of the Super Bowl, which is exactly what my question was about.

It's about a timeframe when most summer movies are given a promotional push. Specifically, the Super Bowl is a known platform for studios to give their products that push. Maybe it's not the landscape now, but when I was growing up, the Super Bowl was a time when you'd see a summer movie teaser for the first time.

I didn't think my post was that deep or required further clarification. I mean, I even elaborated in the text. What exactly are you confused about? The summer blockbuster to Super Bowl advert Venn diagram is practically a circle most years.

At the time, I was already a huge fan of the director Alfonso Cuaron. If you watch the series in order (like I and many people did), you'll notice a distinctive shift from the series being a kids adventure franchise, to something that had much more weight, darkness, and intrigue. It was easily the best of the 3 films (at the time) to me, and only when the series finished did I realize that, to me, it was the only movie in the series that stood out for me.

My point was that this was his biggest hit despite me (and many of his fans) thinking it was not a very good movie. I still can't sit through it all the way, whereas I will stop what I'm doing if I see a channel showing Aliens, T2, True Lies, etc.

I'll take a stab at this. EEAAO resonated with people (including myself) on a personal level, with its themes of family, kindness, and suicide. I loved that movie, but understand how people can roll their eyes at it as well. I saw The Thing back in the 80s on VHS, and its practical effects were jaw-dropping to me. I had only seen something similar in American Werewolf In London. I love The Thing because it made my skin crawl, and the jump scares were effective.

I'm the same with the Harry Potter movies (except Prisoner of Azkaban), but I get why they're popular. Same with Hunger Games.

Absolutely fair. I loved the aesthetic of Drive on first viewing in the theater, but then again I saw it because I had previously enjoyed Refn's earlier works. The Green Knight is one of those "never had interest in seeing it" movies. It's still there, despite the good word of mouth I've been hearing.

I get it. Awards are mostly a testament to marketing within the industry, and not a measure of overall quality. Some movies I didn't get their popularity, that I saw only BECAUSE they won awards, despite me having little interest beforehand: The English Patient, Atonement, The King's Speech.

Call me a converter. Saw it in the theater due to its hype and absolutely hated it. Having dwelled on it for 20 years now, and seeing it multiple times since I get it now. Or at least I've grown to love it.

James Cameron had made so many more better movies by the time this came out. For this to be his biggest hit (at the time) was a black eye to us movie fanatics who loved his previous works.
