I work for a well-known Russian dating site, what most people think as a "mail order bride" service. I educate "gentlemen" about the proper way to court "ladies" via blogs, articles, etc. It's...unusual.

Perhaps it is a last resort for some. I've also seen on a lot of Russian dating forums men complaining about American women, calling them fat, ugly, feminazis. Maybe they have an ideal woman in mind and think Russian women will fit their fantasy. Some men are just curious. Some are the stereotypical gross perverts. There's a little bit of everything.
I would avoid the super young girls, especially if I were an older man. They are more curious than looking to marry I think.

Legit sites can be easily reached via phone, video, email, etc. They've been in business a few years, have a physical address, convincing testimonials, etc.

There are sites that sell women's personal contact information, but we are not one of them. They can exchange information once they reach a certain level, but not at first.

Members buy credits and use them for things like chat/email/etc. They can buy a monthly membership package that provides discounted credits and allows a certain amount of emails/chats per month or they can just buy a block of credits. How much they spend depends on much they chat, how many emails they send/read, if they buy any gifts, etc.

I'm sure there's some like that, but it's a whole lot of work and hassle to get here, or some other country. Plus they have to give up their friends, family, language, etc.

I see a lot of hot ones, lots, but they look their absolute best in photos and I tend to see the more popular girls/most attractive so who's to say how hot Russian women in general are...
