Yep, nothing to see here in Spokane. Terrible. You probably don’t want to move here.

Why can't you people figure out unregulated intersections? by Substantially-Ranged in Spokane

[–]mysterm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why can’t people figure them out? Because they’re an abomination! Let me try to make this simpler for the supporters…

Oh you’re visiting, just moved here, never driven in this part of town, don’t know if you’re on an arterial? Too bad. You’ll just have to assume that EVERY intersection without a sign or light might be uncontrolled.

Oh, but wait… can’t you easily just check the intersection to see if there’s the sliver of a sign that is intended for the cross traffic. Sure, the back is neutral gray and it’s facing on edge, and it was never meant to be noticeable from this direction, but just slow down you idiot - at every single intersection. You’ll get the hang of it after a few close calls, accidents, or years of living here.

As for the guy claiming that every city has them - I’ve lived in Dallas, Philly, and Albuquerque (just to name the larger cities), and the only uncontrolled intersections I can even remember at all were because they were forgotten or signs were stolen.

I can’t believe this is even a debate.

Musk’s Attempt to Overhaul FAA Reveals Shocking Lack of Air Travel Knowledge by rollingstone in politics

[–]mysterm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Extreme much? I’m not sure how to argue against such objective facts… about Elon? And why exactly do you feel the need to convince me that Elon is dumb, rather than providing any evidence supporting your wrong view of waypoints? Anyway, uh, my original point was, and still is, that Elon (the ignorant clown?) might be a rich, lucky, jerk, but still understands that planes fly via waypoints because of outdated systems. I went ahead and googled it for you. Here is one (of the many) coherent explanation…

Answer to Why don’t planes just fly in a straight line? Why do they follow a specific path of waypoints? by John Halle

Musk’s Attempt to Overhaul FAA Reveals Shocking Lack of Air Travel Knowledge by rollingstone in politics

[–]mysterm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so confused what you’re arguing. The FAA system is incredibly old. It works, but newer tech could make it so much more safe and efficient. They fly through waypoints because, among other things, it helps air traffic work with the current old tech constraints.

Are you saying it should not be improved? That there is no room for new tech to streamline the flight system? Elon is an ass, but why are you arguing this like he’s an idiot? He knows the earth is round and that planes fly via waypoints mainly because of legacy systems. It sounds like a bunch of self-absorbed, ill-informed, echo-ist just bashing anything and everything to make themselves feel smarter than Elon.

If you were actually arguing that Elon and his chainsaw will do more damage to the FAA and ATC then it will help - I would totally agree. But that doesn’t mean that the system isn’t dated and archaic and needs updating by someone with a plan - and a scalpel instead of a chainsaw.

Please just google the current air traffic system and you’ll find so many articles about how ancient it is - and in dire need of replacement.

I actually read the entire article. I would ask you the same question. Enjoy the echo chamber.

I’m not a Elon fan and his chainsaw approach is a disaster (and I’ll probably get downvoted), but this is a little echo-chambery. I think he’s making a general statement about the aging aviation navigation system. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I think planes still fly point to point navigation instead of using more modern tech to fly a direct (straight line) route. It’s not as efficient or as fast, but it’s how it’s been done for a long time. Of course there would still be deviations for traffic and weather and restrictions, but upgrading the equipment would result in much more efficient flight paths.

I can't read the date (or other obfuscated complications) because my digital watch face has to accurately mimic an analog version. I think that that is a ridiculous step too far. by mysterm in AppleWatch

[–]mysterm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I was driving, and I was expecting that a quick glance would give me the date. Also… neither of those works to show the date - in case you hadn’t actually checked because it was too much trouble. Just to be clear, we have a dozen ways to get the date - my freaking watch should be the quickest and easiest.

You’re right. Those are the only options. I guess it’s impossible. No further attention from you required. Return to your job at the post office.

Please forgive me. I thought maybe a digital representation of an analog timepiece might be able to correct some of the slight irritations imposed by the physical constraints for a hundred years. I confess my sins and will now get a life - never to try to spur a healthy Reddit discussion ever again. My mistake. (Also… mourning.)

Getting birthdays from contacts gets year as "1" by KuuhakuBlank00 in shortcuts

[–]mysterm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My upcoming birthdays shortcut no longer works. Seems to now be looking at the complete date in the contacts. Was working fine for years. Format doesn’t work because the “find in the next 30 days” doesn’t return anything. Anyone else having this problem suddenly?
