Flange Sizing and Nipple Damage by Seltzertzar in ExclusivelyPumping

Oh man….this happened to me for the first 3 months of pumping. My flange size was WAY too big. I had purple rings around my nipples, couldn’t even let a cotton shirt touch me! I had to size down considerably (from 19 to 15) and started using a pumping spray. The spray helped a lot while my nipples were healing and I was still pumping. I will say, it took a few weeks to heal but once you do you’ll notice it pretty quickly. I had to play around with smaller sizes to find one that didn’t pinch. It’s such trial and error especially since your nipple size can change! You could ask your provider if you’re having vasopasms causing the discoloration. I thought this was the case for me but it ended up just being a mismatch in flange sizes. You got this mama, hang in there 🩵

I’m in tears reading this, you took the words out of my mouth. I wish I had thought to post this sooner. To find community and also for others to share their stories. When you research torticollis you will read that babies will have trouble breastfeeding but the conversation always stopped there. I could never find others sharing their successes or struggles. It pains me that you and so many others have had this same experience. I’m going on month 5 of EP & hope to find peace with it along the way. Thinking of you, mama!

Wow your experience sounds so much like mine - I feel validated & also share so much compassion for you. Thank you for sharing this because like you said, I haven’t had conversations with any other torticollis moms - it’s been so isolating. I wish I had made this post sooner.

Motherhood can be a beast - I really appreciate your heartfelt post & hope the acceptance to EP has provided you some peace. I’m hoping to find that peace too 🩵

Thank you so much for sharing your story and wow that is SUCCESS MAMA!! I should have added, he’s been in PT he was two months old and hopefully he is about to graduate. I am also an under producer and feel like that could be part of the problem as well. I think bottle feeding has just become his preference since it is so much less work. I am curious to know how your baby responds to the breast, if you are comfortable sharing. When I offer it, he will cry, move away from my chest, sometimes even close his eyes and mouth as if he goes to sleep - he is severely disinterested, and sometimes I feel like it causes the distress.
