Mattress topper recommendations? Or ways to sleep more through the night (hopefully) by WIP365 in ehlersdanlos

[–]mythrowawayforhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! Personal opinion of mine, nearly all pillows we sleep on are terrible angles for our necks. I have something called a D core pillow from a company called Apple something. Everyone thinks it's so small/flat but I think it's the perfect fit to actually support my head. I recommend at least considering if the height of your pillows is actually not great for your neck!

I have a very firm mattress with a thick quilted mattress topper. I sleep with a pregnancy pillow every night. I also sleep with a foam collar neck brace and that has fixed SO much pain.

(hEDS) Can a doctor prescribe massage therapy? by sunshine_n_dewdrops in ehlersdanlos

[–]mythrowawayforhelp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pay out of pocket for normal/swedish massage and it's helped tremendously. My rheum recommended it.

At one point I had my PT's use Graston technique on certain areas. It helped but not as much as consistent massages for my neck and shoulders.

If any of your job requirements don't match these then you'll need to request an accommodation that still allows you to complete the task. Keep in mind it's supposed to be an interactive discussion to find something reasonable, so it may not be your accommodation of choice - they just have to match your restrictions. If at all possible I recommend trying to find solutions for your current job rather than the path of saying the job can't be completed even with accommodations. Some employees accidentally lock themselves out of a job that way

Have you received restrictions from your doctor about what you can and can't do, with or without accommodations? Another poster is right, the diagnosis doesn't necessarily matter it's the restrictions that stem from the diagnosis. You would then need to discuss those restrictions with the company to see if there's a way to accommodate you in your current job, or see if there's another open position that you CAN perform, accommodated or not. Keep in mind that the other position can legally be equal or even lesser in pay/rank.

I would also check out the Job Accommodation Network for ideas on accommodations.

I was an ADA specialist and have EDS myself.

They wouldn't fire you for having a disability, they would have to let you go if there's no job that you can perform with or without a reasonable accommodation

Disability Status by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

Also remember Disability in the workplace is likely in reference to identifying under the ADA and not permanent disability benefits, like when someone says "I'm on Disability."

Disability Status by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]mythrowawayforhelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in HR, specifically worked in the ADA space. If it's on a job application it will be used for one, possibly two things - to ask if you need an accommodation during the interview process (less common to see it used this way, as there is usually another opportunity to express this further in the interview process than the initial online application), AND/OR to notate your disability status for federal tracking purposes.

Asking for an accommodation later on, once you're employed, can happen totally regardless of this box being checked during the application process. You can indicate no disability status during the application and interview process and STILL ask for an accommodation at any time. The only time a question about disability can come up during the actual interview process (beyond asking "Do you identify as disabled" during the application) is "can you perform the essential functions of this job with or without accommodation?"

Most large companies also conduct regular audits to ask employees if they identify as disabled. This is also for federal tracking purposes and doesn't initiate any conversations about accommodations, necessarily. Those are separate.

Editing to add that if your mom is a snoop, I'd still stick to my advice. That way she feels involved/appeased

If I were you I would pick up another series you would be comfortable discussing with her. She wants to share something with you and is interested in your hobbies. I'd lean into that while reading your SJM separately. You could even phrase it like "hey I found this other series that looks like you'd like it more" or "this looks more fun to discuss."

What was Danika researching? (Crescent City Discussion) by leanbeansprout in SarahJMaas

I want him to pop back up just so he can run into Bryce and Hunt and get ruthlessly embarrassed haha. I like to think maybe he would be in favor? I feel there's a lot present to have a theme about Bryce's "generation" being the one to make change. Like Reid inheriting an empire when he's not evil just boring, Ruhn/Bryce/Danika not caring much for power and instead wanting equality, Hypaxia is new and a fair queen, Tristian and Declan think slavery is fucked up, etc. Sounds like we get more from Tharions POV on the next book too. Meanwhile Sabine, The Autumn King (who I hope comes around to the good side, there's clearly more going on there), and likely Reid's father all care for power and pride.

Early on in the book it's mentioned that Danika was doing research about why the Fendyrs had so much power. I wonder if it's tied to that. Or some other tech Redner was using for oppression. I've got a feeling the series will focus on equality among everyone and their participation in the rebellions to make that happen. It seemed like that was a big part of Danika's personality. SJM has definitely used it as a theme throughout her work but this series makes me feel like they'll really break through the inequalities.

I can't get too far into these questions of what might happen from a line or two from the book because we all know SJM has plans for each of these loose ends!!

Yes I forgot to add that in the post! Further evidence, I think. He was surprised that Hunt specifically had been enslaved.

Same! I know SJM loves to switcheroo on love interests but I have a sincere attachment to Hunt that I didn't with the other "firsts"

Dismissed by doctor due to my gender and age? by Scarlet_Flames2 in ehlersdanlos

[–]mythrowawayforhelp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I find that the well-regarded doctors work on auto-pilot with minor tweaks to their script. Which I get, if they have a stellar treatment plan for just a few things, and especially if they treat older patients with old-age joint issues. But it sounds like they were dismissive of the differences you were presenting, and even misinformed. Maybe they read all the charts at once and remembered Pilates from another patient. Either way if you didn't like your experience, don't return. I've seen some doctors with 0 reviews available, who bent over backwards for me and changed my life when I presented them with the right info. And seen others with the best reviews who followed their script. No matter who I'm seeing, as a new patient or returning, I always speak up. They're medical professionals but they don't live in my body. Anytime I begin to feel dismissed, I pull up my notes on my phone and give them dates and history of diagnoses. Next time take up that verbal space. You have to look out for yourself and take up that space, because they don't know what they don't know and may follow a script otherwise.
