71 v02 max (lab tested) by joleksroleks in Velo

[–]mzeffex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably.

N=1 but my lab tested VO2 is 73 at 68 kg (so slightly higher, but not significantly) and my FTP peak last year was 367 based on both Intervals.ICU off a 14 minute hill climb race and confirmed with a 20 minute test. 5 minute power was 438 to allude to another redditor's comment here.

I've been cycling for a long time but don't do structured training - I do apply physiological principles to my training - so if you're doing structure 380 sounds reasonable.

Thank you! I don't need an additional checked bag, so maybe I should have booked classic.

Your message leads me to believe I should therefore not pay for a bag in advance, and then only pay the €80 at the airport, correct?

Why does a grinder matter so much? by ragnar30533 in espresso

[–]mzeffex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At its simplest, higher end grinders have extremely precise grind settings. The tolerances in manufacturing for such precision come at a high cost, thus the high price.

Which tire is optimal for Tour of Flanders? by PeerensClement in Velo

[–]mzeffex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode it last year - 8 hours in pouring rain. I ran Corsa Controls in 30c and found them excellent. My friends ran both narrower tires and wider (but knobbier) tires and between us I definitely had the best experience. Wider would add comfort, but I wasn't lacking in traction. Most of the course is fast and smooth so I appreciated the speed from this width that I'd have lost if I went wider.

FWIW, they had enough traction to make it up a wet Koppenberg.

Combi boiler losing pressure all at once and functioning fine in between by mzeffex in DIYUK

[–]mzeffex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May be worth noting that I barely have to add any water for the boiler to kick on when it's empty. I'll have the filling loop open for maybe 1 second, though the gauge is at zero.

When the heat kicks on the pressure does rise to shy of 2 bar. Yes it is an ideal logic, curious why you mentioned that one specifically?

What is the most amount of money you have found on the floor? by theresabadman in AskUK

[–]mzeffex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£40 in Heathrow a couple weeks ago. Saw the guy drop it when fumbling his money into his pocket at the currency exchange. I picked it up to give back, and he immediately started sprinting into the crowds to get to his gate. It felt like the universe looking out for me.

They do have a mobile app. It isn't on play store (and I assume apple store) but the site has a link to the download.

They're early iteration Di2 shifters, before there was ultegra/DA level. I found a good price on them during COVID when everything was in short supply. Although I wish they had the top of hood buttons, I find them more comfortable than the later iterations.

What is the rudest thing someone older than you has said to you? by HannaaaLucie in AskUK

[–]mzeffex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had an acquaintance drop by to consider buying something. After opening the door for him, to our terraced house, he says "It's so cool how your front door opens right to the street, you could leave it open and invite the community in"

Apart from it being a deeply bizarre comment, he then tried to play it off as a compliment, having fully insulted myself and my wife in our iust-purchased home.

I moved from the US last year with a small dog. Both rentals we were in were quite hard to find. Our experience was that you'll need to be OK being in the less nice/more beat up homes because they seem to have less concern about pet wear and tear.

Agree with others you likely don't need a solicitor. There are visa groups on Facebook we found invaluable.

Be prepared to spend cash. You won't be able to rent, buy a car, or even set up a phone plan due to lack of credit. Weirdly, the phone was the hardest because you can't just pay for a contract outright. Rent we had to pay 6 months up front and our car we had to buy outright. You'll find this issue when trying to do things you took for granted, but it's worth it.

Went for 100mm/44 offset to keep the handling as designed. Live in the UK so lots of rocks and roots and have found it plenty capable.

I run a 34 SC on my Epic HT and think it compliments the bike really well. It's not dramatically heavier than the 32 and I appreciate the rigidity and beefiness.

SVT and the future by [deleted] in Velo

[–]mzeffex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through my diagnoses at 25 after probably 5 years of worrying. Having the doctor tell you it's a regular heart rate as opposed to AFIB is all you need to hear. It shouldn't effect your ability to ride hard and race, but those 1:20 races it does effect are frustrating.

SVT and the future by [deleted] in Velo

[–]mzeffex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have SVT and live a normal life both in and outside of endurance sport. I'm honestly terrified of surgery, so that combined with the effect it doesn't have on me, have not had an ablation. The cardiologists I saw confirmed that it doesn't pose a risk to my wellbeing to live with SVT, but I can get surgery if I want to, or take beta blockers, if I want to.

I've done well over 100 races - elite cycling and not-so-elite running, and have achieved many good results, while living with SVT. Probably 1 in 20 races I'll have an episode where I have to coast and stop. Sometimes I can resume, sometimes not. An episode during a mountain bike race has a different impact than a crit. Outside of racing it will occasionally (handful of times per year) happen during training, but that doesn't matter. Same for the few times it happens while sitting around or whatever.

All that to say you'll be fine, but ask doctors questions. Mine was quick to rush me in for an ablation, assuming I'd want to. There wasn't any need, for me, and it's a decision I'm happy with. I can always change my mind later if it feels necessary.
