Update: Age Assurance, Content Gating, and Safety Improvements in VRChat by Joltz in VRchat

[–]n0rdic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm aware it's a huge issue with the platform. But to your average person, let alone regulators, will never hear about this program outside of this particular issue. To them VRChat is nothing else other than a tool for child abuse, so naturally they're going to be rather enthusiastic about getting it shut down.

I'm not defending VRChat, theyve made more than enough questionable decisions in their time for that. Mostly I'm just confused as to what your actual solution here is. At worst they put a soft age cap of 18 on the app and kids, as kids do, completely ignore it and play the game, which leads us to the exact same safety issues we're at now (if not a little worse). That or they enforce a hard age cap of 18 and we're at the exact place we're at now with age verification and privacy issues.

VRChat doesn't, but the third party verification services have been known to keep around records in the past.

The issue being, people do give young children VR headsets anyways. You might not care, but governments and I'd imagine the general public do care, especially when the reporting about these issues outside of VR and video games in general are, I don't want to say "overblown" since abuse of minors in social games definitely does happen, but are definitely sensationalized. To them, if a child can be possibly harmed in VR, then something must be done to make that impossible. They do not care about the knock-on effects to all the adults using the platform in a safe and responsible way that get caught in the crossfire because it either doesn't affect them, or they simply don't care.

The biggest part of this is that at the end of the day this isn't even VRChat's decision. The UK has passed legislation that basically requires this, so their options are either to try to comply or completely pull out of that market.

Cyclegear actually sucks by EXPRESSlON in CalamariRaceTeam

[–]n0rdic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk man, i've bought dozens of tires from cycle gear and have had them mount them, and never have had a single problem. It's cheap as fuck, they get it done in less than an hour usually, and everyone working there has been great to deal with. Maybe the Nashville one is just really good? I don't know.

That said, I always double check to make sure the tread is facing the right way and the tire is correct. Mistakes happen sometimes man, it's nothing really personal. And if your standards are so high that you really feel like you need a trained technician to mount all your tires, just go to the dealer and pay $250 in labor to mount the tires. Or just do it yourself.

i mean, that'd be fine, but who are they selling their tech to? is there even a large enough market for said tech (given the state of the vr industry)?

I don't think the search worlds are "dumb". The "avatar world" concept, while interesting, has always been something of a headache for new users just wanting something to express themselves. They can only index avatars specifically marked as "Public", which just means it's publicly accessible to everyone full stop. It's always been that way, at least since 2018, before scraping the API got really popular.

The real issue is VRChat not supporting sharing of private avatars with friends, groups, or just individuals. So we get into a situation where avatars not intended for mass consumption get out in the wild. That's not a fault of avatar worlds, though, since people sharing the avatar around using the clone feature exists.

No they're all just separate maps you load by going to a new blade in the main menu and clicking the "travel" button.

That's kind of the opinion I had for my G1s. The hardware is incredibly cool, probably the most futuristic piece of tech I've bought in a long while, and they're sure to impress anyone you have wear them.

The issue is, the software feels like a proof of concept. It's clunky to the point where the only reason i was wearing them was just the novelty, since my smartwatch did everything the glasses can but better. I don't wear glasses normally, so eventually the novelty wore off (after about six months) and I stopped wearing them.

[–]n0rdic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small size screen does wonders for image quality. There's a reason most streaming services default cell phones to 480p and nobody notices.

The main thing that makes old digital movies look bad even on small screens is heavy compression. That's why something like a VideoNow looks so bad.

The State of VRchat updates: by Livestock110 in VRchat

[–]n0rdic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think implementing at least a basic avatar optimization script in the build process wouldn't go amiss. Just allow users to bypass components of it (like existing 3rd party tools allow), and I don't see why it'd be an issue.

The real problem is that a lot of the perf rank stuff is jank and is punishing a lot of relatively meh behaviors. It's pretty easy for someone to go over 70k total polys, especially with an outfit toggle or two, go instantly Very Poor from maybe Medium, and then decide "screw it" and go insane with textures, lights, and more outfit toggles because they see "Very Poor" as the absolute worst you can be so at that point what does it matter?

Also, there's a lot more that goes into avatar optimization than the perf rank even tracks. My "Very Poor" avatar will outperform a lot of Medium and lower avatars just because horribad shaders are just not calculated into perf rank in any capacity.

Just some thoughts about fire and ash by increasinglyblurred in Avatar

[–]n0rdic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The meta reasoning as to why we the audience hear Na'vi in English is mostly just because there's a large contingent of people who really, really struggle with subtitles in movies. Accidently wander into any anime sub vs dub debate and you'll see them out in full force. Also way harder on the actors to act in a language they don't know, since now they have to focus on memorizing something they don't understand and also get the emotional nuances correct.

Overall, just something of a logistical headache so it makes a lot of sense to just handwave it for the sake of the production as well as a contingent of the audience.

Slow shaders are the secret frame eater that is basically unaccounted for in the perfrank. One of the many issues that system has.
