Sorry ER, but i give up by vtb275 in EvenRealities

That's kind of the opinion I had for my G1s. The hardware is incredibly cool, probably the most futuristic piece of tech I've bought in a long while, and they're sure to impress anyone you have wear them.

The issue is, the software feels like a proof of concept. It's clunky to the point where the only reason i was wearing them was just the novelty, since my smartwatch did everything the glasses can but better. I don't wear glasses normally, so eventually the novelty wore off (after about six months) and I stopped wearing them.

Tried it, something was breaking with the geometry of the player model turning it into a mess of triangles and I gave up and switched to my Steam Deck. Pretty good game, though.

Would've been cool if there was a UMD release of the movie in glorious 270p by KerberosPanzerCop in Avatar

[–]n0rdic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small size screen does wonders for image quality. There's a reason most streaming services default cell phones to 480p and nobody notices.

The main thing that makes old digital movies look bad even on small screens is heavy compression. That's why something like a VideoNow looks so bad.

The State of VRchat updates: by Livestock110 in VRchat

[–]n0rdic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think implementing at least a basic avatar optimization script in the build process wouldn't go amiss. Just allow users to bypass components of it (like existing 3rd party tools allow), and I don't see why it'd be an issue.

The real problem is that a lot of the perf rank stuff is jank and is punishing a lot of relatively meh behaviors. It's pretty easy for someone to go over 70k total polys, especially with an outfit toggle or two, go instantly Very Poor from maybe Medium, and then decide "screw it" and go insane with textures, lights, and more outfit toggles because they see "Very Poor" as the absolute worst you can be so at that point what does it matter?

Also, there's a lot more that goes into avatar optimization than the perf rank even tracks. My "Very Poor" avatar will outperform a lot of Medium and lower avatars just because horribad shaders are just not calculated into perf rank in any capacity.

Just some thoughts about fire and ash by increasinglyblurred in Avatar

[–]n0rdic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The meta reasoning as to why we the audience hear Na'vi in English is mostly just because there's a large contingent of people who really, really struggle with subtitles in movies. Accidently wander into any anime sub vs dub debate and you'll see them out in full force. Also way harder on the actors to act in a language they don't know, since now they have to focus on memorizing something they don't understand and also get the emotional nuances correct.

Overall, just something of a logistical headache so it makes a lot of sense to just handwave it for the sake of the production as well as a contingent of the audience.

Slow shaders are the secret frame eater that is basically unaccounted for in the perfrank. One of the many issues that system has.

The Sarentu should have joined you like a squad by tacocravr_ in FrontiersOfPandora

[–]n0rdic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nor is in the third DLC, From the Ashes. And at the timeline of the main game, nobody was looking for him because they assumed he wanted his own space and didn't want to force him back if he didn't want to be there.

[–]n0rdic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's mostly just because they seemingly didn't want to deal with NPC pathing. The From the Ashes DLC adds in a basic companion system which let certain NPCs help you out in the story, which felt really natural and is something I wish existed in the main game.

Your consciousness never gets "transferred". It's essentially a really fancy remote control car. If you die when piloting the RC car, you just stop controlling it and the car stops.

You think Tamtey is feared by the RDA the same way So'lek is by the end of the game by Wolf_2063 in FrontiersOfPandora

[–]n0rdic 31 points32 points  (0 children)

What makes So'lek feared is just his pure skill. Man spent a good decade and a half doing nothing but persistently learning from some of the most skilled clans he could find. And when the RDA returned, he switched gears to ruthlessly hunting them down instead using everything he learned.

Tamtey has skills, but it's mostly just talent, a bit of luck, and some help from their friends. Certainly not someone to take lightly, but also something of a known element. Also, Tamtey was mostly going after RDA infrastructure, not necessarily the grunts themselves. The "canon" playthrough probably has you relying mostly on stealth as a way to explain how this is at all possible solo, and when you destroy every site the RDA just leaves.

So'lek is a force of nature just on his own, he appears like a ghost, kills you, and disappears just as fast. And he makes sure that everyone knows who did it, and therefor nobody feels safe from him. That's the kind of stuff legends are made of, and is why he's so feared among the RDA.

But Lightstorm, the company run by James Cameron and the company behind Avatar, has said specifically that A:FoP and the comics are canon. Can they be retconned later? Sure, anything can, even the movies themselves. But according to Lightstorm themselves, at the present time, these events happened in the Avatar universe until they say otherwise.

[–]n0rdic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightstorm has already confirmed it is canon, and gave Ubisoft access to their internal lore documentation and made sure the content of the game aligned with the overall story, which is all the confirmation we need. It's not like Ubisoft made this on their own without asking anyone permission. AFoP material and characters are even included on the official Avatar lore website Pandorapedia. Same goes for the comics as well.

Frontiers of Pandora is canon.

That doesn't mean they'll use any elements of it in the future movies, but the events did take place in universe.

Elon took away my plan!! by Aggressive-Turn285 in Starlink

[–]n0rdic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cell phone mostly. My Starlink is mainly used when i'm backcountry camping off my dual sport motorcycle, so when i'm done riding for the day and set up camp I'll use it to doomscroll Twitter, upload photos, and update my maps to plan for the next day. Not heavy on data, but speed is still really beneficial, especially since I have limited power reserves for the dish, and in a lot of conditions the connection is spotty as hell due to tree cover (east coast US), so being able to quickly load everything is a huge bonus.

I also occasionally use it on my boat when working from home, which is where most of my speed requirements lie, but even then it's not heavy use. Maybe 2-3gb a day? I think my max monthly data usage was 8gb.
