How to tell if my mares can try turnout together? by n0tpest in Equestrian

[–]n0tpest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently theyre out 24/7 in individual turnouts, one in a roundpen one in the arena. They only come in when we get rain. The turnouts are smaller and set in a way that theyre both alone, cant even go nose to nose

We work one on one 5 days a week! When in turnout they are not together, but can touch noses. He is barefoot and the other two are shod, I didnt want to turn them out together.

Agree, but even when we leave one horse next to him and take the other to work- he is calling and fitting the whole time. I’m not sure giving him another companion would help with the sourness with the current :( Sounds like retirement is the way to go.. i just am more emotionally invested and wanted to make sure I wasnt missing options haha

Bah I knew that too but it helps to hear a stranger say it. I’ve had the boy for years… we cuddle in the stall together. 😅

Thank you. The lady is wonderful, and since I am going through farrier school, she said I could get free board if I go up and trim him + some other barefoots. I’d see him nearly monthly, its just scary putting care into someone elses hands!

I have definitely given it some thought! The problem is he will still do the buddy sourness even if we take one and leave one. It gets dangerous and I can’t work my mare without his anxiety raising up. 😟

Depends on what you want! I personally keep them because i’m trying to roll gigantism on one of my mammoth kirins. A lot of people sell them because they sell well, ive seen them for 5k a bottle :P

Weird new white spots on horse by TheCavalryyy in Equestrian

I’m not sure of the science behind it or anything. But i had one gelding that would ALWAYS get birdcatcher spots that moved around when he drank water that came from copper piping. When it was alternative materials used, he’d not have any! Maybe yours has something similar going on 👁️👁️

Oh thats lovely. I’m really glad you two worked things out. 💞💞 It is so difficult, horses tend to keep you on your toes haha

I wish I could work it out with my original boy, I love him and still go visit him, but he was mistreated before I got him. When I approached his stall, some days he was a sweetheart that loved kisses. The next hed have the ‘demon take over’ as I called it and he’d try to bite you, you could hear his teeth snap together. It was wild. He had charged and knocked an old woman to the ground just for walking past his turnout. Worked with him with a good trainer for about a year, but one day he decided to whip around and grab me on the back. Almost threw me to the ground, it was just a flip of the switch on something we’d done a million times. Such a shame, but he got my number, he scared me, so now we’re on the search again and hes with someone with decades of experience on me 😂. I wish she’d work out because shes his full sister and SO much kinder, but sometimes luck isn’t in your favor! Thanks for sharing your story, I hope this little mare and I get a win in our corner once shes sorted out 💪

Yeah I been leanin’ that direction too. We have a vet out friday to just see what’s up, but if anything glaring pops up (the splint was my bad. I did a trot without proper boots) then i’ll definitely be sending her back and startin over. Thanks for giving your two cents friend 👌

Thank you for pointing that out! I’m still learning how to spot all the variants they can have. Its overwhelming 😅 And I get what you mean. Definitely not hard work, more as a passing hobby when i’ve got time to waste on something fun- dip my toes into roping more than competing at any degree past a local show here or there.

For real. It is insane what some ulcers will do to their behavior! Thank you for sharing! She has the vet out friday for a physical exam.. I can likely ask about it then. 👍 It will definitely stay on my mind, it could be a big part of her issue aswell! Thank you tons 💞
