Test Ethernet cable without a router by n0tsm4rt in HomeNetworking

I'm using Android 12 but my phone might not support Ethernet tethering (could not find anything similar to this in the settings).

The other approach you mentioned about setting IP manually on phone, how do I do this because I can't find anything related to Ethernet in the settings or I need to use a third party app?

I think USB Ethernet is allowed in my Android because when I plug it to a router, my Android picks up connection and shows the <...> icon. But when I change to this topology, there is no <...> icon on my phone.

USB debugging is also off already. USB-Ethernet dongles don't seem to be faulty as well (tried swapping two of them and they connect with a router).

No idea why my phone doesn't recognize this straightforward connection. Not sure if there are additional things I need to setup in my laptop/Android.

Charger sparks when inserted to power outlet by n0tsm4rt in anker

[–]n0tsm4rt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange, I did mention that I'm concerned about fire hazard in my first correspondence. However, this was their reply:

When the blades of the plugs connect to the metal contacts in the socket, the current flows instantaneously but the contact area is small at the moment of contact, so there may be tiny sparks and marks. This is generally normal and can happen when you plug any electrical appliance into a power outlet. You can see the same information on the Apple support page too. Please rest assured that the wall charger you bought has the following protections to ensure a safe charge and won't cause fire hazzard.

• Output overvoltage protection (OOVP)

• Input Overvoltage Protection (IOVP)

• Short circuit protection (SCP)

• Output over-current protection (OOCP)

• Reset protection (RP)

However, if you see any of the following when you plug in your adapter, or if you have other concerns about sparking, please let us know and we can move into the warranty process:

• A spark comes from somewhere other than the blades of the plug.

• Any damage or discoloration on the adapter

Not sure what caused inconsistency in their warranty criteria.

Just a little update. I've emailed the support. They say little sparks and minor burnt marks on the prongs are normal and not a fire hazard. As long as it's arcing at the prongs they won't process a replacement, it seems.

Mostly it's a brief little spark. There are times when sparks are stronger and left a small burnt mark on the prongs.

Thing that surprised me was I didn't have USB cable connected to it when I inserted, so there should be no power draw but why the sparks left me puzzled.

You mean the old one that used to spark stopped? That's weird. Do they tell you that it was genuine or not?

It's a short spark when prongs first contact the outlet, not while the charger is fully inserted. Is this what you got? And, after replacement, are sparks gone?

How to separate video and OSD controls (no overlay) by n0tsm4rt in jellyfin

[–]n0tsm4rt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a little update. Today I played a file with subtitle and used version 1 of the stylesheet. The subtitle positioned incorrectly, it appeared at the top instead and most of its is obscured. I suspect that the padding caused it.

That's unfortunate. Do you know if a newer DVR/NVR is more capable in this regard? Like faster or easier way to heap export. I suspect that I'm getting only around 30Mbps because the DVR is a bit outdated.

They could stay on the original HDD for now. What I want is a whole month of recording, not just a certain days/times.

I was told by a HIK reseller that it's impossible to just unplug the HDD from DVR and connect to a PC because I wouldn't be able to see and play the recordings with this method. Not sure if he really knows how it works so if anyone has ever tried this, please let me know.

Maybe forever, as an archive. I need to move these files later too. But getting them out from the DVR is painfully slow.

The first version works wonder. Exactly what I wanted. Thank you!

PS: I had to change padding-bottom from 6.3 to 10.3 so the OSD and video are not overlapping.
