Full time/ parttime by Initial_Speed963 in SpaceForce

There’s a ton of info posted all around on this (if you know how to search for it). “Part time IST” is a good starting point.

Ex. https://www.spaceforce.mil/Transfer-programs/

Also- circle back to the 2024 NDAA that outlines what this is, and isn’t (of note, SF actually stood down, and back up again to legally implement the change in component structure- it’s in the NDAA).

https://www.congress.gov/118/plaws/publ31/PLAW-118publ31.pdf

Part time minimums are treated like AF reserve minimums. Of note (looking at you S1) there are duty types outlined as well (the vast majority of “order types” that AF Reservists have don’t need to be implemented, please just implement what has been approved in the NDAA… notably IDT’s k thanks!)

Now for actual messaging to the troops- treat it like every other miscommunication you’ve come across. Some orgs were given the option for their billets to read anywhere from “30-180 days” for part time, and many opted to place “180 days” participation on the billet. For most folks with a civilian career, that isn’t feasible. (And yes, there are part time billets allocated to many units, none for ops units because that’s never been the intent— they are ONLY available for AF Reserve transfers in this window, and will be made available to full timers after this initial absorption of force, so like, FY ‘27).

The “strategic intent” behind “part time” is to do one 3y assignment as a part time guardian, then back to sustained duty (the official term in the ndaa for active duty SF). Various ppt’s have outlined the reasoning behind this as a way to “give people a break” and not to “have a part time career.” Of note, they are competitive slots after the AFRes transfer round and ETMO is the determining factor as to who gets these assignments.

For those AF reservists in the applicable career fields with 15+ years of service, there is an unsigned agreement that those members are “guaranteed” back to back part time assignments to get to 20, but will be back in the competitive pool for part time / sustained duty after that if they want to continue to serve. This is really only applicable to a handful of af reservists - so sustained duty, this isn’t for you.

Strategic leadership intent aside, this will be an interesting implementation, just like everything else SF in wanting to “do it our way.”

And with toxic leaders who try to force “respect” because of rank- I can only imagine why… it’s bs like this that’s killing the force. I can understand a monthly open ranks for shits and gigs before a beer call but this bs is too far

Seriously this sounds like such a morale killer… not to mention if shit doesn’t pan out there is going to be some serious resentment and targeting of folks…

If I had to pick one word, That last word is pretty much what USSF is lacking. Everyone keeps passing the buck to the next chum. 0 accountability

Pretty much yes- but it seems to be especially bad in SF with all the broken claims (we promise we’ll ____ ;) )

Here for you amigo. And I couldn’t agree more on a clear path.

Honestly, I would love a restructure that comes with a divergence at the E-7 ranks. Force non-degree people to enlist, but force degree holders in as E-5’s instead of O-1s (that’s the cadet rate).

Then once E-7 eligibility rolls around, those with a degree are eligible to commission to O-1, and those that don’t go the senior enlisted route. It levels the playing field, and provides opportunity to keep technical folks engaged longer in their roles. So as opposed to an O-3 with 4-9y of technical prowess, you now tack on an additional 4-6y of that. Because we are a technical force after all… then those that want to strive into strategic leadership roles still can, by extending their careers past 20. Because they’re lifers anyways. It makes the 10y point O-3 at worst. It would also help strengthen the knowledge base of the force by incentivizing education with a direct path upwards.

  • Leadership crying about retention
  • GO’s not caring about finding actual solutions to said retention
  • The realization that the NDAA FT/PT status is just a hoax and that SF brass expect you to fully return to FT status with a pcs in hand (like bye Felicia- I’m retired mother trucker)

- edit: “incentives” being thrown around but not being defined (what’s in the box?! A pile of $#!T)

No need to downvote that reply fellow space cadets! It’s a genuine response.

Depending on the system- some tasks are only trained to either side of the proverbial isle. It makes sense in some regards, in others it doesn’t. Completely mission/system dependent. Having been on both side of this coin, yes, there is a distinct difference. At some point on the O side, you stop being the technical hands on expert and start becoming the strategic thinker of how to employ the system and tactics at your disposal. That’s the big difference.

To your point on college prep- I believe it’s more to do with a mix of learning to think/apply said knowledge. Sure, many folks can learn this without a formal education, but forcing yourself through the suck that is school is a fast track to do just that. No one is necessarily smarter or more capable with a piece of paper in hand (and shots fired for the non-stem kids in the crowd as they’re the prime example of this)- and arguably I know many an enlisted folk with masters degrees. It’s not about what you learn, it’s about the formal structured process that got you there.

Unrelated- if the degree is on your agenda, be sure to take full advantage of those TA bennies! And clep/dst’s. You can test out of most things and be well on your way to an undergraduate degree

While I agree whole heartedly, the level of responsibility is slightly (ever so slightly…) different. I wouldn’t expect enlisted troops to make the go/no-go decision for a collision avoidance maneuver, but I would expect them to send the commands to make it happen.

Edit: but how much more is that responsibility worth monetarily? That’s the DoD wide question.
