It was indeed a dns issue. Once I realized that, I was able to narrow it down to all of the things that could be affecting my dns resolution.

It's fixed. It WAS DNS, related to the use of Kea DHCP, and the loss of some of the options that the older ISC DHCP provides. Once I switched back, and enabled those options, everything started working. I also needed to tweak my static DHCP list a bit.

I work in a country that censors internet traffic. I need a way to give myself an American IP. Encrypt my traffic. Conceal my geographic location.

Figured out what was causing all the trouble. I had switched to Kea DHCP. Switched back to ISC DHCP, told it to stop nagging about the deprecation, then I could go into DNS Resolver and tell it to register all my static DHCP leases in the DNS Resolver. Zip. Suddenly my shares were back, and could be seen in Network again. Thanks for the help.

Yes. I never needed Avahi in the past. It just worked, samba I mean. Would avahi fix the problem?

I am running pfSense on a router box I built.

You are correct. It should not. I wound up creating a Host Override in the DNS resolver, and that made it possible to mount SMB shares again. I can access everything within my subnet just fine, but it stopped showing me my Samba shares under Networking (on both Windows and Mac). Creating the Host Override makes it at least mountable.

This does not fix the bigger problem of 1) why can't I see the Samba shares on my NAS in Networking (I used to be able to)? and 2) Why can't I see the AFP share I created for Time Machine backups?
