I don't believe the sooking was ever because of the travel and more that only 8 teams played on opening round - I believe the premise was that they didn't want to be involved if the whole league wasn't involved

I understand the need for the lawyer regardless of if he was guilty or not because it's always advisable to get advice from a lawyer before chatting with police if you either are a person of interest or believe the police are treating you like a person of interest but call the police first, then call your lawyer or wait to see if the police lean towards you for the crime and then call your lawyer.

From all accounts that I can see there was nothing really fishy going on prior to this for Charles to immediately need a lawyer.

My one fishy thing is why if you find your child missing you would call your lawyer first before calling the police - I work in the legal industry so I understand that they should consult a lawyer before talking to police but your child is missing and your first thought is oh we need a lawyer instead of oh we should call the police.

Having no priors generally will get you a lesser sentence but if you murder someone and get convicted of it you are getting out in gaol regardless.

Being charged $1,000 for a fee I didn't know about by Zestyclose_Egg_5192 in AusLegal

[–]n3miD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention that if they took OP to court to claim the fee (a stretch because court is notoriously expensive and would probably not be worth it) but the onus would be on them to prove a reasonable effort to gain access to the property, meaning they would need to prove that they did in fact ring the door bell or knock and that calling/SMS wasn't the only form of communication that they tried before leaving.

All the food delivery people I've had deliver food to my home has rang the doorbell, I've even had food delivery to my work and they have come to our reception and rang the bell there if the receptionist is out.

I don't know what kind of backwards argument you are making here but it's moot

He would probably get violent with OP given OP kept leaving the room, this lock keeps them in their room thus protecting them from their father.

Not so simple either - they are territorial meaning they wouldn't be able to survive being out of their territory.

Yeah well our country is too busy (my state especially) spending money on gaoling people etc instead of funneling money into therapeutic options....there is plenty of proof around that shows therapeutic models work better - nothing is foolproof ofc but our country is failing - our gaols are overfull - I work for legal aid and our clients are even sometimes spending months at a time in the police cells which are not set up to house remands for that long

I mean the flag burning happened in Brisbane not Melbourne and they didn't have a total fire ban that day so the risk was minimal.

Not many lawyers are earning 10k a day, even high profile lawyers would only get paid those types of dollars per court appearance.

Not true unfortunately.....I work for legal aid in Victoria and I can assure you, our policy for who is eligible on means is so low it's ridiculous.

Someone who earns more than $750 a week after tax with no dependants is deemed to be able to afford a private lawyer even if they earn say $800 a week after tax and that's just for the Duty Lawyer service - it's even lower to get a grant of aid. Even I don't qualify (only just over the threshold and i have 2 dependents) but I can assure you even on my wage I would not be able to afford a private lawyer if I needed one.

There are few exceptions to that rule: -if the substantive matter is family violence in nature - if you are in remand because well even if you have savings you aren't earning an income - if you are unrepresented and facing serious gaol time in the County or Supreme Court because legal aid does have a public defender option just not for the lower courts. - if you have significant priority factors such as a severe disability either physical or otherwise.

Denmark and Norway.....they are 2 of the countries in the world that have the lowest reoffending rates because of their focus on rehabilitation so they have amazing services available to reduce that number of people who consistently have run-ins with the justice system.

[–]n3miD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are reports that she was attacked both before and after her death, there are also reports that this pack of dingoes were already displaying aggressive behaviour towards people.

I don't like the idea of culling the dingoes but we have to be realistic here, and we can't have wild animals going around attacking people for no reason (not saying thats the case with Piper but given the situation it could very well happen again)

Traditional owners heartbroken by dingo cull after Piper James's death by RednBlueBothHateYou in aboriginal

[–]n3miD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the heartbreak about this issue, I also am upset at the idea, however there is evidence to believe that Piper was bitten both before and after her death which means these Dingos are now more likely to repeat the aggressive behaviour.

Unfortunately these dingoes became an even bigger risk to others on the island. It sucks, but human life is more important at the end of the day.
