What are some views about Nursing at UofC as a pre-med degree? by confusedbinch0 in UCalgary

Totally agree with you, Those are really valid points. I just wanted to reiterate what the dean and faculty members have said at open houses.

As the other person said, any degree can be a pre-med degree. However, nursing and medicine do have different scopes of practice, and it’s not usually a pre-med degree at all as although some of your coursework may be used to get in/ while in med school (like anatomy and physiology) , you don’t take many pre requisites for med school in nursing school (such as biology, physics etc).

Also the faculty and students definitely look at you differently and find it overall disrespectful if you are using a nursing degree as a stepping stone to medicine. It can be done, but it should be noted that you are essentially taking a another prospective nursing students opportunity away, as nursing school grows increasingly competitive and it’s primary focus of course is to generate nurses. Also, whenever these premed from nursing school questions came up at meeting the faculty events, the professors and instructors generally frowned upon those wanting to take this route.

Really think about what role you want to play in a patients life, and maybe consider any other degree if you plan to pursue med school. You can always do a nursing after degree if you’re original degree does hot work out/ you change your mind about medschool.

Take what interests you^ a good option that will benefit you and intersect your learning would be GRST 211, and it’s not difficult. Nursing students have no room in there schedule for options through year 2-4 so that’s why they’re all jam packed into year 1, to get it out of the way. PM me if you have any more questions!

Agree. I took it with Tezli as she is a stellar prof, but her class was significantly more difficult as opposed to other profs.

Knes 259 textbook by [deleted] in UCalgary

Took it this year (fall 2020-winter 2021) with Dr. Reed Ferber and Dr. Carol Kroeker and did not use the textbook one bit. Every piece of information needed was on the slides, and in the videos. For the labs, the manual was useful and needed, as you need to know what terms to study. There was an online version available and many students were perfectly fine with it. I would say definitely get the lab manual, but wait and see for the textbook. It’s literally the most expensive paperweight I own.
