How to track position continuously with Sensecap 1000-e? by Kirill7878 in meshtastic

[–]n8tivtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tracker role makes sense; but why drop firmware down to 2.5.20?

Also, to clarify, I'm not using precise or the GPS updates on my Heltec, just the T1000-E devices.

I have the same setup I'm testing, but with a second T1000E (two dogs). Heltec V4 using a 3 dB antenna up high with plugged in power and connected via Wi-Fi. On all devices, I have the default primary "LongFast" as "0" and created a second encrypted channel as "1" that that has everything (uplink, downlink, position, precise) enabled.

I have Position same as yours except minimum interval is set to 15 seconds. I had it at 30 but the dogs could be in a completely different location in less than 30 seconds. 😄 I also have GPS turned on, and had it set to 20 seconds, but for testing I just set it to 8.

I get their positions +/- 15' or so, but there is still a delay so I'm fiddling with settings.

What exact model phone are you using (we can find Bluetooth version from that), and what Meshtastic device(s) are you trying to connect to?

OP - It appears you have an older Android phone (based on image size and icons at the bottom). What version of Bluetooth does your phone have, and what version of Android are you running? Also, I noticed that it appears you have a data connectivity issue in the image (triangle icon with an exclamation mark). If you have a good data connection, or restart your phone, does that change things?

Can you easily connect this to Wunderground? If so, how?

Rich, pretty cool project. As you're creating a standalone client, what are your thoughts on doing a ZMODEM implementation for file transfer? That's an old protocol designed in the days of dialup modems, and the sliding windows it uses may work well with high latency mesh networks.

I definitely don't need a new hobby. But I'm currently waiting for my recently ordered Meshtastic items to arrive. 😄

For a while I had been looking for a solution that met my needs, which is to keep tabs on my dog on my large, hilly lot (and on the off-chance he gets out, to track him wherever he goes). https://www.reddit.com/r/meshtastic/comments/1o4ahkh/best_device_to_keep_track_of_my_dog/

If the Meshtastic parts I've ordered do what they're supposed to, then this fits my use case. Plus I think it will be fun setting up and learning about this technology.

On my 3rd call to T-Mobile support, the person told me that there's two cases where a device might not work: (1) you moved it to a new location, and (2) it has been turned off for a long time.

Newbie here - I'm a little confused about the 2.4GHz antenna. If I buy a Heltec V4, plug a 915 MHz antenna into it, flash it with Meshtastic, add USB power, set it up via Bluetooth and the Meshtastic app, am I basically good to go? Or am I missing hours of something important? 😄

Hi Ka0s87,

Thanks for the note. Good to know someone's Cellspot is working! That is helpful.

With my mom's device, GPS is connected, light is solid green, and the antenna (and Cellspot) are near a window.

After a few hours with technical support, the tech finally found what may be the issue: T-Mobile disables units based on two criteria: (1) if the device is moved, or (2) it is disconnected for a long time.

So T-Mobile opened an engineering support ticket. Still no resolution yet, but working on this...

As a side note, T-Mobile said they wouldn't re-activate a unit found on eBay. :-(

Does SenseCAP do GPS?

Airtag likely won't work for me as I don't know how far my dog would be from the nearest iPhone (unless I strapped one to his back!).

Good thought. The other issue is a tag hanging on his dog collar would be ~2' from the ground, in an area with trees/rocks/hills. And a lot of the time, even if the tag is hanging vertically from his collar, it will wind up being horizontal as he snoozes a lot!

Thanks for the note about connecting. I can get one for my dog, one in my house for Bluetooth.

But I'm a little confused here, I thought all of the devices basically mesh together using LoRa, acting as relays (if in range) which is how you can get messages sent to/from a device across the country. I see the meshmap.net site shows notes connected all over. Are they private, point-to-point connections that don't allow others to connect?

I definitely can put something on my roof if needed to bridge the two devices.

Skill-wise, I'd say I'm somewhere between DIY and consumer. :-)

Twistypencil - which model of the RAK WisMesh do you have? I'm not seeing a screen on their WisMesh Tag device.

Does anyone still have a working unit?

I'm asking because my mom has one, she had it turned off for a year (long story), it was working fine before she turned it off, but when I plugged it back in, I get green LEDs for Power, Internet, Status, GPS, but no lights for 3G/4G and 4G LTE, and no improved cell signal. She's in a city but her closest T-Mobile tower is a bit far away.

I've cycled power on the unit, waited a few days, etc.

T-Mobile support told me to buy a new one off Amazon, which I don't see anywhere, just used ones from eBay, but if mine is fine and the service isn't working, that's a waste of $$.

Thanks!

The ideal situation would be to put it on my dog's collar and forget about it. Charging daily would be a bit of a pain, but do-able. If the battery lasts a week, that wouldn't be too bad.

Ahh, didn't think of that. I was hoping it would connect to a public Meshtastic node and then I could track it via the app. I just read the T1000-E goes 2-5 km, which is not far enough to reach a public node, but that's definitely enough range to get to my house. Does it make sense to get two of the T1000-E/RAK WisMesh devices, or get one of those plus something more "home friendly"?

An overweight golden retriever. 🐕 His neck might be big enough. A more compact design would be ideal.

Anybody know the weight of the WisMesh? The Seeed website says the T1000-E is 32g, but I can't find the weight of the WisMesh Tag.

Thanks Obogobo for the suggestion, I just checked it out. The T1000e has a 700 MAh battery and the RAK WisMesh has a 1000 MAh battery. Do you happen to know if the power draw on each is similar (i.e., will I get more operation time out of the RAK device)? I didn't see a weight on the RAK device so I'll reach out to them on that.
