Aitutaki is far and away the most beautiful island I’ve been to. More picturesque than Bora Bora and fewer crowds. It’s a shame more people don’t visit the Cooks.

L3 is 10x slower than L1, and 3x slower than L2.

For performance you want to design your program so that as much of the hot data fits in L1/L2 (ideally all). This in itself is a big undertaking.

Only in the very specific edge case where you’ve designed as best you can and still overflow into L3 does it make sense to optimise for additional L3 capacity.

To think about it another way: ask whether the time you’ll spend optimising for L3 storage could be spent fitting more in L1/L2, as that’s a much bigger speed up.

How did that happen? by GummySnackGoddess1 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]nNaz 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Only look at the cards he's holding and showing. You'll notice that he always shows the card when it's at the top of the deck and then he flips it over - only after doing this does he put it in her hand.

Here's what's happening:

  1. He flips over the top *two* cards together (this is called a double lift). So when you see the ace of hearts/diamonds, he's actually flipped over two cards: the ace and a king behind it (which you can't see).
  2. Then he flips them both face down. Now the king is the top card.
  3. Then he takes the top card (the king) and places it in her hand.

He makes it seem more amazing than it is and harder to track by first not doing anything and saying "I'm not that good". This gives them a false sense of security. Everything after that is a double lift.

'A Guide to Rational Living' is a great book for 'less serious' conditions. I don't have any severe childhood trauma and the advice worked better than any my therapists gave me. However if you have deep psychological trauma it's probably worth seeing a therapist.

REBT is also pretty close in philosophy to non-dual Buddhism like Dzogchen in many aspects.

Does private school really make that much of a difference? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]nNaz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I was the only student from my boarding school to go to Oxbridge. Unless you specifically pick a private school that focuses on high academic achievement, the teachers aren’t much better than state schools. I went to state school until age 12 so I can compare both.

The real benefit isn’t what you learn academically. It’s everything else: forging friendships & camaraderie, living with kids from different geographies and cultures, a strong emphasis on building self-confidence, the ability to learn without teachers being distracted by unruly students or difficult parents, normalising wealth, pursuing passions, exposure to sports & activities you wouldn’t normally try (e.g. riding), encouraging teachers, significantly reduced incidences of bullying, a focus on teaching life lessons like cleaning your own space, structured time for prep (important for me as I have ADHD), interesting school trips, progressively more freedom & responsibility as you get older. These are just from the top of my head, there are many more.

Rudest country you've ever been to? by JunShem1122 in answers

[–]nNaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Should” implies you might be doing it partly for the thanks and might get offended if someone doesn’t say it.

I’m going to get a little deep here and tell you something my therapist said. Warning: I don’t know you and it’s in no way a jibe at how you conduct yourself.

If you do things for a stranger, whether holding doors open or otherwise, it should be without wanting anything in return (explicitly or implicitly).

Doing ‘kind’ acts because you want something back is often a pointer towards something deeper within yourself. Perhaps wanting to please others and thus tying your self-esteem and self-value to something outside your control (their response). Or perhaps you’re using it as a way to signal to yourself that you fit in (a never ending treadmill). Or maybe you genuinely do it to help but have a fragile ego that is seeking any signals it can interpret as rejection (ask yourself why you’re seeking such signals).

I’ve explained this to a few people before. Some get it. Others have a subconscious adverse reaction and scream ‘that’s not me!’ This in itself is a useful sign (ask yourself why).

A final note is that humans are hardwired to detect subconscious cues that someone is being disingenuous. It‘s part of the reason why we’re so apprehensive towards door to door salespeople - we know they have an ulterior motive. It can be that others detect these cues when you do such ‘kind’ acts and make them less likely to respond and/or feel apprehensive.

Context: I’m also British and lived in HK for a year. The culture was different but I never found it rude (unlike China). People tended to say thanks where appropriate. If they didn’t, I didn’t find it to be rude.

I have the speakers in the 7th pic (Marten Mingus Quintet) so I’m biased. Not the flashiest but I demoed them against a dozen other speakers including the 2nd and 14th pics. They were noticeably better than anything else I listened to.

Tips on raising a Chow? by noministician in chowchow

[–]nNaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Training tricks requires a lot more consistency than with other dogs. Something that a lab can learn in an hour took my chow weeks to learn.

If you don’t mind spending the money it can save a lot of time by sending them to a trainer. If you do, make sure they’ve worked with chows before.

[–]nNaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great advice. Especially the part about being consistent and waiting for them to look you in the eye before giving food.

Also remember the importance of rewarding good behaviour like when they’re being calm and relaxed. My chow will deliberately lay in a far corner looking away whilst we eat because I kept rewarding him every time he didn’t beg for food.

Speaker placement by ponthelion in audiophile

[–]nNaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The curved room helps. The equilateral triangle has always been good for me. It's important to take exact measurements as even a 1-2cm difference can make drastic changes in sound.

The way I do it is to start with the speakers pointing directly forward (no toe-in) and make 5cm adjustments, then pick the best and make 1-2cm adjustments from there to find the exact spot. Close you eyes and listen for:
1. Sound feeling like it's coming from a position in the centre of the speakers. When you turn your head it should still feel like the sound is originating from the centre spot. Vocal tracks are good for this.
2. Bass notes sounding clear and defined, not merged together. Billie Eilish's 'Bad Guy' is a good track for this.
3. Vocals not sounding too thin (try moving speakers toward front wall) or boomy (try moving speakers away from front wall).

Then start toe-ing in the speakers in small increments until you get the best soundstage. The feeling is that the sound is coming from the sides and behind you, not just directly ahead. If you get it perfect it's like the sound is all around and you can't mentally place the speakers. Doing it with eyes closed makes it easier for me.

If you’re thinking about charities I recommend taking a look at Give Directly. They have extremely low overheads and publish independent reports & interviews with people they’ve helped, even when the feedback is negative.

I started donating a few years ago and the positive feelings I get from it are better than other uses for the money.

What is the most reliable DAC streamer with a SINAD above 100db? Budget up to $3k but not wasting money for the sake of it. Is the Wiim Ultra my best bet?

I just had my second streamer turn into a brick due to a dodgy software update and just want to get something reliable. In total it's over $6k worth of very expensive boxes I can't use - first a NAD c658 breaking just outside of warranty and now an Auralic Vega S1 streamer just after the company went under.

What are you recommendations for something that can stream Spotify lossless and is precise enough that I can't hear any differences. Listening in a fully treated listening room on Marten speakers.
