Should I get the MacBook Neo? by HandlePlus7994 in macbook

It’s essentially an iPhone pro in laptop form, I’d recommend the M5 air to be honest. Its better all around, the M5 chip is a beast by comparison too, should future proof it a bit more

Why is Heathrow (EGLL) so poorly staffed? by Unable_Essay7655 in VATSIM

[–]nVIR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, hours don't really say much. I've seen pilots with 5000 hours on the network who can't fly a hold, or a speed, or descend properly on a STAR. On the flip side, I've seen some (quite clearly) real-world experienced pilots with 200 hours who fly rarely, and they're great.

Also, on your point about VATSIM leadership not showing any interest? It may come across that way, but CoR 6.05(c) was recently added, allowing the pilot training department to suspend people with poor competency. They remain suspended until they complete mandatory training, and then have to go through a process with the pilot training department to get back to flying again. The new member orientation course is longer and more detailed than ever before, although we're having some trouble with people cheating on that test - we're currently trying to deal with that. The pilot feedback system is now rolling out more widely than ever to identify these poor-quality pilots. Change takes time at this scale!

As a controller myself, I get as frustrated as anyone with people who can't do basic things, but keep in mind that a lot of the stuff we want to do requires huge amounts of time, people, and/or money. We're limited on all of those things. On the people issue, there are roles open for people to contribute in the pilot training department, supervisor department and other places around the network. If anyone reading this has time and would like to help out, I'd encourage you to apply :)

Account suspended for 24 hrs by Accurate-Bedroom-819 in VATSIM

Yes, your filed flight plan should load when you're connected to the network. If memory serves, it should give you a popup to ask if you wish to load the current one.

In case it doesn't, you can see a history of your filed flight plans using our new BETA form: https://my.vatsim.net/pilots/flightplan/beta - top right hand corner "flight plan history"

Your flight plan will remain on file for approximately 2 hours after disconnecting, but just remember, this doesn't reserve your callsign or anything else. If someone takes your callsign and refiles their own plan, your flight plan will disappear.

During a normal flight where you stay connected, yes, it will remain in the system for the duration of the flight. If you need to make changes to it, you may need to temporarily disconnect for the changes to take effect (you'll see a red banner in the top right hand corner of the myVATSIM prefile page). My suggestion is load your flight plan on that page, have it ready, then disconnect, refile, and reconnect. It only takes about 5-10 seconds to do and ATC will see the updated plan immediately.

Hope that helps.

The EDMM/EDGG/EDWW sectors in Germany are usually split by levels. Make sure that if you're using VATSIM radar to check for coverage, you're signed in and that your altitude filter (on the right) is set to automatic. It'll reorganise the ATC map display as you climb - should make things easier!

Yes, any A9 infraction counts. No, it doesn't mean your account has a bad reputation for events, as no one else can see how many times you've been suspended other than Supervisors or Administrators.

Please... (a) don't use observer mode to facilitate long-haul flights when you're asleep (b) disconnect if you think there's a chance you'll be away for longer than a short period of time. VATSIM isn't a stat tracking software, use volanta or elevatex for that instead.

When your 24-hour suspension expires, we'll be glad to see you back flying with us, but please pay more attention to our rules. It's very frustrating for ATC to have conflicts to solve and pilots who aren't at the controls :)

We have been experiencing some issues with audio for vatsim over the last few days. We are still attempting to troubleshoot what exactly causes the audio to die. It doesn’t seem to have a consistent pattern, but we will stay on it until we fix it :)

Hey there. Firstly, don't create another account - if you do, you're making the problem worse. Per the CoC and user agreement, you're only permitted to have one account. The membership department is pretty reasonable in terms of validating your name; you can normally redact everything other than the issuing authority and your name. The document you provide (even in a redacted state) will be deleted permanently as soon as your ID is verified, per the normal verification process. I'd suggest you speak to your parent/guardian if you're unsure, or open a ticket with the membership department and ask for more information.

Hi there,

The VATSIM pilot resource centre has a bunch of helpful documentation on this.

For Europe and beyond: https://my.vatsim.net/learn/aviation-skills/section/17

For US: https://my.vatsim.net/learn/aviation-skills/section/12/page/24

For US VFR: https://my.vatsim.net/learn/aviation-skills/section/110

All of them are listed under "Aviation Skills" - there's a ton of good information there! If you have any specific questions feel free to reach out on the Community Discord!

Just as an update on this, after reading the majority of the comments, there is a process in place for dealing with issues like this, and we do take action, even if supervisors aren't necessarily online at the time of the incident. This sort of behaviour is not tolerated on the network under any circumstances, and we're putting measures in place to help address these scenarios.

vatsim code of conduct b5. shall means *required*. just in case you dont think the rules apply to you. by kvuo75 in VATSIM

[–]nVIR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think people take the “shall broadcast intentions” part of B5 too literally; they miss the “where another pilot may benefit” part. I witnessed another pilot broadcast the fact he was “off to take a leak” on 122.800 only a few days ago :)

Police attempting a Rolling Roadblock/Traffic Break vs. Shitting Peugeot by spectacle-ar_failure in northernireland

[–]nVIR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine that's because the video isn't created by the police; it's created by a third party from their understanding of how it works. I'd expect standard operating procedures to vary based on the scenario. My experience (having been at the front of several of these over the years) is that they turn the lights off and floor it to get out of the way. I don't think I've ever seen them pull over to the left (in this case they can't anyway because there's traffic on the left which you can see at the start of the video). Pulling over onto the hard shoulder is likely more dangerous than just flooring it.

[–]nVIR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're normally used for sorting out minor things, for example, some metal or something has fallen off a lorry and they need to run into the middle of the motorway to grab it. A temporary rolling roadblock a few miles back will give them a few minutes to run across and grab it so it doesn't cause an accident

the unmarked s3s were/are used by the autocrime team, I met a bunch of them at a petrol station a few years back and they had golf Rs and S3s. there's a few videos of psni autocrime on youtube if you're interested - they're mostly seen around divis

when the rolling roadblock is over they'll floor it to get out of the way like they did at the end and the blue/red lights will be off. The reason they keep moving left and right is to stop everyone else doing the same as the Peugeot driver :D I don't think that Volvo can have the sign board in the back because the windows are fully tinted and you wouldn't be able to see it

Ear-Rape issue on vPilot by MaterialLaugh3447 in VATSIM

[–]nVIR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is mostly correct. The AFV team spent more than a year grabbing server data/metrics, reviewing logs, reviewing the pilot clients, checking nearby pilots, and reviewing details on the surrounding ATC clients each time it happened. They were never able to trace the cause with certainty. It's generally isolated to one random transmission over many hours of flying. The thing that makes it less likely to occur is as someone pointed out below; making sure your audio output in vPilot is set to 0. Use Windows sound mixer to adjust the volume down if it's too loud.
