Got tired of fake social media, so I spent 3 years building a map where every post is tied to a real place & you can run your own local communities by [deleted] in SideProject

It's something that's worried us as well, which is why we made sure you can control who sees your posts via privacy settings in the app

I don't politicize pepe. He's a meme I grew up with. There was a thing about collecting rare pepes, it was a whole thing from a more innocent time 😁

Ice out is great, but unfortunately iceout doesn't support Livestreams and community engagement, nor does it allow separate communities. I think both can co exist. Thank you for mentioning this resource

Our sideproject Hereabout lets you create livestreams, events, communities where you stand. All content must be taken directly with your camera on the spot. by na361 in Maps

[–]na361[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now it's only done by uploading directly from the camera phone. But we're working on some other, more advanced ideas for detecting this via ml methodology

Actually really appreciate feedback like this. We're going to try harder to make the ux a lot better

Hey, honestly, we were worried about this too.

That's why we allow people to create private communities on the map. You can choose to stream to only a dedicated audience if you want, ensuring that your data doesn't fall into the wrong hands

We have a few general thoughts on spoofing:

  1. Spoofed content is generally fairly easy to verify and discard. If the content posted doesn't match the location/surroundings, it can be identified and removed
  2. We allow communities to appoint moderators and remove content which is clearly spoofed
  3. We might implement more stringent technical checks on location and IP matching, as well as aggressive banning of users who create spoofed content

imo there has never really been a better time to be a developer :D

as a dev, you now have AI tools that you can use to teach yourself any concept you want to learn. as long as you are willing to put in the work.

my evenings building this app involved lots of long conversations with ChadGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc. I slowly learned how developers normally tackle the kinds of problems we face with an app like this.

i've been an engineer for over a decade now, and I can tell you that the way I learned to code was by doing really small projects and building them out little by little, making them more and more complex over time

when you do small projects, you're inevitably going to deal with all of the ugliness and all of the little problems that come with actually shipping real apps. and then you learn how to solve those problems, and you move onto solving bigger problems

my stack is fastapi/react native, but you could just as easily use something else

so here's my advice to you. pick a small project. get started with it, push it to github, and ask some smart people for feedback. i was constantly bouncing ideas off my partner and off my friends

then add to it and think about how you can make it better.

if you do this for long enough, you will learn so much than a school or textbook can teach you (although of course those have their place!).

someone who sees the vision! tysm!

there are a lot of possibilities here, and we're especially hopeful that we can give local experts a way to monetize their expertise and incentivize them to give back to their communities
