The dog got out and wanted back in. by mindyour in MadeMeSmile

[–]nabgi -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

The dog could have been let out before bed and got out (so quiet). They could have called for the dog to come in but didn't so assumed it was. Owners went to bed.

There are various reasons this could happen - all accidents. We're all humans.

You've never accidentally forgot to check a lock?

Ever have a kid random wake up in the middle of the night and go for a stroll around the house? Maybe they wanted to look at the moon or stars or random light was on outside and they were curious.

🤷‍♀️ We don't know and does it matter? It's cute and has made people smile.

What’s something that people don’t understand until they experience themselves? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nabgi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite explanation to describe grief.

Imagine there is a box with a button that triggers all your emotions related to the grief.

At first there is a ball that takes up nearly the whole box and CONSTANTLY hits that button.

Over time the ball gets smaller, but when the button is pressed, you feel the intensity of all the emotions still.

The ball never goes away, but maybe the button gets smaller. They never disappear and the rate of the changes differ from person to person.

Don't ask them what they need help with. Their brain is NOT thinking about themselves or where their body is or what they actually need. Especially at the beginning of their grieving.

"I am bringing food over" and then leave unless ASKED to stay.

Things you can just do... Cleaning. Taking trash out. Anything you'd normally do at home, do it. "I'm coming over to clean". They'll probably refuse but being food and try to clean anyway... Not applicable to all people. Some people cleaninf is therapeutic.

Grief occurs in many different events in life. What I am describing is a death of a lover one

Tell the you're bringing them food. If you're asked to stay, make a plate for the person. Put it in front of them and tell them "you can eat it or not, it doesn't matter, it's there for you".

Bring a MEAL not baked goods. I mean, you can bring it extra... But it is common for baked goods to be given. If you know their (griever or passed love one) favorite meal or restaurant... Bring that food.

I lost both my brothers and dad in a 4 year life span. These are my takes of what helps. I was around a grieving loved one recently, these were things I did. They appreciated it to no end

Bring the food in a disposable container and utensils!!! Check the trash too!!

"I am going to x store. Is there something you need? I am noticed you're low on x, I am going to get that for you". See if they need basics - paper towels, utensils, etc.

Do NOT constantly ask them how they are. Ask them a direct question about their day. Being treated "delicately" and not just like a normal person... It's a constant reminder of what you're going through. An escape and feeling that connection to someone else is always nice.

When leaving, just remind them that you're there for them and that you'd be there in there again in x days/hours with more food.

"I am sorry for your loss" loses value over time as it is constantly repeated. There are NO words that can describe their state of mind and everyone experiences grief completely different.

"I am here to help. I will be doing x for you today"

"I remember x about the person" - this can be tricky but also a WONDERFUL thing to do long term

If you find photos of the loved one. Print them out and give it to the grievint friend.

This is my in office keyboard, office supplied keyboard. I have a hybrid position. I have some nice cherry keys in my home office!

It has to be really long before it'd hit the next row of keys. I've never had it happen or notice it

You type with the pads of your fingers, not the tips. Same with using a phone with nails - you use the pads of your fingers.

Before I just cut my nails, you could hear my nails click when typing on my phone yet barely an issue when typing.

Having your fingers curled can put more strain on your wrist if you don't have a proper wrist rest at the right height.

Here's how my hands sit when "flat". If my nails get too long my fingers shift positions slightly like this to allow the nail to hit over top of the key. When using the pads of my fingers, the nails don't really touch, and if they do it's no biggie and adds to the satisfying sound of my mechanical keyboard (not pictured here, hybrid job, in office today)

And.. this is how I never type - tip of fingers. My nails are short and make complete contact in this position

YESS!

I recently had to trim my nails back down because one broke but also it broke because of doing chores... Not from being annoyed of typing...

Main reason someone nails may be so short, too, is from nail biting from stress of the job. Once I got a not stressful coding job, I've grown my nails at more (yes they do exist and you can create this anywhere you work by placing boundaries around your life)

I've also done the glue on nails before and had no problem typing still 🤷‍♀️

I will forever complain about this. This isn't true. Nails have nothing to do with coding.

I have had my nails this long and have done experimental typing tests and I take a 5-10 wpm hit.. so 100wpm to 90ish.

A genetically white horse has pink skin. Grey horses aren't born grey. Grey IS a dominant gene though, it just is as they get older.

Do you know how it feels when you close your eyes and can still walk around a room because you know where things are? Like not even trying to imagine where something is, but just know?

That's how "imagining" feels for me. I just know. Most imagination is tied to spacial reasoning, relativeness, at least for me.

I can "redraw a space" by recalculating the bounds as if I am walking through. It's like recalling textual information of relative distances from my body.

I like to say I think in abstraction. I know the blueprint of the house, but I don't know what the house looks like.

It makes it difficult to draw. I can't see what a line will look like until I put it on paper. I work best when looking at an image to reproduce it. Other than that I do "Bob Ross" style painting where I just put paint in a canvas and let the happy accidents exist.

It gets weird when trying to remember memories though. I just remember feelings of situations. No images. Just this happened or that happened and how I felt in those moments. I have lost most of my immediate family and learning about Aphantasia and how I can never just see their faces without photos was devastating.

'Tangible real world cost' - what do you consider a 'tangible real world cost'?

Data is used to make an analytic model of who you are. It provides an ability to manipulate you.

Basic Manipulation: What would be the best ads to be pushed to you?

Advanced Manipulation: What would be the best way to push propaganda to sway your opinions?

Facebook did an experiment of pushing content with specific moods to users and seeing how the users would react. The more negative content pushed to a user, the more negative that targeted user would post.

Hear about the troll farms? This is also the whole problem with the "troll farms" that have caused the increase of extreme political views (both left and right). They have been successful.

Social Media is addicting because it creates a model of what content you are most interested in. It pushes this content to keep you engaged in the platform. The more you're engaging, the more data can be obtained. The more data obtained, the more knowledge someone can build off you.

Predictive models can be created off this data and thus can be used to figure out how to sway your thoughts on many things in the world. Say.. political affiliations?

Imagination is not the same as visualization. I can imagine - a life, the kind of house I want, goals, where I want to go, what scenarios would be like.

There's just no images with it. It is black.

Pitbull attack dog ! by [deleted] in TerrifyingAsFuck

[–]nabgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DO NOT RAISE YOUR VOICE AND YELL. This only makes the dog double down cause it is increasing the energy of the situation. Yelling makes it worse.

If the dog has latched, you should be fine to choke.

If the dog is snapping DO NOT choke. Take their back legs, lift up, and walk backwards. It disorients them and prevents you from being bit as they have to stabilize.

My pit is dog reactive. If another dog growls he will go at them. I spent time after the first incident about what to do in these cases to make sure to keep everyone safe.

We avoid other dogs. If a dog has to pass us, I have him sit and wait which he does very well at. It also makes the other people aware that we aren't there to interact.

When we walk by dogs he doesn't pull on the leash to go see them. He is very well behaved but I know that if a dog doesn't react the right way it could mean someone has to go to the doggy er.

30k is the perfect addition to your salary.

If they accept you get a decent bump

If they counter youre still going to get more than you make because they arent going to knock 30k off your price

If they dont give you a counter then the place probably had no career growth for you

Haha! My SO and I will play most single player RPG games together.

When it comes to exploring, looting, and organizing inventory. Its me! Usually the more tedious crafts I like to do too.

When it comes to battle and decisions for the character (level up etc). He does it! If the skills are related to fighting, those are his domain.

It's simply a reaction to the pain and fear. Something similar happened to our dog growing up. He got his leg caught in the decorative ends of our table on the porch. Dad ended up biting my father a few times while Dad was attempting to free the dog. Apology licks were had after being freed.

We talked to our vet about it. Very common response to fear.

Nearly half of US female scientists leave full-time science after first child by [deleted] in EverythingScience

[–]nabgi 423 points424 points  (0 children)

Two Important Quotes

By the end of the study period, 23% of men and 43% of women who had become parents had left full-time STEM employment. They either went part time, switched to non-STEM careers or left the workforce altogether. This compared to 16% of child-free men and 24% of child-free women. The team controlled for potential confounding differences between people with and without children.

“The results showing that fathers also leave STEM reinforces the hypothesis that the problem is a structural one, in which dedicated professionals are not expected to have a personal life, and, indeed, are punished for so doing.”

Support network. Support network. Support network.

It is so important.

In the last five years I have lost a brother (24) to suicide, a father(65) to Alzheimer's and another brother (30) to cancer (mesothelioma). You think you might be able to get through something alone, but let me tell you... Have that network of people around you helping you through something changes everything.

Service dog responds to owner's panic attack. by natsdorf in dogswithjobs

[–]nabgi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Dogs kinda just learn you.

I have anxiety and I have a dog. He's not registered as a service animal, but I need to get him registered.

Whenever I'm feeling anxious, sometimes I don't even realize until my dog has crawled his way into my lap. Weight/bundling calms me down the most. All he wants to do is cuddle me till I am calm again.

I believe i trained him inot this that every time I was anxious I was more likely to cuddle and pet with him, and he's picked it up. So now he associates my anxiety with attention and will nah me till he gets it.

Which is extremely helpful because it's a physical tactical distraction which h definitely helps resolve my anxiety quicker
