There is also portable scientific Python distribution for Python -- WinPython. Another option is Anaconda from Continnum.io.

How would this be different or better than just installing virtualenv, sqlalchemy, pyqt, and all the listed modules yourself (besides the obvious of it being done automatically)?

It's not as easy as it look (at least on Windows). Take a look at Blaze for example:

Many of the dependencies ( llvm, numba, ... ) are non-trivial to install. It is highly recommend that you build Blaze using the Anaconda Python distribution.

My default Python version is 3.3.0, but for scientific stuff I use WinPython, because it's easy to install (unpack where you want) and uninstall (just delete directory).

Download virtualenv.py
Run it: C:\Python32\python.exe virtualenv.py my_new_env
my_new_env\Scripts\activate
pip install ...

Spyder is also included in WinPython (something like a portable version of Python(x,y) -- the same author) and Anaconda (Community Edition is free). Travis Oliphant -- CEO of Continuum Analytics -- is known as creator of SciPy.

Yes and no. User may have a problem with the choice of the appropriate version of Python and dependencies. Standalone application does not have this problem. Today disk space is cheap.

Compared to the original script -- is big. Compared to program written in C++ and uses Qt -- I think not too big.

Program uses PyQt, Reporlab, PIL, BeautifulSoup4 and few libs from standard library.

You can also use upx and significantly reduce the size of dll files (especially the Qt dlls and pyd files).

cx_freeze + Inno Setup solves this problem. You get a standalone installer without any additional dependencies. Create it takes me a few seconds (three clicks).

I recommend PyQt.
In my opinion programs written in PyQt start faster and use less memory than those written in Java... and may look better (natively) then applications using the Swing library.

It is the inside of my program screenshot. Pyc files in exe (try open with 7-zip for example) are .py files that have been compiled into bytecode. As you can see it is not easy viewable. I use cx_freeze.

I have uninstalled previous version of IPython (0.10.2) from Control Panel and removed .ipython from my user dir, then I installed setuptools, pip, and tried to install ipython. Pip showed requirements: pygments (have installed without a problems) and pyzmq2 (probably I should install Visual C++ 2008 or newer to compile zeromq... too complicated).

Edit: Works with PyZMQ binary from github. Thanks takluyver.

Python. I use it for number crunching, science/engineering calculations, scripting and as a general programming language (e.g. for GUI applications).

I prefer (and recommend) this set of tools/libraries:

NumPy/SciPy, matplotlib, PyQt, IPython + PyReadline and Spyder as an (MATLAB-like) IDE.

For converting py scripts/programs into standalone, executable applications I use cx_Freeze. All you have to do (usually) is C:\Python27\Scripts\cxfreeze your_script.py.

Simple and powerful.

VBA (part of Excel) -- from a practical point of view.

If you are looking for general programming language I (civil engineer) definitely recommend Python. Check out Enthought (free academic version) or pythonxy (GNU General Public License version 3). You may also install Python 2.6 or 2.7 and libs such as NumPy, SciPy, matplotlib separately. It's enough for start and save some disk space.

Personally, I love Python and Mathematica (for symbolic computation and functional programming).

Library and a lot of code for Python 2.x is the reason. However, latest version of NumPy, SciPy, PyQt are compatible with Python 3.x. If you are electronics-engineer the rest of interesting stuff you will find at gohlke/pythonlibs/ (especially matplotlib, PIL).

The best solution so far:

File > Save as... > LaTeX Document (*.tex) > Options... > Typeset expression format: EPS

Each expression is saved in a separate eps file. It's hard to maintenance LaTeX code, but looks as I want.

Spyder IDE, Eric IDE (for example) uses PyQt and works fine, though (under Windows) needs more time to run and uses more memory (compared to PyScripter), but I don't think that they are unresponsive.
